Underrated guitar player: Glen Campbell

Only other musicians really knew him for his guitar playing skills and abilities. To most of the world (including his accountants) his name meant country-pop fluff.

Lizzy is most definitely my favorite band. Dio era Rainbow is a close second.

Neil Schon

Journey catches a lot of hate these days, and Schon's romantic life choices would seem Invalid Link Removed, but if you listen to their early 80s heyday material Schon was a borderline guitar god. Even if some of the songs are considered teenybopper cheese his playing is solid. Listen to the solo in Still They Ride, for example.

A lot of those 70s / early 80s stadium rock bands have very solid musicians who were playing "contempory" rock tunes.

Tommy Shaw of Styx is another one that comes to mind.

I've never really cared too much about Journey per se,but Neil Schon's exploits with Jan Hammer and that HSAS "Through The Fire"disc was just KICK A#@$!!

George Harrison is definitely highly rated by legions of fans.

The OP is about underrated guitar players, not band members. His superior guitar skills, the Beatles aside, have long been underrated.

Holdsworth is extremely highly regarded among guitarists and non-guitarists. Holdsworth is the only guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen has ever praised.

I'm aware he's talking about guitarists, and I disagree. Ive read/heard lots of praise of Harrison, often for his slide work in particular.

He might not be the most underrated as he has featured in a couple of top 100's of best guitarist ever, but I would have to say J. Masicis from Dinosaur Jr., who in my opinion is one of the best rock guitarists ever.

I still don't see enough appreciate that.
