a book for you ...

sonic assassin, you don't give your age in your profile. Feel free to say "none of your business" if you wish, but how many years have you been on this planet?

Remind me never to be your friend. People with drug problems have deeper issues and the last thing they need is for their support system to turn their backs on them. People make mistakes and it seems like forgiveness isn't in your vocabulary.

i give people one chance to cut the **** and let me help them. with anything. if they decline, they have voluntarily waltzed out of my life. their decision, not mine.

i dont need those "people" in my life bringing me down.

they dont have deeper issues, other than the fact that they have no willpower. they want to escape. what about the rest of us that KNOW life is painful and deal with it? we garner no respect at all.

"my dad beat me, so i turned to drugs"

yea, well so did mine. and i turned to music and art. i made something better of myself with that experience.

redemption is a system that has a limited window. over time ill forgive that person that says "you know what, i hit the bottle a little too hard, you're right, im going to knock that off". ive talked people from the edge since i was old enough to think for myself (literally and figuratively).

but the guy that says "nah man, **** you, i LOVE me some coke". that guy is forgotten. MY friends wouldnt do those things. cause if they did, they wouldnt be my friends.

im not that guy that has time to make excuses for his friends. "oh, dont mind eddie, hes a little on edge because he ran out of vicodin". screw that. eddie is a dick, through and through. **** eddie.

21. and ive been making adult decisions about my life since i was 7. when my mother ran out on me. tell me, did YOU have to grow up in about 20 minutes when you were a child?

No disrespect intended. I agree with the direction of a lot of what you're saying but not the intensity or absoluteness, so I was wondering a little about your back-story.

I'd probably enjoy sitting down and talking about this with you over a beer (or non-alcoholic alternative of your choice). I respect your degree of conviction and ideas about taking responsibility for oneself, but would gently suggest that there are more "maybes" in the world than you are currently acknowledging.

I wasn't referring to the working poor being the biggest drain. I'm referring to the boomers retiring, the fact that a LOT of companies are still out-sourcing, and there is STILL a LOT of people out of work. Social Security is getting bigger, Medicare is getting bigger, and businesses are contracting for a higher profit margin for their stockholders. I'm arguing that if we as a society don't want to support using welfare dollars for this (or more precisely, what I was saying earlier, people that abuse the system), and want to put something, hell - anything - in place to try to start to stem the bleeding...sign me up.

The areas in bold are the "elsewhere" that I was referring to.

If we can make progress on the areas that will make a difference, then the welfare, issue will become even less of an issue. As it is, the poor, infirmed and others on fixed income are really not a major source of our economic woes. They are also left out of the business and public policy making loop. They aren't the decision makers of this country, yet too many people (generally speaking) point to them for blame first.

Crap. Now to respond I have to open another window so I can see where you did the bold pring....

Well, I guess we could kill all the old people...or at least anybody we could call a boomer...

Realistically we have to look at Health Care. That's too big of a subject for this thread really, and I'm fairly certain we're going to agree to disagree.

Businesses making a higher profit/companies outsourcing - I guess something could be done...neither of us will be happy on solutions - I'm basing this on my judgments on our positions on this; maybe that's wrong - but I know my positions, and based upon your position on this, you're probably not to the conservative end of the spectrum.

I'm not sure on your position on boomers retiring...if they've been told when they can retire for years though it's kind of screwed to tell them, "nope, you can go a few more years yet"...

Other than that, I still don't see your position as to why you are against it...

No disagreement that there's a thousand holes in this particular bucket. The OP did ask people's thoughts about just one specific issue, though. The thread has meandered somewhat.

True, most of that's my fault - being that I kind of did an aside, which kind of tied into the whole "drug usage while on welfare/Benefit abuse" thing that the thread had morphed into. I tried to bring it back though....and then I lost control of it...

Its amusing that some people look at the world in such a black and white manner, all the while claiming to be so grown up. Growing up hard and tough doesn't remove all naivety. Sonicassassin, you may be surprised at how your views change over the years, the hardline views you've taken from growing up how you did could very well change and mellow out a little in years to come, when you realise that things aren't always as simple as we'd all like them to be.

The world isn't made up of, "the goodies and the baddies" like in a spaghetti western, your black and white view doesn't differentiate between the person who smokes a spliff at the weekend and the wife beaters and rapists of society. You may defend your position and insist that the world is all black and white, but some day you yourself may be in one of the grey areas, maybe then you'll understand a little better.

.

What about the guy who says "I'm having a beer that I paid for myself, it's my body, and I'm not hurting you or anyone else" ? Where does he fit in this classification?

Lets not turn this into a who has it worse match. Plenty of people have it bad, that should make you more compassionate, not resentful.

im stating the ground on which i sit to see such a perspective. my age says little to nothing about what i know about the world, as i started learning it very very early.

children arent supposed to know that human kind is steeped in malice. they are supposed to watch cartoons and play with legos. to find out your mother wants nothing to do with you is a crushing blow that some adults dont take well, let alone a child.

yes it does.

ive mellowed a great deal since i was 14. this is my calmer, more respectful mode of discussion.

occasional drug users and rapists go into the same category in my book. theres a line. a bold one. my side, and everyone elses. you cross it, and you're one of them.

ive got a big tattoo on my chest that says ill never be in your happy-go-lucky denial ridden gray area. i stand my ground, for better or worse.
