Definitely completely different animals. I have a Modern 24 and the necks are no where near similar. Much beefier on the Sads, but not as much of a baseball bat as Fenders. Both are great instruments - just different IMHO.

One thing Carl Pedigo mentioned to me about Lakland vs Sadowsky necks - I believe he described it as Sadowsky still uses a "shoulder" between the sides of the neck and the fingerboard/fretboard, and that that's a "vintage" approach, perhaps not sufficiently taking latter-day luthiery lessons learned into consideration when making modern high-end vintage STYLE basses.

Personally, I think you get a lot more bang for the buck for a US Lakland than a Sadowsky. Of course, that's entirely subjective, and your mileage will vary.

I'm using Roto 66s on my 55-02. They found fine, but they're not long enough to string through the body. It's not keeping me up nights, though.

The J neck on the DPLE is feeling ok so far, although I've only had about 2 hours with it. It seems much closer spec-wise to my Musicman Sterlings than my Fender Geddy Lee. The GL is wonderfully fast, yes, but sort of too thin and flat. (I barely play the Geddy Lee, in part because it happens to live in my office at work. Coincidentally, it's not often accounted for in my wife's mental inventory of basses. :ninja: )


Curious to dig a little deeper on the Lakland J vs DJ neck profiles. Is the DJ thinner/flatter or thicker/fatter? Anybody have experience with both the DJ4 and JO4/44-60 care to comment?

Picked this baby up from the FedEx office this morning. Inspected (aka worshipped) her and plugged her in, and wow! This is the best bass that I've owned. And it most definitely has a better feel to it than the MTD I was looking at before i paid her off. I'm not even considering doing my usual stock string swap to DR as the stock strings are already good. The pickups and preamp all work for me (no change needed), the 35-inch scale isn't a problem, and chording is a breeze. This bass is great! Can't wait for rehearsal tomorrow night. Number please?

glad you like the DPLE!

The GL and MM necks are in a classs by themselves....toothpick thin. I cannot play them at all.

out of site...out of mind....;):D gottcha... maybe you can sneak ina few more that way! if i had a bass in the office, not much work would get done...although when i work at home I stare at my wall of lakies but the temptation is ever present!!!!

teh DJ neck is rounder and thicker (front to back)...even in the fiver version. I have had DJ4 and DJ5, JO5, Glaub 4 and 5
