So - you all know Anthony Jackson is playing at the Dakota with Hiromi and Steve Smith tonight and tomorrow, right?

I had the pleasure of going last night. All I can say is "wow." I'm so glad I got to see those 3 perform. Hiromi was just a delight! Though I couldnt see Anthony all that well from where we sat - I left with more inspiration than I've had in months.

Truly wonderful.

Back in the late 70s, I made use of a Musicians Referral Service in Minneapolis. I think it was run out of a house on S. Lyndale, & basically amounted to a collection of loose-leaf binders. Bands could look for musicians & musicians could look for bands. Everybody filled out a form that went into one of the books, & others could browse the books looking for what they needed.

I found a lot of good contacts back then. Obviously, that was before the Internet, Craig's List, etc. I was wondering if there is anything like that still around.

Well, little late to the party. My name is Mike, I live in Hibbing Minnesota, hometown of Bob Dylan. I have been a guitar player for many years, but have recently switched over to bass out of necessity. Currently pounding on an OLP Ray5 copy into an SWR WorkingPro400 head and 4x10 cab(still badly need another 8 ohm cab to get me down to 4ohms). Have my eyes on a Spector Rebop 5 as a replacement for the OLP, but am still entertaining adding a Nordstrand MM5.2 to the OLP as well.

I figured I'd write a review for this guy [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
I picked up a '67 Guild Starfire in Akeley, it needed a complete rewiring, setup, couple small repairs, and thorough cleaning.
I figured this would be a good gambit of things to check this guy out. See what he can do.
Overall, his work was good. His quote was very low, a regular shop would've been much higher IME. So he's pretty economical.

The good:
-He turned it around in 3 days, which is pretty fast.
- Action and intonation are good
-He’s competitively priced
-The electronics are solid

The not as good:
-He didn't really clean things up from the last amateur rewiring (loose wire on pickups, poorly spliced leads, etc.) as much as I would've liked.
-He didn't adjust the polepieces to even out string volume. When I asked him about that he told me I could do it myself. (I thought I was paying him to setup my guitar)
-I asked him to reglue the headstock facing, which he did not manage to do. Not sure why.
-He redid the strap buttons, which were stripped out, but he used wood filler instead of a dowel to fill the holes. IME, that’s not a solid repair, though I’m not sure what filler he used.
-He did not have a very professional attitude at times. He made some comments about my finances that I did not appreciate, and when I came to pick the bass up the bill was $50 higher than quoted (still cheaper than a shop though). He became very defensive when I asked him why it was so much higher, implying I was insulting his work. There was nothing surprising about the job, a more experienced luthier would’ve provided a more accurate quote.
- I asked him to clean remnants of red glitter from the fretboard (don’t ask me :ninja:) and he did not get them all. I finished the job at home.

So overall, if you need straightforward electronics/setup work I’d recommend him. For more detailed non-standard work, I’d go to a shop. You’ll pay more, but some repairs require a more customer focused tech.

I've been travelling a lot for work lately, and one of the places I have to go to frequently these days is Murfreesboro, TN. The first time I was there, I didn't think much of it. It's a friendly town, but I always miss Mpls when I'm gone for work purposes. Anyways, this last time I was there, I remembered that The Low End bass store was there. I made it a point to visit it this week. What a cool place. If any of you visit Nashville in the future, take the 20-30 minute drive to Murfreesboro and check that store out. You won't regret it. Absolutely nothing but nice stuff.

On a related note, I think I'm now in love with a Benavente single cut 5.
