I figured I'd write a review for this guy [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
I picked up a '67 Guild Starfire in Akeley, it needed a complete rewiring, setup, couple small repairs, and thorough cleaning.
I figured this would be a good gambit of things to check this guy out. See what he can do.
Overall, his work was good. His quote was very low, a regular shop would've been much higher IME. So he's pretty economical.
The good:
-He turned it around in 3 days, which is pretty fast.
- Action and intonation are good
-He’s competitively priced
-The electronics are solid
The not as good:
-He didn't really clean things up from the last amateur rewiring (loose wire on pickups, poorly spliced leads, etc.) as much as I would've liked.
-He didn't adjust the polepieces to even out string volume. When I asked him about that he told me I could do it myself. (I thought I was paying him to setup my guitar)
-I asked him to reglue the headstock facing, which he did not manage to do. Not sure why.
-He redid the strap buttons, which were stripped out, but he used wood filler instead of a dowel to fill the holes. IME, that’s not a solid repair, though I’m not sure what filler he used.
-He did not have a very professional attitude at times. He made some comments about my finances that I did not appreciate, and when I came to pick the bass up the bill was $50 higher than quoted (still cheaper than a shop though). He became very defensive when I asked him why it was so much higher, implying I was insulting his work. There was nothing surprising about the job, a more experienced luthier would’ve provided a more accurate quote.
- I asked him to clean remnants of red glitter from the fretboard (don’t ask me

) and he did not get them all. I finished the job at home.
So overall, if you need straightforward electronics/setup work I’d recommend him. For more detailed non-standard work, I’d go to a shop. You’ll pay more, but some repairs require a more customer focused tech.
