NAD! SVT7 Pro (also comparing it to my Streamliner 900)

I decided to open it up and take a look - Everything seems normal, I re-seated the tube and touched all the chips and cords to make sure they are plugged in properly.

Here I noticed that the 2 strips going into the 115/230V switcher feel a bit free and can be easily moved. Also the red and blue strips connect into the board with little plugs that are covered with plastic and also felt very free. Could this be the source of issue?

I'm testing this out for the last time and going to the store tomorrow. 30 minutes so far and no restarts/cutouts...

-EDIT: Disregard that, it just cut out again. OK, off to the store tomorrow...

I would like to update you guys about my cutting out Rev C00 7Pro.

After the amp was at the Israeli distributor's laboratory for 4 weeks, where they attempted to reproduce the issue to no avail, Ampeg told them to give me a new one. This is very surprising and highly unlikely for an Israeli customer to get such a service. I like Ampeg's style.

I just hope the new amp will work properly...

I think so too.

But that doesn't change the fact that my computer, my air conditioner and my MarkBass combo work just fine from the same socket.

I think Ampeg's engineers test their equipment in a laboratory but didn't really try testing it out in the real world where electricity sources aren't always regulated or perfect.

If your Markbass amp worked fine, then so should the Ampeg.

Great that they got you a new one. I hope its trouble free!

From what I have read on this forum I would have to agree. Stick to the gear you know will not fail you mid gig unexpectedly
It is an interesting topic.
It is not just the pro7 from ampeg that do this. The pf350 and 500 seem to have an overwhelming failure rate amongst forum members.
Either ampeg are riding on their name being used by greats when they were making great amps, and they know that people will buy the ampeg name blindly.
Or ampeg are just incompetent and don't know haw to make a reliable amp any more.
Probably a bit of both.

Ampeg is striving for a price point and it wouldn't suprise me that there could potentially be bumps in the road in regards to quality of components and failure rate. Ampeg is relying on their Asian suppliers to provide quality components at a certain price. I really don't think Ampeg would be OK with their supplier putting an inferior part with a high rate of failure in their amps.

Incompetent? Highly doubtful, but again they are marketing the PF-350 & PF-500 at a VERY low price point for it's wattage and set of features. A 500 watt amp for $399? The amps that the PF500 is compared to (GB, TC, Markbass) are all $150 to $300 more in price for similar wattage and features. Are corners being cut with the PF series? Probably. Is Ampeg making good when problems do pop up? It certainly seems it.

I've had no issues with my PF-500 or SVT-7PRO.

I've seen a couple on here. I also remember a time when people would complain about the Shuttles shutting down when pushed too hard due to a shutdown circuit. Don't know if that's still the case, and it doesn't distract from GB being a great company with killer dudes in charge, but any amps can break or shut down on you, even theirs ;)

Fair points. I wonder if going down the behringer route is going to be good for the ampeg name though.

I hear there's a Bugera (Behringer) SVT-CL copy for a fraction of the price and it's true to the original CL as it was made in the US 40 years ago.

Anyhow, so far so good. No cut-outs but with the first 7Pro I had it took 3 months for the cutting out to appear.
