Can I join the group? I just acquired a 55-02. First owner bought it new, had it two weeks, then sold it to me. I have wanted a 55-02 for years, and now I have arrived. Really loving it.

Just got off the phone with Leo, a few updated things are in my future.

First: my DPLEII is coming back fixed up--it left the factory with high saddles years ago, they reshaped the pocket for me. I'll be playing it soon! Hopefully Friday...

Next: I'm going to be a shortie owner! Woo! I'm actually really excited about this... Leo found a SS neck that they used at NAMM years ago and offered it to me at a used price with warranty and stuff. Great! No wait!!! Plus it's gotta be one of the first, I'm assuming...that's cool.

It's going on my JO+darkstars formerly owned by Juan of the Mars Volta. I think it'll be quite the combo. The bass came to me with a bit of a beat up finish, from tour perhaps? And although it's cool because it's real road wear, I considered a refin. Lakland installs the SS necks (they refill and redrill the neck to fit the bass perfectly) so i figured, if it's already out there...why don't I have them send it off to Pat?

Attached is a photo of that bass and my decade...what color do you think would look good? Comes with a tort guard already...I'm gassing toward shell pink or something else sort of pastel colored (surf green, sonic blue etc...) but strongly leaning pink. Thoughts?

yup....and HE can kick some butt as well....well....according to hi, that is hte ONLY one that will EVER be exactly that color....he had Pat destroy the magic formula...

Goldie indeed I usually don't name my basses...ever...but this just happened. All gold everything! (well, you know, not really, but lots of gold)

She was wearing flats for the longest time and it sounded KILLER...and then I decided to throw a set of Rotosound swing 66 nickles on her and bam! THAT is a good sounding bass! Changing from flats to rounds has given me room to tweak the bass a little bit, bring the action down...which I haven't done yet but today is my day off so there's a good chance it'll happen soon.

As long as I find a box for the body, the bass gets sent off today! I hope a refin doesn't take TOO dang long, I likely won't see the shortie in all her glory until next year, but I feel it'll be worth the wait.

well....as a rule, Pat is out a AT LEAST 6-8 weeks...and NAMM is right around the corner.....so....plan on more time.

Finished with a few more things on my new 44-01. New pick guard, Lakland tone knob, jazz bass knobs on the rest, hipshot drop tuner along with the rest of the tuners now USA to match it. I kinda like it. Sorry for phone pic!

a new US is about 4-6 month...Skylines? it all depends on where the shipments are "in the cycle" for what you want...anywhere from "now" to 3-4 months. a stated, Lakland DOES have some fretless necks in stock...that is how I got mine for my JO5...

Another option would be to contact Lakland and see if they have any new or NOS necks that they could sell you. Of course thats if you can find a JO cheap enough to make that worth it.

True. When all my basses sell, I will be in the "new bass" neighborhood. I have a few jobs coming up, so that would not be a worry. I really like the DJ5 also, but a 55-60 custom B/B fretless in sunburst could be an eyecatcher. A fella can dream anyway...

B&B fretless??? hm...that would be swet BUT teh ONLY way to get that would be a US special order...per Carl Pedigo...cannot de-fret a Bound neck....trust me...I asked....I so badly wanted a fretless DJ a looong time ago.

Bass Emporium is closing down its brick and mortar store, may go online only. That's what I have heard.

...well....not so sure they are still really "in business" ....mixed stories...shame...nice shop.

The birthday I liked best was 40 last May, the bass in my avatar was my gift to myself, and the missus set me up a party and mini-gig at the pub where my band plays most regularly.

I get the feeling that 41 won't be the same.

yup...after that sort of gift (and matching cake)...it all goes down hill....well..after 40, that is the way it goes anyways.....

she's already off to Lakland! It hasn't reached Pat yet, but hopefully within a week.

I considered keeping black...but there will always be a million black basses. And the finish was beat up quite a bit from being on the road, nothing to the wood (that I found) so I thought a refin was in order.

And if a refin was in order...why not do it up right?! SHELL PINK IT IS!

NBD...2007 Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn, MIK, purchased from a fellow TBer. Just arrived tonight, pretty much plays itself, killer tone!! My Fenders are jealous.

Can't wait to pull the PG and see which pups are in there.

Just out of interest, it's a skyline with the serial number 08047028. Which I think means it may be the last-ever Korean Lakland. That would be pretty sweet to own!

Quick question for you knowledgeable LOG'ers; I've been lusting over Laklands for some time now, particularly the Skyline 44-60, going so far as to speak with my doctor about how "vital" some of my organs really are, and the going rate on today's market. My question is, does the Skyline 44-60 not come in natural? I noticed on the Lakland site that it offers 3T Translucent, Black, and Natural, but when I download the brochure, it says that the natural is only offered on the Skyline 55-60. It's only a minor hindrance, as I'm also a fan of Black/Tort/RW, but I'll be damned if I haven't already fallen in love with the idea of Natural/Tort/RW. Any insight?

there are a few out there....actually more natural 55-60s than 44-60s...(I have a natty 55-60)....

if you can find a 3TB with a nice grain...consider having it refinished natural....just a thought....or start playing 5ers....

I've seen a few natural Skyline 44-60s floating around out there, but they're relatively older and quite rare. My guess is Lakland did a small number of runs of them years ago. Good luck!

I'm interested in trying a Lakland - specifically a 5 string with a P/J configuration of some type. But I'm disappointed with their choice of dealers in the NYC area. Sam Ash and Guitar Center? Yech. Suggestions?

not much choice in NYC....sorry. There are a few LOG basses out there with a PJ configuration....If you can afford to order a US one, i would say order one...you will not be dissapointed (as an aside...decide if you want "modern" or "vintage" sound....will vary the pickups you want to order)....

if you are more "experimental" now, I would say find a used (or new) 55-64 and have Carl Pedigo (chicagobassdoctor.com) put in the J pickup....

Maybe buy one minty and used for a good price here on talkbass when the right one surfaces.
Worst comes to worst, you do not like it and re sell it.
I have had great luck buying used US Laklands here from great people @ reasonable prices.

yes, I've bought several basses here on TB and I have my eye open for a US-built Lak 5 with P/J config, don't see any at the moment. Thx though. Kind of confirms no good dealers around in NYC, no?

that is because there are NOT many out there.....few US 55-64s and even less with the PJ configuration....

All Lakie 5ers are 35" scale....

The quality of the B is unsurpassed...it is the BEST B I have played/heard...almost piano type quality to it.

as for "vintage sound" out of a 55-94....can happen but I think you would be happer with a Lakie "vintage P" pickup configuration if you are looking for an older vibe.

thanks man. Obviously this is a beaut - it's kind of a reverse P/J, but I'm sure it's great. Just don't want to pay full price for one of these w/o trying out the 35" inch scale (which I think this is) and getting a sense of whether the pup config lets you get the vintage tones. Also the quality of the B string is huge, that's what really set me on this mission.

So im trying to find a preamp for my 5560. Im trying to find something that, forgive me, but is "Fenderish". I love that thick deep fender tone, but I dont know where to start. I prefer a outboard box so I dont have to mod, but seeing as ive heard the Sadowsky, J-retro, and Tonehammer and they dont get me quite there, I think something else is necessary. Ive been looking at the Pensa preamp also. I played a Pensa bass in NYC recently and really dug the sound. Or should I be looking at pickups opposed to pres?

So I went in to my local music store to pick up some strings and walked out with a very nice used 55-60 Custom. I've been looking for a DJ, but the deal on this one was too good to pass up!

Looks like previous owner swapped out the pups for Basslines. Sounds and plays great.

Currently wearing flats that will be yanked off as soon as I get home. Looking forward to gigging it this weekend. Also probably look into a parchment pickguard or possibly a cream pearloid.

NBD! Freaking out a little...been missing my skyline DJ (my first lakland!) And took to daydreaming. I pictured a black, rosewood + b&b, matching headstock (of course) that i would modify with a black pg and white pup covers+knobs.

Well, an hour later my dreams presented themselves... a little bit of a longer story (with juicy details+pictures) to come. Busy day today!

I think the LH3 is what you want....like you said, you have played that before....it is more aggressive than the bart system.

I ahve asked Carl Pedigo about different pre-amp set ups....and he said that the LH3 does it all....why try somethign different?

Hey fellas- I have an early 55-02 from Feb of 2002...,one of the first. It's awesome, and I love it in the studio or for broadway shows because it's so round, polite, warm and clear.

But I want to give it some balls.... So I'm thinking about swapping out the electronics for something more aggressive. I have owned a few Laklandz with the Hanson package... Loved it! Are there any other suggestions?

I'm open to different (and not matching) pickups N preamps too.

Help a Brutha out.

Story time!

The past two days were jam packed with Christmas services. My church does Christmas a few days BEFORE Christmas, so people that attend our church but have family elsewhere can still go to our service. Great for me, as a player, as I am now home safe and sound in Wisconsin!

Yesterday, we had a three hour break between the morning and evening services. One of my drummer friends just moved back into town from Oklahoma, so we decided to go find some coffee and catch up. While we were out, my manager texted me, that there was an envelope at work from the owners. So we headed over that way, as it would be my last chance to grab it until after Christmas, and it was a nice little $50 bill! Thanks, boss(es).

Naturally, I did what any of us would do with $50 in hand. I went next door to Twin Town Guitars to poke around for a minute. And lo! a 2003 Skyline DJ, black, rosewood B&B! WHAT! Lightweight, plays and sounds great (aero, I cracked her open to be sure) and for a price tag of $850. Whoa!

Best yet: The bass came with a white lakland HSC, and was on consignment: since I'm a nice barista from across the street, they gave me %5 off the top. What a good day! I happened to have a fresh set of strings back at the church in my gig bag so we headed back and I immediately threw them on.

What a good day!

So I think the bass would look awesome with a flat black (no bwb, just black) pg and white pup covers+knobs. Then I realized that tort would also look good. Opinions?
