But do miss the shoot and drop off at the lab thing.
This endless computer editing crap will kill a person.

I used to love working in the darkroom, now I can do even more fun stuff on the computer. But, you are right, it can become an endless endeavor!

I also prefer Nikon, FWIW. I have a couple of digital SLRs that are my "serious" cameras, but I got a Nikon P500 for a lightweight,fairly compact camera, and the lens on this thing is awesome for such a small thing. Plus, it has a viewfinder, not just a LCD screen on the back. I hate those, actually.

Anyway, on topic, Nikons are great for photographing Laklands!

+1, I'll be the first to admit I don't really know what I'm doing when I take pics of my basses, but the Nikon I use at least makes them not suck as much.

Nikons are good for photographing ANYTHING!

One of the guys on a photography forum has a sig - "I used to have a darkroom, now I have a computer - the computer smells better!" I really agree with that sig.

I've been having a lot of fun getting back into photography - I used to do a lot but life got in the way. I recently upgraded to a Nikon D800 with the 24-70 and 70-200 lenses. And it was REALLY an upgrade.

Here is my 09 US Duck Dunn in metallic green. Bought from a fellow TBer mid last year.

The neck feels amazing and stable. It's a wonderful bass to play. Very even note definition and a solid fundamental.

I wasn't so fond of the original pearl pickguard so I replaced it with tort. To me the pearl guard accentuated the inlays and binding, which is fine, but it also made the green unappealing. IMO the tort guard has richened up the green and brought out the colour and detail in the neck wood. Really pleased that a simple fix has transformed the look of this bass.

Well...finally, it's time. I've owned this bass for months and it has made me into a pure, straight-up Lakhead! Apparently it comes with a history: sold to me by nautipaul, who bought it from kevdel, who purchased it from original owner Hollow Man who commissioned our good man Carl Pedigo to build this 34" scale 55-94 (54-94?) in beautiful "Carribean Burst" with passive electronics. It came with standard Lakland Pickups, but I went to the factory on Berteau and Carl installed some wonderful single coil version of those pickups, and....I had him change the nut so now it sports an E-high C tuning. I've had many wonderful instruments, (and owned a 44-02, skyline JO, and a 44-94) but this is tops. There is no going to anyone else for me. This is scary to say, but I'm almost ready to sell the wonderful collection I have and just have 4 or 5 Lakies! Cheers guys! Oh, and can I get a number? Luke.

Wow, thanks for the video! I've never heard the Meters before, but that was definitely awesome! I'll have to hunt down some more of their music to listen to.

Thanks to everyone else for weighing in. Part of my hesitation is that it's an Asian made instrument for close to the price of a U.S. Fender, but that Lakland...I've never played anything like it before. There was almost nothing I could have improved on it.

I was going to respond, BUT it looks like what needed to be said was said.

Lakie necks are the best (IMNSHO)

Don't let the fact that they are made in Asia dissuade you. The consistency of the Skyline Laklands trumps Fenders US line..as does the feel, playability, sound and customer service. I have played literally hundreds of US Fenders back when I sold basses for a living and IMHO Lakland has figured out the secret to making gold.

I was able to handle a few of the most recent batch of Skylines this past weekend and they seemed to be really light overall....

I would put most Skylines against all USA Fenders any day of the week....Indo or wherever!

There were a few issues but those have been resolved!

not a great pic, but I play my Lak P 5 in my main band and my Fender P 4 in the "other" band. It's just what fits each band. Both great basses but the Lak is #1 on my list. Not sure I'll ever need another bass. (Of course I'll get one, though. )

They do! Now I will say, it's not a big place (one big room and a couple smaller ones), so the "tour" is pretty short. But it's a very cool and fun place to hang for a while. They almost always have instruments to play. And if you like those skinny-stringed instruments, they make some neat guitars under the Hanson name and have those on hand as well.

Also, nearby are Bass Club Chicago and Chicago Music Exchange, which are each great stores--BCC has the boutique thing covered, while CME has an incredible vintage collection.

If you come to town, let me and Doug/basspraiser know, we're the welcoming committee. I am lucky enough to live close to all these places, and Doug uses it as an excuse to come into town.

yup...any excuse to get there is a good one! (and we can fight over where to take him for pizza!)

So this is a long shot, but I've found myself missing my Laklands. There is no one in here with a pre 2000 55-94 Deluxe that's interested in a Trade is there? Also Doude did you ever sell Jade?

I heard somewhere that those chi's aren't so good with low action basses, my Laklands are setted up pretty low without fret buzzing, are those rumors just hear-say, or is there some truth to that? I want to cover all my bases before I send an order.

never heard that before....I ahve CHIs in 2 basses with very low set ups....no issues!

Very interesting! The 44-60 Chi-Sonic that I just acquired has the bridge saddles set crazy high. She sounds awesome with TI flats but has a little more fight in her than necessary. I was thinking to email Lakland to get advice on proper setup including pickup clearances.

Lower the strings and the pups you say?? Any helpful PDF files?

Looks great to me, gotfunk21. A trans finish is always going to be a little unpredictable because the underlying wood affects the final appearance. I'd say you got a real winner! Have fun with it!!!

Woody..I agree 100% and that is why I am not usually a trans kinda guy...but this??? rolled the dice and won BIG time!

So, I contacted Brian from Lakland, told me about buying a set of Chi's, and I didn't want to be a drag to him, so I'm asking you guys who have or had Lakland Jazz basses with those Chi's, what is the difference in the sound?
I only heared Ed Friedland playing on some, never talked about them or showing anything about them, and heard Dan Maines from Clutch but he uses a distorted Ampeg, and I play mostly funk and some blues/rock, nothing hard as Clutch, so I'm not fully known with it's sound... Please help

More output, more open, deeper tone, more growl, little less top.

I've had them in 2 jazz-style basses. a 44-01 and a DJ. I really liked the chis in a jazz bass, because the stock passive pickups (bartolinis in 44-01 and LH in DJ) kinda leave me cold. I guess I just like a more aggressive tone. I would characterize it as edgier, more sparkle on the high end, more gnarly on the mid-range, and ok but not hit-you-in-the-gut lows, which I think you only get with a pre-amp boosting the lows. So for passive pickups, they get you closer to a modern tone without a pre. I'll let others describe them for you, all I could say is "I liked them very much, but in the end, I just preferred active jazzes" (such ones I now own by other manufacturers) and they were passed onto other owners.

edit: that's funny, I think they give a little more on the top than the vintage LHs. Maybe my ears are different than Markus'.

Marskus and Gary are both right....CHIs are more aggressive J pickups....I agree with Gary...more high end....but nice rounded high end NOT piercing or obnoxious by ANY means!

!! EXCITEMENT !!

I had dreamed up a LOG bass once upon a time (still not a member...actually, side note, I TRIED to join but both safari and firefox kept giving me a similar error. Probably a website problem...)

And the bass was:

Skyline
Semi hollow
Short scale

simple enough. And, after a phone call with Leo a few minutes ago, referencing a picture from NAMM (found on the LOG website), this bass is coming to existance!

It's a SS skyline, will be produced in tobacco sunburst with an aged pearloid PG. Bound and dots neck, semi hollow, and a new set of pups. They're from Korea somewhere, made to Lakland specs. So no, they're not chi sonics, not hanson, but Lakland got what they wanted for this bass. The bass will come with flats on it. He says the street price should be under 1k...sign me up!

New to the club. My first Lakland and this US Glaub is a beauty. Sorry, the pictures do not do this bass any justice whatsoever - a photographer I certainly am not. With that said this has the Fralin p/u and sounds/plays like an absolute dream!

I was going to start a new thread to ask, but you folks have been very helpful, so I'll try here.

I'd like to get a Lakland Skyline 44-64. The first (and only) one I've tried so far captured my heart. It is a 2005 model, sunburst with tort, in really great condition for $825 with a molded case. This will be my first expensive bass, though, so there's definitely some appeal to buying new. I don't know how the older ones stack up to the newer ones. Anyway...new or used? Thanks!

This funk/motown band that im subbing for tried to make me play their fender p bass with flats to get a zero treble vintage tone.

It seemed odd to me for them to tell me to play their bass which ive never seen or played before, for the gig.

I wasnt into gigging with a bass im unfamiliar with and im not into flats so i told them i'll stick with my bass (Lakland 55-69) but i'll play with a more p bass vintagey sound.

wow.....how did it go??? you should be able to get a decent thump out of it with some tweakage...

Eublet, I'm not sure it's as easy as reversing the function of the push/pull. I'd imagine when the pot is pulled out, it's opens the power circuit. It may be possible to install a micro switch/toggle in series with that circuit to allow you to do the same thing. As another option, maybe using a TRS ( Stereo type 1/4" ) plug at the Instrument end of the cable without the "Ring" being tied to the "Tip" or " Shield" terminals. Worth a quick test at least to ensure you get a signal from the instrument. If that works, you won't need to modify the bass, just change the cable the other 5% of time. Certainly worth the test however.

I had been eye balling a 44-94 that looked to be that same color...drop dead BEM board...brand new ....some dealer had it listed on ebay for a sweet price.
I chickened out however, as I had recently picked up the buckeye burl 44-94.

I bet it did! I LOVE my 55-76 in a band setting...just something about it sits in very well!!!

Beautiful bass! That Amber finish on a deluxe top never ceases to impress. I honestly think that the body shape of the 4/55 series basses has to be the best ever for me. It's big enough to feel like a man's bass, but refined enough to be comfy, and with absolute complete access to the entire fretboard, what's not to love. I will always respect and love Leo Fender's designs, but the one thing he got completely wrong to me is the upper access on the fretboard. I want Lakland to build me a P/J in a 4-94 body. I'm thinking strongly of putting in the request to see if they'll do it.

Thanks, I'm toying with the idea of a Stingray style pickguard for it. I'd never drill holes in the bass, so it'd be taped (double-sided) on. Maybe a white one w/ an orange power T for when we are playing for sports fans. Go Vols!!

My favorite is the 1.65" like the 44-94, EBMM, '51 P etc have. But, I don't have issues w/ a 1.5" either. Absolutely can't play a 1.75" due to the wider string spacing in the money area of the fretboard. It's weird how much 0.1" throws me off!

Just picked up my first Lakland! Skyline DJ4. I was originally gearing up to buy the limited Trans Burgundy available from Bass Club in Chicago but as soon as I saw the Lake Placid Blue in person I couldn't say no!

I ordered one of the Trans Burgundy Skyline DJ4s. I am (im)patiently waiting while she's back at the factory for some Chi-Sonics before she ships.

I just sold my 44-01 so I am temporarily ineligble for the club (ha ha).

I'll post pics of my new baby when she arrives...

Next up... My Fretless... '06 body w/ Lakland LH3 and '04 Neck

'11 AJ body with '06 Maple Neck... strung with Stainless DR Lo Riders... I may be swapping the electronics for Aguilar Pups and Pre... just because I can...

And last but not least... my Bob Glaub... She's stock from (if I'm deciphering the SN correctly) '02. She may be getting a tort guard in the near future. I like tort.
