Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread part 3:

Double E:
I totally disagree.
When I search Sadowsky, the megathread deosn't even come up. Same for Valenti and Nordstrand. That's weak sauce.
Same with Walkabout Megathread, Carbine Megathread, Mesa Boogie...weak. nearly useless.
to me. ymmv, etc.

How do the threads with the most posts not show up? Grrr........
Works great if you choose "most recent" the problem is, you have to click into the "more..." screen to get that option. I started a thread in the suggestions forum but it has been ignored... I think I will go bump it right now.

Furthermore, once you get to the "more..." screen, you have to re-select the sub-forum you want to search as well.

It is sort of a PITA but it is more powerful than the old search once you master it. Plus, you are no longer limited to three or more letters, I hated that.

I've noticed this also. Makes me wonder what my searches aren't finding. I try to be specific most of the time and can generally find what I'm looking for.

Not sure but I can give you a somewhat edumacated guesstimate, as I own a Bass 400 (non+) and got to crank up the combo a little this evening.

If it were me trying to pick between the two, I'd probably get the Prodigy as I really like what the 400 delivers, and the Prodigy is a 250-watt tube head in a smaller package. I think the M6 would give more clean headroom, but what are your goals? If primarily clean with solid lows that don't run out of steam, go with a SS amp like the M6 or probably the M9. If you like what tubes do when they get loud (natural compression, OD the output stage, etc.) then go for the Prodigy.

If I put just the M6 amp up against my 400 I think through the same cab the Carbine would be louder and have more low end. I power an Ampeg PR810H with the Mesa; I'd like to hear the differences myself and will probably do a head-to-head test some day just to see what happens.

Additionally, this is my first experience with 12's (and they're NEO's) and I'm very impressed. Mesa's 212 cab goes deep, has highs, sounds smooth and balanced, and gets pretty darn loud - far more than what it would ever be called upon to produce for the environments I'll use it in. I dare say it's solved my amp/cab gas for probably a while. I can also see why 12's are the new 15's. I like dual 15" cabs, but I really like the sound I get out of this beastly little combo.

Anyway, that's my biased opinion for you. :D

i go for more clean headroom, so it sounds like the m6 might be a better option for me...i know from what i've read that the prodigy is voiced a little differently than the strategy and does 'clean' a little better, but if the m6 has more headroom, then it might be the ticket...i'm using a later version eden wt800c, which is pretty loud to my ears...i'm using an ampeg pr-410hlf which can take it, too...

In my experience, the M6 will crush a WT800.
I was a long time Eden user (some many years ago now) and recently bought a used WT800B so I'd have some big power head with 2 ohm capability. I was underwhelmed, flipped it and started looking for an M6/9...ended up with the M6.

fwiw; I just did this for "Nordy" and the ''most recent '' megathread that came up was a closed one.
I had to go to the end of that, and forward one more megathread, and then to the end of that to find the current one. boo.

Deafening is an M9 and two 15/6/1 fEARfuls, stacked with a reverse baffle cabinet on top. Wish I actually needed both more often—and naturally I always wear ear protection, even with one. The funny thing is I ended up with an M9 because I couldn't find a used M6.
   No—not complaining.

So I think I'm up to page 3x-something of this thread, very informative and entertaining. Gotta do something until I get a chance to put my new rig through it's paces at practice this Friday.

My band is playing Saturday night and I'm torn between bringing the Carbine combo or the main rig. I don't like using gear like that unless proven first, but if it handles our practice well (which I expect it to) I think I might take it along for the gig.

A note about the mids - this combo cuts like a red-hot knife through butter, but in a musically fitting way. Had the mids at noon but I'm going to dial them down after reading the manual and discovering it is a boost-only knob. As others have commented, why that knob has a center detent and the bass knob doesn't is strange. Every other comment in the thread is spot-on.

Eureka! I've finally discovered the cure for amplifier GAS! YMMV of course, but this little combo did it for me. Well, at least for the foreseeable future.

Sat's show went great, sound man had nothing but compliments on my tone, he loves the thing also. Barely had it turned up as we were in a very small room with FOH support too. I did use something to tip it up at an angle so I could hear it better; otherwise no issues at all.

In your opinion, for punk and rock, a carbine 6 is a good choice?
How is the the sound of the valve, is similar like a all alve?

I play punk, metal and hard rock. I was playing in a hard rock cover band with a Carbine M6 212 combo. It was insanely loud; I couldn't turn it up past 2. It has an extremely clean, punchy sound. The gain knob is just on the amp for looks; the preamp tubes do nothing in terms of gain/distortion.
I then purchased a Walkabout and 2 of the 12" cabs; my band told me that they liked the sound 500% better than the m6. Then, I used it in a punk band, and it sounded amazing.
At 50%, the gain produces such nice tube grind; no pedal or effects processor out there can mimic the sound. If you have the option, I'd go with the Walkabout; your sound will have so much more color and personality. The Carbines are just too clean for me.
