Let me add to the ChiSonic swap from last week. The strings make all of the difference, yes, bass player 101, but when I installed the Chi's I put on a brand new set of DR Sunbeams, which I previously loved. The highs were simply not there. The strings had the fresh, zingy sound when not plugged in, so I know they were not were not dead.
I wound up swapping the pups for a set that had a more highs and was happy. But, I kept going back to my DJ5 and TL6 and didn't connect the dots, until last week. The DJ5 and TL6 have Dunlop Super Bright Nickels on them.
Once I realized this, I dropped the Chi's back in, slapped on a set of Super Brights and BAM, the highs were back as was the tone that I loved in my old Chi equipped 4460.
I have Sunbeams on my 5502 which may explain why it sounds slightly anemic. I'm totally sold on the Super Brights.
Give them a try, low tension, low cost, punchy tone and good life span.

Well, I've had the 55-01 for a few weeks and a couple gigs under the belt and it's quite a killer bass. It's a crusher with the Big Singles and passive electronics. It still can't believe that it's a 35" scale bass. In playing position I feel no difference in scale length between my Sadowsky Metro and the 55-01. It's a trip! I play 1/2 step down and one thing I've noticed is that I prefer stringing thru-bridge as opposed to thru-body. I don't know if there's a significant sonic difference to my ear but there is a difference in feel. It's just an all around killer bass that makes me want another Lakland (of course, darn G.A.S.).

The 35" scale is a bit deceiving on a Lakie... More of 34-1/2".... They move the bridge down a bit to compensate so the neck is really not much longer

Ahhhhhh.... that makes so much more sense to me now. Brilliant. The neck contour makes all positions effortless too.

that red one (one of the Bass Club editions, no doubt) is tempting; but I need another bass like a hole in the head.
Hmmm, I thought all the BCC DJs had plain head stocks. The ones I found online just now did.
Maybe GC got the description wrong and it's actually one of the early CAR models (hard to tell from the lousy pic), or someone got the headstock painted. Anyone interested should ask about the serial number.
The original Bass Club Chicago ones had matching headstocks but they ended up with additional bodies so the last ones were paired with a regular headstocks and were a bit cheaper.

Halfway my 6 month waiting time ... why do the last few months always seem to be longer than the first ones...
55-64, P/J, LH-3 preamp, natural finish over an ash body, rosewood fretboard, black pickguard.
It'll be my third Lakland - I unfortunately had to sell my 2000 55-94 (trans blue, Bartolini pickups) to fund my current main bass: a 2011 55-60, natural ash, maple neck, no pickguard, J-Retro.
