My rented backline adventures

It was a crazy tour. The next night we played two shows... The first, we opened up for a well known group at the Nokia Theater in LA (soooooooo AWESOME). My rig consisted of a Avalon U5 before a SVT 4 Pro into an 810e (the match for the svt cl).

The second show, we "headlined" a four band show at some club. My rig there consisted of a newer Acoustic 1x15 combo that sounded like a powerful wet fart.

All in all, it turned into a defining experience for me as a bass player. I learned that, much like work as a mechanic, having the right tools (gear) helps make the job easy. But sometimes, you just have to be able to use what you've got and make it work.

I know, sometimes you just have to make do.

Keeping this in mind, I might try to remember to agree to such tour terms (bass only) if all the bands on the tour are sharing a rig that's coming with the tour.

I carry a Tech 21 VT bass pedal as a sort of backup. Most of the shows I play, other bands have amps, so if someone's goes out, one of the other bassists will bring theirs in.

If I was on tour going places where we'd be the only band (or only band with bass), I'd probably bring a cheap backup head, even. But if not, then my pedal. It can get sort of an approximation of my amp's overdrive, which, while not as good, could serve in a pinch.

I'll tell you what though: a good di or preamp coming through a Clair Bros. 12" wedge is a beautiful thing! (And this coming from an ''amp guy")

Really? Monitor tweeter issues? You guys have something other than yourself in your monitor mix, right? ;-)

We listen to mixes everyday with tweeters. Doesn't mean the bass has to sound like a tweeter equipped cab. I know I treat my di signal so it doesn't. I bet Jimmy does too.

Got no issues with tweeter monitors because the only thing I ever have in them is my voice.

We listen to mixes everyday with tweeters. Doesn't mean the bass has to sound like a tweeter equipped cab. I know I treat my di signal so it doesn't. I bet Jimmy does too.

Did at one time and still do if I'm running distortion, but not since I installed the Geezers in my basses. Doesn't come off too trebly in the house but haven't tried them in a monitor yet. Maybe they'll be better, but I'd still rather have my amp.

Oh, I'd rather have an amp as well! Those Clair 12's arw remarkably good with bass n druns though!

Weird to me the above idea of turning off a monitors tweeter or "not wanting to listen to your bass through something with a tweeter". I dont like bass cabs with tweeters either, but I listen to bass all the time on stereo's, in cars, headphones, etc...

The Tweeters in Claire or Meyers never sound out front to me. They are smooth as silk and blend with the remainder of the box in such a good way you forget they are there.. It just sounds natural and like the SOURCE...
Once you hear the Claire or Meyer you are spoiled for life...
Torture to me is coming home off of a long "A"tour after using Claire or Meyer monitors for months, and being on a local gig with a pair Yamaha squawk boxes beaming harsh tweets and mids at your head.

Depends what the signal is coming from. A mic on a bass cab? Sure, great. But then I don't really need the monitor anyway.

Anything else? Ugh. No thanks. Tweeter sounds like a tin can full of bees. This is specifically in reference to bass in the monitors, though.
