Low Down Sound Club, Part Four

Can anyone share with me how much their recently-ordered LDS cabs cost? I'm looking to get sort of a ballpark for various cabs before I contact Don to see about getting something built.

I really want something portable and loud, so I can replace my full-stack and combo, and be able to bring it to rehearsals and gigs without destroying my back.

Thinking of Don's take on the 12 or 15 + 6 craze, no tweeter. I owned until a few months ago a very old 3-way cab by Don, but never used it because tonally it was no longer doing it for me. This was built around the same time Greenboy was polishing the fEarful design, and Don's cab had no components in common with that.

I'd prefer good clarity but not hi-fi sounding. Honestly, the Black Widows in my Peavey cab are great: Big bottom end with just enough highs. But that thing is a beast to move.

For portability sake, I'm thinking of tilt back casters and telescoping handle. I had a removable unit on my old cab, and I transplanted it onto my TC combo, but I'd rather it all be built in on the next cab.

@pbass6811, you should put the LDS badges on swivels, kind of like the old PS2 used to have with the PS symbol on the CD tray, so they rotate to the proper position no matter how it's standing.

Just get in touch with Don directly he'll get you a quote.

Dons wife is not in good health.

I dont wanna put Dons business out there... but he may not be able to build many cabinets over the summer.

Had a special guest at our show last night, Johnny Rabb, drummer for Collective Soul, hung out with us and sat in on a CS song! We played "Shine". I'm posting it here(and in the Arkham Sound thread!), because the bass is mainly from my rig! Please excuse the poor video quality and the suspect playing and the excessively mediocre background vocals, I'm working on it...

Johnny Rabb is one of the NICEST, coolest, down-to-earth, humble pro musicians I've ever met! And he's a BEAST on the drums(which would explain how he got the gig with Collective Soul!)

Wow Pbass6811- that's really cool. I saw the band live awhile ago in NYC and they put on a good show. You sounded great in that clip.

I am pondering another LDS cab build. I will become a Rickenbacker owner on Friday and have been thinking of running the bass in stereo. I now use an SVTII and Don's Faital 115 ported cab and am thinking of having Don build me a cab for either one of my other amps. I have a Mesa D180 which is 200 watts and an old but awesome Traynor YBA-1 a which is 80 watts. I'd run the neck pup clean to the SVT and bridge to one of the other amps, most likely the Traynor.

I've been obsessed with Don's 4x8 cabs with B&C drivers and thought an 8 ohm 4x8 cab would sound sweet in the mids with tubes. Any advice would be great. I talked to Don about it months ago and may go through with a build.

Alright good people, looking for some wisdom. A friend of mine is building a 100w tube head for me, somewhat of a classic portaflex design with modern(?) adjustments (2x KT88s). I'm talking with Don about either a 15/6 or a 15/8. For loud stuff I have a SVT-VR i play through a Aguilar 4x12, I'm pondering possibly getting rid of the 4x12 and perhaps getting two LDS 15/6 or 15/8s to use together with the SVT.
Any thoughts on tone difference between a 15/6 and 15/8? I like the idea of a 6 for a more compact rig for home and smaller gigs. Also, could two of these cabs handle a SVT?
cheers

I can't speak for the 15/8 - but I have a LDS 15/6 and 12/6 and they both sound great - individually and together. Both easily handle my SVT7 Pro. You can check out some pics and thoughts here: NCD: LDS 12/6

I am sure two 15/6's would be awesome but I find one is usually more than enough.

Also, I really do like having the 12/6 option and would recommend that its worth considering. Its so much easier to move around. I sometimes get funny looks when I show up with it but that almost always turns into looks and comments of amazement. It can really handle and push power.

I leave the 15/6 at my main bands jam spot. The 12/6 is at home and goes out to other jams or practice sessions. The 15/6 gets the gigs - just because - though I am pretty sure the 12/6 could handle most situations. I combine them for big stuff or sometimes just for fun.

I get many compliments about how big and clear the bass sounds through these cabs.

You cant go wrong working with Don - as long as you're patient and don't mind an 'old school man of his word' style. Also, he almost always answers his phone.

Without knowing what specific drivers you want to you, and if you're trying to vary from a fEARFul design or, what; I have no comment.
Thanks for responding. Well after finding some more helpful threads I think I'm deciding on Kappalite 3015LF with the 6.5" mid, no tweeter. I'm leaning towards a 24"w 22"h 16"d box (one of Don's recs), which I don't think is the fearful design. Still waiting for a response from Don (last message I sent was Friday, probably weekend radio silence)
Cheers

Here's a shot of my new LDS single 15". On my first gig with it the band loved it. The stage we play on is really wide and not very deep but the dispersion was really great. The keyboard player on my far right said it sounded great whereas he usually hasn't heard me much except through the monitors. Nice deep, low end and I feel like I barely pushed it.

Which driver did you get?

When I was gigging bars my LDS 15/6 pretty much made all my other cabs redundant. It was physically small enough for a quiet/tight space, and could easily cover anything larger indoors. I miss it, but no longer play out except exceptionally so the cabs I have now are all smaller.

Lomo had a really good one. But hey, he is a good guy and deserves nice things. I really liked the 2x12 version that I played many gigs with. The 3012lf is a really punchy, controlled driver. I wouldn't mind having a pa based around them. Like a full audiokinesis pa system.

I have a 15/6 and a 112 with the Faital 12PR300.

The 15/6 is always plenty and the 112 usually. My gigs are small. The 115 would still be a one hand carry.
