My guess is someone put that on there as a way of balancing the instrument on their lap or some other weird reason. Unless what was said earlier was true and it's to feel the bass in your guts. Which lol. That's stupid. hahah

There's the "Bass of Doom" and then there's the bass that is doomed. Maybe Robert Trujillo will take this on as a project. Since there's no apparent output jack, this revolutionary / revulsionary bass must be wireless.

OK, here's the deal. No jack, so it's obviously an early wireless system. The transmitter and antenna are in the radar dome thing. It's also able to track tornadoes and incoming missles.

It looks like a Japanese Fender that's been heavily modified. The pickguard is a 70's style replacement, and the tuners, control plate, neck plate, and bridge have been replaced. The finger board is extended, so I think the original was taken off and replaced. The neck decal looks just like the Japan (and even some U.S.) reissue decals as far as where the Offset Contour Body piece is. Fender got lazy and made the decal all one piece, when the originals from the 60's had the contour body part as a separate decal closer to the end of the headstock. The output jack could be sunken far into the hole that's drilled into the bottom of the bass. The control plate on there is actually for a stack knob set up. Even the pots are split shaft which is consistent with some Japanese Fender Jazz Basses. The dreaded mini pots.

How very odd. Looks like somebody glued a wooden bowl to the back as an experiment, maybe to enhance resonance like the gourd on a sitar. To speculate, the owner may have played sitting cross-legged on the floor (lotus position), holding the bass in his/her lap. In that case, I can sort of see an ergonomic advantage.

I have the same thing except it's my belly that holds the bass in the preferred position. I feel that works better and is more modular for when I have to play different basses.
