Is it normal for the 55-02 to have a huge volume drop with the pickup blend knob set directly in the middle? I just had my shop convert the bass back to stock (except for a 500k volume pot) after having it wired passive with different pickups for a few years. Trying to figure out if the shop may have wired it up incorrectly of if this is normal behavior for the Lakland pickups/LH3 preamp setup.

As someone who once wired a Washburn Taurus bass with its DiMarzio Model J's out of phase, I can attest that if the volume drops and esp if the tone becomes "thin and crappy" at center blend, those pickups are fighting each other. The latter specifically if you've got two pickups of the same type, which the 55-02 doesn't of course, but the volume drop is certainly a big tell.

I upgraded my US 55-AJ with Nordstrand NJ5F custom single coil pickups and the 2B+ preamp. Volume (pull passive), Blend, Treble, Bass. What a huge difference. This bass now cuts and has a better balanced tone!!

You could make footage by moving a camera slowly over that quilted maple, and lease/license it, and people would buy it.

Love my 55-02, she’s now my #1 to go bass, with my 44-64 GZ on second. Still my Fender P with Nordstrand pickups and TI flats being #1 on the studio.

Question... how do the Cobalts compare feel wise with their regular slinky flats.. when I first tried flats, I tried the slinks, because I'd played the rounds for years... I absolutely hated them.. the sound, and they felt... sticky, for lack of a better word trying to do slides was impossible

You have to wipe them down with string wipes or whatever you like. They, like many flats, have residue on them from the production process. Also I have a video here with a sound sample of the EB 40-95 flats on my jazz bass. I’ll post it in here for you

Thanks! Bit of a bummer for sure as I only gigged it once, but the replacement will be the same, so looking forward to it. The neck wasn't impacted, so Leo was able to salvage that and make a new body for me. Great customer service as always (now if they return from vacation and assemble and ship! )

Yes. I’ve used GHS precision flats on my Laklands for almost a decade. I had them on a 494 for quite some time. I’ve most recently put them on a newly acquired 5594.

Me too. I used to run GHS Precision flats on an older MIK 55-02 with Barts and loved it. I've been contemplating putting a set on my newer 55-02 the LH3 electronics but haven't had time to do it. A project for post summer gigging season.

I ran flats on my US 44-PJ for a bit, sounded awesome and recorded beautifully, but those particular flats had a little too much tension for my liking (La Bella Gold Flats). It ended up with La Bella RX Nickels, which it loves.
I have La Bella White Nylons on my 55-01 which are lovely! Not quite the same of course, but I suppose I’m just illustrating that Laklands can work with any strings really.
