Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread part 3:

After playing a couple gigs with the combo, I gotta say, this is the best sounding amp I've ever owned, by far. There's nothing about the tone I dislike.... There was always something about my tone with other amps I couldn't fix, no matter how I tried. Oh, and this thing is loud as crap! I love it!!

Only issue I've run into so far is that the amp sometimes cuts out randomly sometimes. I think i narrowed it down to being an issue with the 1/4" plug going to the speakers. I could wiggle it and get the signal to cut out. I replaced it with a Speakon plug, and it's not cut out once since.

I have a Mesa M6 combo that I have been gigging with four the past 8 months. I love this amp so much! However, it has started to make a bad crackling noise off and on when only certain notes are played. I have switched out the preamp tube, but this did nothing. I tried using the head on a different cab and I couldn't duplicate the sound. I also used a different head on the cab and couldn't duplicate the sound. The only time it went away was after fiddling with the power cable going to the cab. It went away for a little, but now it is back. I don't know if it could be a weak solder in the cabinet circuitry or something with the amp. Anyone have any clue?

I just wanted to update people on this issue... I have had it fixed for some time now and wanted to make sure if anyone else had the problem, they would have an idea of what worked out for me! I sent the amp head back to Mesa and all the work was covered under warranty. I can't say enough about their customer service! A+++! 3 weeks later, I had my amp back, working better than new! 2 of the FETs were shorted out and they replaced the set of 4 FETs. I guess that certain notes really brought out the issue. They also made some modifications to stabilize the FETs to prevent the same issue from occurring again. Total cost = $40 shipping. Not bad! I love this amp more than ever! :)

You get what you pay for. Mesa seems expensive, BUT you get the Rolls Royce of bass amps with a 5 year warranty and the BEST customer service in the business !! The tone BLOWS away the competition, and that is priceless...

Congrats on getting you M6 FETS changed. I'm sure Boba will be happy :smug:

I took my M3 there and George the Genius changed all the Boba FETS and did upgrades, etc. Like yours, it's now BETTER than new !! I love Mesa...

Picked up my new-to-me M6 combo today (well, technically yesterday) and I'm stoked. Got it all cleaned up, replaced the cheapest 1/4" plug known to mankind on the speaker cord with a proper Speakon connector and now we're set. Hopefully I can crank it up a bit tomorrow.

Cheers,

Raz

As I posted above, the amp kept cutting out when I first got it. It was the combo plug. Replacing it with a Speakon took the problem away for good. I gigged the combo for close to a year before replacing it with something bigger. Used it on a couple jam nights, and it still worked flawlessly.

I picked up a Mesa M6 Carbine about a month ago. I have used it on about 5 gigs so far. This amp has some power! I use it with an Eden D-210XST and I can say I never heard this cab sound so full and punchy before. I can’t wait for the first outdoor gig when I can add my second Eden cabinet.

I have had 3 M6s so far.. My first was the Original version .. the FATHOM... I buy them and then sell them... Only to buy another..
I can see myself getting another one on a few months.. I love the way it does CLEAN.... and its big and rolly polly while doing clean... I want another..

Or for a different flavor, a 1000Watt Walkabout would suit me just fine...

I do the EXACT same thing. I still own my sixth M6. :D

I've been running a stereo rig (at home) for a while now- M3 into an Aggie DB210 on the left, Walkabout into an Aggie DB112 on the right. It's absolutely the sweetest bass tone my ears have ever heard, with a stereo fx chain to shimmer it up even more. Huge Mesa fan here.

thinking of getting a Mesa rig at some point in the future and I'm about positive I want to go with a pair of ph115's...I am looking at maybe a prodigy or either a carbine m6 to power it...is the m6 as loud or louder than the prodigy? I haven't had a chance to play them both side by side with the same cabs...just curious

I plan to get a Prodigy, as well. I own the Walkabout and M6, too. I plan to just add the Prodigy to the stable. The Prodigy is AMAZING, but as far as volume goes, I have yet to hear an amp louder and cleaner at loud volumes to add than the M6. It is second the the sound of jets on a 747...

Not sure but I can give you a somewhat edumacated guesstimate, as I own a Bass 400 (non+) and got to crank up the combo a little this evening.

If it were me trying to pick between the two, I'd probably get the Prodigy as I really like what the 400 delivers, and the Prodigy is a 250-watt tube head in a smaller package. I think the M6 would give more clean headroom, but what are your goals? If primarily clean with solid lows that don't run out of steam, go with a SS amp like the M6 or probably the M9. If you like what tubes do when they get loud (natural compression, OD the output stage, etc.) then go for the Prodigy.

If I put just the M6 amp up against my 400 I think through the same cab the Carbine would be louder and have more low end. I power an Ampeg PR810H with the Mesa; I'd like to hear the differences myself and will probably do a head-to-head test some day just to see what happens.

Additionally, this is my first experience with 12's (and they're NEO's) and I'm very impressed. Mesa's 212 cab goes deep, has highs, sounds smooth and balanced, and gets pretty darn loud - far more than what it would ever be called upon to produce for the environments I'll use it in. I dare say it's solved my amp/cab gas for probably a while. I can also see why 12's are the new 15's. I like dual 15" cabs, but I really like the sound I get out of this beastly little combo.

Anyway, that's my biased opinion for you. :D

Say, is there an explanation somewhere about how the voice selector works? Meaning, is it a digital effect on the sound or are there analog filters being activated (like internally preset EQ voicings)? Just curious, it sounds like a digital effect to me, just my initial impression. Not bad, just not like twisting knobs. Has anyone else noticed that? No I haven't read through all the threads yet.

Thanks,

Razman

Double E:
I totally disagree.
When I search Sadowsky, the megathread deosn't even come up. Same for Valenti and Nordstrand. That's weak sauce.
Same with Walkabout Megathread, Carbine Megathread, Mesa Boogie...weak. nearly useless.
to me. ymmv, etc.

How do the threads with the most posts not show up? Grrr........
