For me it's DR Stainless Lo-Riders on my 55-02 w/Barts, DR Nickel Lo-Riders on my 55-AJ, and DR Sunbeams on my 55-02 Fretless w/ LH3.
I've tried Sadowsky, but hate the tapered B. I've tried D'Addario, but they just don't sound "right" after about a week... Not dead, but just not right to me... I've tried Dunlops, but they're too short to string through body. The stock Lakland rounds just don't do it for me either... can't place it... they just aren't DR's.
BUT... Lakland Flats... 100% greatness. The lower tension matched with the right amount of thud/brightness is PERFECT on everything I've put them on. Too bad my supply has dried up :-/
Elixir nickel on my 55-60. Elixir Stainless on my 55-02. Both are different flavors of awesome.
True...made by GHS....but you cannot buy the exact same string in a GHS package
The J neck on the DPLE is feeling ok so far, although I've only had about 2 hours with it. It seems much closer spec-wise to my Musicman Sterlings than my Fender Geddy Lee. The GL is wonderfully fast, yes, but sort of too thin and flat. (I barely play the Geddy Lee, in part because it happens to live in my office at work. Coincidentally, it's not often accounted for in my wife's mental inventory of basses.)
Curious to dig a little deeper on the Lakland J vs DJ neck profiles. Is the DJ thinner/flatter or thicker/fatter? Anybody have experience with both the DJ4 and JO4/44-60 care to comment?
I always thought the DJ neck was thinner...but I just did a visual comparison on my US examples, and it seems the JO is indeed thinner. I should post a few pictures for reference later

The Lakland site shows US DJ has neck radius of 7.5", while the Skyline DJ and all other US and Skyline "J" necks say 10" neck radius. There's also a chance the anomalous 7.5" US DJ spec could be an error on the website.
It's tough, right now I use d'addarios chromes. Because of TBers I'm going to bite the bullet and try TI Flats. I wanna see what all the buzz is about. Of course, it all depends on what type of sound you like. I play in a funk/soul band and a jam band and the flats do the trick for me. Talk to Jason at BSOnline he can lead you in the right direction and there CS is awesome. Hope this helps.
The Lakland Joe Osbourne flatwounds (made by GHS) are fantastic. Carl Pedigo "insisted" I try them on my US hollowbody. I'll never look back.

I have had the same set of TI flats on my Fender since 2010. Out of curiosity I bought a new set to see if I could tell whether the old set had lost anything... Nope, still awesome! One thing I will say about them is they'll buzz on you if you really like to dig in a lot...due to the low tension, as mentioned earlier. Still though, I love 'em
Really? Huh I thought they felt the same but that was thinking they are the same. What's the notable difference?
And are lakland flats not available now??
I have been using some mystery heavy gauge flats on my US HB and it's a killer. Dark blue thread...I suspect LaBella but I'll never really know. They came on a used bass I purchased. But really, nothing has sounded as good on this bass (it has barts...) than these flats.
That being said, I have an extra set of lakland flats and daddario halfs for hollowbody. If you're at all interested in some cheap strings.
THAT being said, the halfs work great for darkstars! I can't remember if I tried it on my DPLEII or not...I used my DPLEII on a few tracks recently, with rotosound nickels and it sounded great.

This is true IME. The web says shows that the necks differ at final fret width. With the DJ at 2.5 and the Joe at 2.48.
I think I have one of the thinnest Joe necks I ver felt on the PJ that I have. The DJ in not in my possession right now but. It's neck is definitely bigger.Even noticeable in the Pic I posted at the top of the thread. And while I don't have it to confirm Im pretty sure it's 7.5 radius. This is actually the one thing I don't like about the Joe's neck. I wish it had a smaller radius.
I haven't had a chance to relay my experience so far with the DPLE and its darkstar. I have about 4 hours on it so far. It's WAY brighter, less bottom, more growl than I expected. I think it the strings might have a lot to do with it. Not sure what it came with. (Brandon?)
Carl put Lakland steel rounds on my 4-94. I guess they're OK. They're still new-ish. I seem to prefer old/dead rounds. I might leave them on. I generally do no swap strings frequently.

Wow, look at all those neck shots. (That's a lot of Laklands!)
They certainly do look different from one to the next, even within the same models and supposedly same specs. I guess I'm more confused than anything. No surprise there. Reinforces the idea that you never know how a given specimen will sound and feel until you touch it and hear it for yourself.
