Low Down Sound Club, Part Four

I came up with a great setting of for my 3015 loaded ported 2x15. I first Highpassed with my Fdeck version 2 at around 80hz, then on my SM9.2 I boosted 120hz 6 clicks, cut somewhere between 500-800hz 6-9 clicks, treble at 3:00 andmaxed the global highs. It makes the cab very similar to teh nv610 but with more smooth top end.

I got email from Ralf Patterson, saying my re-worked crossover for my 12/6/1 should be here late next week.

--I dumped the 18Sound in favor of a Faital. This means the mid driver needs much less (or, non) pad back, and, I wanted the horn crossed lower....

Yesterday I A/B'd my LDS 15/6/1 (fEarful footprint, Ralf crossover) with a to-spec fEarful. Same amp, same setting, cabs sitting right next to each other.
The shocking (or not-shocking news):
They both sounded great, and pretty much the same.
I hesitate to say "they sounded exactly the same" because I was the one moving the Speak-on cable. It would have been a more scientific test if I was blindfolded and listening, and someone else did the cab swap...

Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, nobody puts out a product like Don. How good it is depends on how well you have picked your design. Nobody does tolex better and his constuction is as good or better than anyone else.

I bought this a while back from TB'er TopTen... sweet light cabinet, has usurped my beloved aggie gs112's (4) as my go to rig. I've gigged it with the Aggie Db750, Tfunk 550A, Shuttle 9 and most recently with my Orange TB500 as suggested at the GB forum.
The Aggie is tops with the cab - slam, heft, visceral power. That said the Terror Bass 500 - 15/6 really is a great match. The TB500 takes a lot of the polite out of the cab... fun times -
BUT, today I ordered a LDS Dually 15 w/Faital drivers! Can't wait!!!
My wife is the best!

While Don did a great job on the build, and did them just the way I wanted;
I
t turned out I'm no fan of the 18Sound mid...which, somehow, ended up sounding both harsh, and scooped at the same time...

So, after talking to Don and KJung, I ordered a Faital from Don which was much smoother and more pleasing, but, padded back too far via the crossover.

So, I got in touch with Ralf Patterson, Don's crossover guy, and had him rebuild the boards, changing the crossover points, and, the amount of available signal for both the mid, and the horn-which I felt wasn't doing as much as I wanted either, in fF spec.
Ralf agreed on both points, btw...

I got the new boards Friday, installed them today, and they did just what I asked for, which was
make it as close to the Baer ML112 as possible, plus a kickin' horn."

Mission accomplished; it sounds much, much better, to me.
Both horn and mid driver have L-pads, fwiw.

I always get a little frustrated by some the fearful crowd always knocking Don's cabs as somehow inferior, or somehow being "copies". Don does top notch work and was designing these types of cabs long before most of the others ever came about. Add to that Ralf's excellent crossover work and these cabs are in league with any other cabs out there, and that's that!

+1 to that! The 2126 cab I have that Don built for me is wonderful and had nothing to do with any other design, to the best of my knowledge. I asked Don to design and build me a great 2-12+mid cabinet and he came through with a great product for me; nowhere in our discussions did the words Greenboy or fEARful™ come up at all.

Yes to all of that. Don was building 3-way cabs and super 2x15's long before they became the latest craze. His build quality is as good or better than any of the wooden boutique cabs and he does it for half the price or less. To my knowledge there is nobody else out there doing this.

+1. And let's also remember that Don did'nt start calling these 15/6 cabs " nEARfuls ". That term originated here on TB, not with Low Down Sound.

Works with folks to build great cabs that they ask him to build and offers his own input. I actually admired him for telling me, " If you want an exact fEARful the plans are out there, and you can build it yourself, I have been building these 2 and 3 way cabs for years". The only reservation I would have is if I i.e. wanted (for ridiculous means of discussion) a 10x10 eminence 3010lf cab ported with a shelf port and dimensions of 52"x29" by 18" deep, that in all probability would not be what I get.
Might be he worked it out and would give me something that worked after doing the homework. A fair number of folks have said, he did not deliver what I specified. I have not seen much in the way of "and it sounds like c----"
