My newly acquired Fender P-bass Lyte weighs around 8lb I believe, and with active pups is pretty punchy.
My Carl Thompson "No Frills" bolt-on bass is the lightest bass I've ever held. Costs a bit more than most no frills basses, but worth every cent and I doubt you'd find anything lighter or more comfortable.
The Lakland 4402 I just sold weighed in at approx. 7.5lb. However, I bought it in person and can say it was lighter than the other 4402 I played at the store (which was still 8ish lbs. +/-). So not sure how consistent these are if you were to buy one sight unseen.
Got my Certainbass back in December and love it. If you're looking for a Fender feel and tone, with a lighter bass it's a great buy. It's definitely under 8 lbs.

I've no idea what your price range is, but for a cheaper bass, my Ibanez SR500 feels like it has no mass to it at all and is definitely the lightest bass I've played. Unfortunately, I've never had a desire to weigh the thing so I have no actual weight measurements to post, but it's certainly extremely light. It does sound pretty good too, although you have to prefer thin necks with this one.
Without any actual numbers to compare, it does feel about half the weight of a typical jazz bass.

I have a four string Ibanez Soundgear (probably from the 80's) that weighs about five or six pounds.

sorry to hear about your back problems. I feel for you, got some myself, probably surgery before too long. I've been looking for light basses too. My wife just got me a peavey millenium bxp tonight, its quite light but I doubt its as light as what you are looking for. Have you considered a semi hollow body?
The lightest bass I own is the recently purchased Squier Vintage P bass. I have not put it on a scale but I bet it comes it under 7 lbs. It is LIGHT.

Don't think my St. Blues bass is good for you, buddy. I've got degenerative disc disease issues for 20 years now and am looking forward to my second MAJOR surgery in fall.
New alder MIA Fenders are fairly light; they're OK for me, and I've really gotta watch it. Pick up a bunch and find the lightest. As cost is an issue, I'd consider the new Danelectros, which are flyweight and under $400. Unique sound, fun to play.

My Jerry Jones Longhorn is one of the best sounding basses I've ever used--sees tones of recording time. My Les Paul (guitar) weighs a lot more than this bass!.
