Modulus Mob

when staring down at the pot, there's nothing soldered to the left "peg" (sorry the name escapes me). the middle peg has the the blue wire from the obp-1 and a white wire from the bridge vol. knob. the right peg has a capacitor (473k/.22 micro-farad) soldered from the right peg to the top of the pot. there's a ground wire also soldered to the top of the pot.

Sounds like a passive tone circuit wired in ahead of the OBP1 (blue wire from the OBP1 is the input). Also often called a "vintage tone control" when used along with an active EQ. Since passive tone circuits act differently from active treble EQ, some like to have that additional "flavor" available. Doesn't really change anything when left wide open, so if you've got a hole for the knob, might as well have one.

My latest addition to the family, unfortunately there is no truss rod and there is a little too much relief. Hoping to find someone in the NYC area to to a refret and leveling of the fingerboard.

you, sir, are a super genius!

yeah, the capacitor should have been the tip-off but never thought of ever having a passive tone along with an active circuit.

also the lack of an individual circuit board with a mid-knob should have been a clue.

all i knew was when i was playing and i started to play with the knob, i assumed it was a mid-knob due to the change in tone in the low-mids to mids area.

thanks for the insight!

Nice looking bass! Please keep us updated on your progress regarding the refret
and setup project.
I haven't seen many pre-truss rod Q5's that need this kind of work, but can't say the same regarding Modulus's pre-truss rod 4 string necks.

BTW, what wood is that on the top?

I was told bubinga and cherry body, looks right. I have to say besides the too much relief, which isn't horrible, this is the most amazing sound Modulus i have ever owned, and I have owned five up to this point all Q5 and Q6's, sold them. I am not selling this one....sounds like a grand piano. I will spend the money to make it perfect because it should be.

Any update on Modulus going back into business? I have been wanting to join this mob for a long time, but really want to get one built just for me rather than buying used. If I'm gonna drop the cash might as well do it big!

yep you can buy them at planetbass.com

The owner of planetbass is now a co-owner of modulus i believe.

Not sure if they are taking custom orders right now but thats where you go to get them

second that

lets hear it!
i am a bit curious what options (basic or otherwise) modulus is offering at this point in time.

since they're just ramping up, i'd assume it's bare-bones.

but if i could put together a "super-outrageous" build, my laundry-list would probably include:

1. tbx-5 neck-thru
2. mahogany wings with cocobolo caps on the front and back
3. barts married to an aguilar pre

Send them an email. I did yesterday and he responded in about an hour. I really want a Q6...I think :D

I am loving the Q5 I got just a little while ago. Now that I have had some time on it I just appreciate it even more. As someone who has built several guitars from scratch I appreciate the technology and thought. I know traditionalist would argue, but from a strictly use perspective I just can't believe they didn't catch on even more. We have had extreme temp changes in the east of late. 70 one day and snow the next. It is exactly the same and hasn't gone out of tune once. I've had to tweak my P truss rod a couple of times, not to mention some fret sprout.

So, back to a custom...I don't really need a 6 for any work that would make me money. I would love it for jazz and fusion though. But then I thought maybe another Q5 with Aguilar PJ's and preamp Active/Passive...for a different sound ;)

Amen to that. Of all the parts of a bass/guitar, the neck is by far the most temperamental component. So for it to be totally immune to weather and be able to deliver such clarity in sound, all while being made so comfortable to play, it's a real wonder they aren't one of the industry leaders.

Granted, there's no way to make a cheaper/knock-off version of them for the entry level consumer.... So that's probably a big reason.

Im just happy that they're back in action at all, though. Even if it's at double the previous cost. Here's to Tony at planetbass for taking the initiative to keep it going! Cheers :bassist:!
