One month later, the Cubs pulled within 1.5 games of the Brewers before losing last night to the Dbacks. They have a 90% chance of making the playoffs, though a division title would certainly be preferable to a wild card slot.

The Mariners play something like seven of their last ten games against Texas. If everyone wears out Texas pitching like seems to be what's happening lately, it's good for the Mariners. Houston didn't play yesterday, and the Mariners beat Tampa Bay, so a half game back now. I'm not optimistic about Seattle's chances of winning a four game series in Tampa Bay, but then I wasn't optimistic about beating up the Astros like they have this season. A series with the Dodgers is still coming up, too. This is not going to be a cake walk into the playoffs, no matter what happens.

There was supposed to be a news conference this weekend to announce Stephen Strasburg's retirement but apparently that's not happening anymore. I don't think Strasburg ever formally announced his retirement... The Athletic is reporting that the Nats approached him about retiring earlier this summer, and that they now want to change his original contract terms and work out a settlement. Hard to imagine any player going for that..! In any case, a sad situation. This guy was must-see-TV for a while in the 2010's. Such a good pitcher. One baseball blogger I used to follow would refer to everyday Strasburg started as "Stras-mas", that's how big a deal his starts were when he burst onto the scene. I have always had a pretty strong negative opinion about the Nats (still sad about the Expos being gone) but I got over that to watch and cheer for Strasburg. It was great to see him win a World Series. Bummer that we won't get to see him pitch again.

It was a bad contract to begin with... 7 years and that much money to a 30 year old starter with some injury history wasn't a good idea. But the team offered him the contract. Riding the high of the World Series win probably played a part in the decision making... but there was nothing stopping them from offering less. IMO the Nats look rather foolish now the way they're handling their own mistake.

George Kirby will be going for the Mariners this afternoon. They have a decent chance against the Rays. Kirby is a solid starter. The next two games are a little iffy, with Woo and Miller starting. Both are rookies who have never pitched as many innings or as late as this. Both have good stuff, but they both seem to be wearing down just a little. I'll take a split against the Rays and be happy.

Yeah, the Angels and the As coming up. And the Dodgers. At least they get the Dodgers at home. And then ten to end the season against Texas and Houston. That's going to be fun.

Jays keep losing to the damn Rangers. Ugh. Now they’re one game back of the third WC spot. After the finale with Texas today, the rest of the schedule is against AL East teams. And the Jays have a very poor record against the division so far this year. This is likely going to be a painful finish to the season :eek:
