Modulus Mob

Hello Mob -

I'm considering buying this bass used: 2008 FB5-JJ, with Barts and 3-band EQ. It's got a few dings, otherwise in nice shape, very fast (but glossy) neck. I don't know a lot about these basses, other than what I've read here and in the 2012 Modulus catalog, which seems to offer just a 2-band EQ for the FU. Was the 3band EQ a custom option in 2008? Any other general comments / experiences / caveats? Estimated value?
Thanks!

Modulus values are not consistant

Me personally I'd consider spending about 1500-1700 on that. I love my funk 4. Best bass I've ever had and will never sell. Totally just me but I would spend the extra few months to save up and buy new. I love a warranty and Tony at Planet Bass can get you a really good deal on a new model usually at a price close to what people are asking for a used model. Great dude and highly recommended. Just ordered a stealth VJ yesterday as a matter of fact :-)

Status and Zon use carbon fiber weave, Modulus uses pressed carbon matrix (more similar to brake rotors!).

Is that true of the entire structure, or just of the outside layer? I really haven't researched the construction methodologies of any of these companies too extensively, but I know for a lot of other carbon fiber products the visible pattern -- be it a small weave, large weave, unidirectional fiber orientation, or a Thousand Ladies Dancing -- is a cosmetic layer that has little if any impact on performance...and that underneath this top layer the CF is layed up in whatever method makes the most sense to yield the desired result regardless of what it may look like.

Just wondering (especially) if the KLD on a Modulus neck is thru&thru, or just the outermost layer?

I would contact Modulus direct. They've actually gotten a TON better at costumer service and they would probably really enjoy nerding out on the process :-)

I know from experience that the construction of the Modulus and Zons necks are very similar. There is a pretty well thought out internal method for laying up the pre-impregnated carbon fiber with the outer layer being mainly cosmetic. I believe that Status is also very similar, in fact I believe that while the Modulus patent was still active Status aquired rights to use the technology.

Modulus made the Zon necks and were the same construction. The outside layer is more cosmetic and the orientation of the fibers on the inside are oriented in such a way to provide strength and stability. There are quite a few Modulus necks with a weave outer layer as well as the chopped KLD and even random fibers.

Er, I hope you aren't talking about currently, because that wouldn't be true.

Modulus necks are not of the same construction as Zon and Status necks.

Angus,
Both DONK and I worked at Modulus for many years, and have built the necks including ones that went to Zon. Unless Modulus or Zon have completely re-engineered their graphite necks recently, the are still very similar construction. The one that's appears to be drasticly different is Moses, which I believe is a completely different design.

BTW, I'm hoping to recieve my new "Graphite Guitar Systems" bass next Saturday...Yay, will post a NBD when I do get it.

I'd love to see the GGS when it comes. I wish he has a site as I've considered seeing how much a custom would be since I can't afford a cust Mod any time soon but prefer the Modulus neck.

got my VJ in the shop right now getting a batterybox installed. the delano single coils and the ACG EQ-02 are a total match. i get her back in a few days!

By the by, I would like my old mob # back if that is possible!

Funny, mine is in the shop as well, getting a chip in the neck finish repaired. Also put Delano pickups on it, but paired it with a J-Retro Deluxe, so no need for a battery box.

After a long stint away from a Quantum, I am back in the game!

It'll be my first experience with an EMG-loaded Q5. The others I had were Barts.
