An alternate hypothesis is that "plays like butter" is a corruption of "plays like the Buddha". There is some evidence that Buddha was a bassist - he was, after all, fat, bald, and known to not move much.(this is where the term "plays like butter" comes from)

True, but if you want a truly perfect truss rod adjustment, you should use a torque wrench.Truss rods need at least 3 full turns in order to have any effect on neck relief. Put some elbow grease into it if it starts binding up. It will probably be necessary to obtain a long-handled wrench so you can really get some torque on it.
