I can't really contribute to the slapping question, just not my .....idiom. The labelllas were very much like flats in tone.
No worries! I don't slap much, maybe 1% of the time if that much really. I just want to make sure that when I do, there is some 'snap' there (whatever the heck that means
)
I really should try out more strings on my Lakkie. I'm happy with the Rotosound 66s I have on, but I really haven't experimented a lot.
Same here.
I always used the classic nickle rotos on most basses.
Lately been liking the DR low riders.
But have not found anything other than those two I truly like.
Might give DR sunbeams a whirl on one bass at some point?

Thanks all! How can you resist a pickup named "Thunderbucker?". I'll get soundclips posted eventually. Essentially though, I have the bridge coil of each pickup in the 70s Jazz locations. So, it is sort of like a 70s Jazz with humbuckers and more low end. Surprisingly, this placement isn't too far off from tbird positions, especially given that Gibson has moved the pickups around quite a bit over the years.

Well guys after flying out to Chi-town yesterday, I was able to play a slew of basses. On the Lakland side I played a US 44-60, Skyline 44-60, and Skyline DJ. I'd like to hope it was a combination of set-up & strings, but I just didn't enjoy the way the US 44-60 was sounding. I believe I was playing through an M3 through some Aguilar classic 410 cab. I do prefer slightly higher action because I really like to dig in to the bass when I play. I'm not sure what to think as of now, but I almost think it HAS to be a combination of those factors not on my side, because when I tried the Skyline 44-60 & DJ through the Genz 9.2 @ some GB 112 cab I was absolutely in love. I talked to Brian @ Lakland shortly after, and he said as far as set-up and whatnot, they do send the basses out with fairly low action and some of the stores change it, some don't etc. However as far as the amp situation goes, I ended up really digging a Mike Lull V4 that I played through the M3->Aguilar 410 cab setup, so maybe the amp wasn't an initial factor in how I wasn't liking the end product of the 44-60, but merely the aforementioned setup&strings.
As far as now goes, US & Skyline Lakland are neck and neck with the Mike Lull V4 as far as my new bass considerations. I'm having a terrible think-storm!
Just thought I'd give an update, and I'm sure had the US 44-60 been setup differently, I'd have really really enjoyed it if I enjoyed the Skyline model as much as I did, and Brian said the exact same. IDK!

I know this is a Lakie thread, but Lulls are great and whatever you decide will serve you well. Don't overthink it
Lakland pride's itself on low action.....and the ability to have teh bass set up this was with minimal fret noise/buzz. if you like higher action, that can be fixed easily....
Lull's are nice basses...I just like the Lakland necks better...much better. did oyu notice the 44-60 vs. DJ body feel? that is one of the main differences...also the neck is slighlty different.

Yeah, I know about the action, I just have always gotten the most terrible reactions when I ask humbly for the action to be changed when I try an instrument out, and setup to my specifications for that matter. As far as necks go, both the Lull and the Lakland had great necks, weight on the Lull was 7.05lbs which is crazy, but it still resonated nicely and had some big sound to it. Lakland definitely had a beautiful feel to it, both US and Skyline models and obviously the neck on the US model outshine the Skyline, but not a night and day type of thing, the Skyline neck was definitely nice for the price. As far as overall feel of the DJ vs 44-60 I enjoyed both of the skyline models immensely, but yes I did notice the difference in neck contour towards the heel which is cool, and the slightly differently appropriated body styles.
Another thing on the US 44-60, I was noticing some 60-cycle when one pickup was favored over the other. Do they not have electrostatic shielding?
Don't remember the Skylines I was playing through having any hum.

I think you are finding out what many of us already know....Skylines are really nice for the money!
as for the hum....US models are shielded...possibly the bass had true single coils and not hum cancelling pickups....some people think there is a significant enough sound diffrence that they prefer the single coils...even with the hum potential.

Which tapes have you used before? I'm considering the fender 9120s specifically because they're a nylon wrapped roundwound.
Not on my Lakland, but on my Fender P I've got a set of the D'addario Tapes. They are nylon wrapped roundwound. I also have a set on my acoustic Ibanez.
On the Ibby, they come off sounding 'fairly' upright in tone, but on the P if I crank the tone knob they have a nice roundwound type bite and give it a nice bluesy tone, swirl the tone back just a bit and I get a more flat wound tone...
As the owner of US laklands and a Mike Lull, and have owned skylines at several times.
I would say money will play a part when it comes to the US Lakland and Lull vs the Skylines.
I would spend on the US Lakland or Lull, rather than get the Skyline if you can.
It will give you one of the very best necks out there, period.
The US Lakland basses and Lull basses are very much on par with each other in build quality.
Each is of course different.
But similar in build quality.
Just hang onto the money and see which one comes up minty and used and grab that for a nice price.
( I will not pitch the minty 54P Lull I have listed for sale right now)

you JUST did......
played my LOG bass at practice the other night....the worship leader was like "Wow! what a cool looking bass"...I know he had seen it before but it has been a while.
I do get many comments on my P basses for some reason....
