Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Agreed on all of the above.
I can't gig with 300 watts at 4ohms with a super efficient 1x15 cab with a loud band in a bar with no monitors. Our guitar players use a Peavey Classic 30 (30 watts w/ 1x12) and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (1 x12 with 40 watts)
For the record it didn't matter if I used a WA or an SVT; the same outcome of too hot a stage volume, against a masonry or glass wall with little or no headroom
Even a 2x12 was a stretch and not enough headroom at stupid loud.
The TH500 or 7-Pro offer so much more authority and punch because of increased wattage and headroom.
OTOH I used to use a 2x15 with a V4B or Acoustic 370 with a band that was not loud in the exact same rooms without problems.

The issue is speaker efficiency (almost always higher with multiple drivers) and how loud is loud. Room acoustics can also very.

This from the Mesa site regarding the 250 watt Prodigy:

These guys have jumped the shark and have apparently changed the laws of physics if distortion levels from SS to tube are the same.
Yes tube amps of the same wattage can appear louder if you increase the distortion. They should be embarrassed with this load of crap.


I don't see what the problem is with that advertising- they only said that tube amps SOUND louder than equivalently rated SS amps, which in my experience can often be the case. Lots of factors contribute- compression and added harmonic content in the midrange being the big ones I think, both of which make tube amps sound louder especially when pushed. You can emulate those factors with a SS amp too- the Walkabout is a great example, and that amp to me cuts through a mix better than any other 300 watt SS amp I've owned if you push the Gain and Volume a bit.

An uber-powerful solid state amp can pummel most tube amps in big uncompressed low-end reproduction, but those aren't the frequencies we hear the most efficiently and can get lost in a mix whereas the pumped up midrange of a driven tube amp cuts right through. Soloed through my 610 cab I can almost make myself sick with the amount of low end my DB750 puts out without a sweat and give myself ear fatigue at relatively moderate Master settings, but in a band mix my 250 watt Prodigy actually sounds louder to my whole band (and this is with the Mids on the Aguilar bumped significantly). I had the same experience comparing my old 400+ and SVT to an Ampeg SVT-4Pro through an 810.

So it is true that a watt always equals a watt from a mechanical perspective (which means a high powered amp will always pummel a lower powered amp through an inefficient or heavily scooped speaker), but through a fairly efficient speaker a tube amp CAN sound louder than an amp several times it's power rating (but only by sounding and responding noticeably different!).

Instead, the Walkabout is known to be underpowered and the Prodigy has plenty of output based on this thread. What is the other factor here? They are similarly rated, with the WA rated higher of the two.

Edit - for example, car engines are rated in horsepower, but two engines of similar horsepower may not produce the same 0-60 time in the same vehicle. Torque is a factor. Power through the RPM range is a factor. What is the thing we are overlooking here? Is it the EQ baked in? Is it the harmonic content, or the compression?
 
I agree with you guys.
All I can say is that with testing through an Ampeg A/B switch, my SVT-CL and Walkabout produced approx. the same output levels with very low distortion through either a Berg HT322, TL606, or Dr. Bass 2x12 with tweeter.

I like clean, clear, big 3D soundstage with minimal distortion and clean headroom.
Many others have different goals.

I've rarely heard the Walkabout described as "underpowered" unless being compared to a head with significantly more wattage. For a 300 watt head it gets pretty dang loud as long as you don't try to push too much deep low end. When you attenuate the lows and bump the low mids and push the Gain a bit to add some harmonic distortion then it acts and sounds very similar to the Prodigy. The difference is that the Prodigy does all those things inherently as you push the power tubes while the Walkabout needs to be tweaked to sound like that in the preamp as it's power section is much more linear. The onset of light distortion in the Prod is also much smoother to my ears so you can crank it higher before the power distortion is super noticeable. I think the main reason the Walkabout runs out of juice too early for many is the wide bottom-end response that eats up headroom quickly. Attenuate a good chunk of those subs with a high-pass filter and put it through a lot of speaker and it really cranks in my experience. I have yet to do a direct comparison in a mix, but I've been able to successfully use both in my band at different times through a 610 cab and the main difference I can recall is that the Walkabout tended to get a fuzzy quality earlier than the Prodigy at the volume we play and tended towards a bigger bottom end even with some attenuation and a more bouncy sort of compression (possibly a result of the extra lows hitting the driver tube).

Walkabout Heads do not ship with Speakon connections. Only 1/4. The other higher end heads do. As far as ohms... both are 4ohm cabs? Thats dropping down to 2ohms when both plugged in. I don't think the Walkabout will run that well. You can combine 4 and 8 both ways (2.67Ohms) without an issue but 2 Ohms.... I would contact Customer Support on that.

Get a cheap digital multimeter and check the ohms of the speaker in the extension cab. It could be an 8ohm in 4 ohm enclosure. If it is 4 ohms, I would contact the seller. It was represented as 8.

The gang at Mesa will not recommend you run at 2 ohm. But with that being said. Many on here including myself have run @ 2ohm without any problems.
It is quite possible the the previous owner switched out the original speaker with an 8 ohm.

Thanks Guys!!!….One thing is for sure the "Mesa Walkabout Club" are on top of their stuff and very resourceful…The previous owner pm'ed me and said it was a replacement speaker…will have to do that test or open up cab….again Thanks Guys!!
 
that doesn't look like a dual use speakon, to me.
easy enough to change to one.
Mesa never did speakons on Scout cabs, that I know of, nor on the head

I didn't think so either, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

The only Speakon combo jacks I've found are intended for soldering to a printed circuit board rather than connecting to individual conductors.

Don't want to be Debbie Downer, but a 4 ohm 112 paired with an 8 ohm 112 is not the best thing. Unequal power distribution, with the 4 ohm cab taking 2/3 of the power, and the 8 ohm with only 1/3. Just an fyi, but I'd be careful with that set up. 2.6 ohms is no big deal, but to make it work evenly, you'd need a 4 ohm 2x12 and an 8 ohm 1x12. Congrats on the new rig anyway, the tone is bliss.

A couple of weeks ago i ran my Mesa Scout 4Ω combo with my 8Ω Genz Uber115... It worked out great. Did about 7 gigs with it like that... .. No issues, and both cabs sounded about equal in output...
i rarely listen to folks that say "theoretically" it wont work.. Because many times it does .. and in a good way..
I ran a 4 ohm scout 12 with an 8 ohm diesel 115 for quite a while
That worked really well

Assuming the Scout has a 12" speaker this would actually be expected since the 15 would have a higher output due to more speaker area, so the difference in power draw would help balance them output-wise.
