NBD: Kiesel IC5 :-(

You did say it's a great bass for a slap style player.

Where you a hall monitor as a kid?
Did you apply to the FBI?

Did you send it back yet? Don't get tendonitis trying to play a bass, that doesn't make any sense.
Indeed.
Took me a few days of pain to trace it to the Icon. But alas, it is.
I checked the geometry differences between the Icon and the LB and while the total widthis the same, the appendage for the arm rest is moved forward on the Icon, causing strain on my elbow, shoulder, and wrist when seated, which is 95% of my playing.
Im on my way to FedEx now.
Kiesel emailed me a shipping label Only after I agreed in writing that this is not a return.
Very childish....or letigious.

I have still be refused any correspondance with Jeff even though I sent an email to him.

Because the ergonomics don't work for you, that's justification to return a bass that was listed as " no returns"? Ah, good luck with that argument. I'm not a Kiesel shill but I understand the concept of purchasing items that have a no return policy. You gambled, you lost.

I won't even attempt to address your claim how CS treated you because I wasn't privy to the phone calls or emails. Maybe your version is true, or not, I really don't know. I get it, you don't like the bass, you offered your opinion. Others don't share your opinion. Remember, if you want respect, you have to give it. Calling people shills seems fairly disrespectful. Lately speaking, Kiesel is living up to their end of the sale. They're offering to provide warranty work. Still failing to see the problem other then un happy customer. Hello? Have you met RIC Inc.?

Anyway, a pickup and/or preamp swap is the solution.

If the wood is the problem you can switch pickups until you die and the bass will still not sound good.

Also, lolz fun fact here: those pickups aren't the same size as anything else out there. Barts are somewhat close but would still need routing. But that's academic.

Here's the bottom line: the customer is not happy and Kiesel has no qualms whatsoever about sticking a customer with something they don't want. If I didn't know better and were in the market for one that would give me some serious, serious pause.

For example, big Rush fan. Always wanted a Ric. Started reading some of the posts here from and about Rickenbacker. Hoo boy. I might buy a used one if I could find it at a good price, but buy one new? They've reserved the right to give you warranty service if they feel like it, refuse if they feel like it. So, no new Ricky for me. Not for what they're asking!

Kiesel ain't Rickenbacker. They don't have decades of goodwill to burn, nor any "must have"' instruments like the 4003. If they continue dealing with customers like this, they won't have to worry about answering the phone much longer.

Eh, they are just seeing the bet you raised, by threatening a CC chargeback.

Sucks that you fundamentally dislike the Icon. For me, the Icon is just about perfect. It feels like home. But, every body is different!

The only way I could think to make it better would be a headless version. Not so much for looks, but for comfort. I was shocked at how much less tension I held in my fretting hand/arm/shoulder, when I played around with a Vader for a few days.

However, the Vader has an ergo issue similar to what I experience with my Fender Jaguar: Relatively sharp edges dig into my wrist. The Icon's round edges are lovely, in comparison. I think something with a large bevel, such as the Vanquish or Aries or Osiris or Zeus, would be good. But I haven't tried those yet.

You knowingly bought a non-refundable, non-returnable bass. You don't like it at all. The problems with the bass have jumped around from "it doesn't sound good" to "it gave me tendinitis." The bass is so bad that you believe it may be defective. In spite of this, you won't ship it back to Kiesel on their dime for them to determine if it's defective and repair it if it is.

Not really much else to unpack here, I don't think.

Kiesel's routes are tight. The routes are big enough for P2, but the standard clear coat adds too much thickness. I had to sand the finish from the inner edges of the routes, to get my Nordstrands to fit. Raw tone might be thin enough to allow them to fit without sanding. I dunno. Tung oil would be fine.

Got my new IC5 today.
I bought it from the Guitars-In-Stock selection.
SwampAsh, Walnut top, 5pc Walnut/Maple

I’ve been playing for just over 8hrs....can’t find one good sound.
I’ve adjusted the pickups to all extremes and then back to factory spec.

I believe the problem comes down to 2 elements:
1: StainlessSteel Frets
2: Pickups

On paper, stainless steel seems better. Eventually, frets wear out. But if we make frets harder, that must be better.
If you like pinging fret noise that is omnipresent even with the Treble lowered all the way, sure.
In all the hours of EQ’ing and pickup adjustment, the pinging only goes from worse to worser. No-treble dub was still plagued by the SS fret ping.

These pickups have the white dot.
So, KRH or RadHV?
The neck pickup sounds like a over-nasally bridge pickup and the bridge pickup is not musical at all.
The pickups do a great job at amplifying the SS fret ping.
They also introduce some odd harmonic overtones to everything. When I mute the note, that makes a loud overtone that makes the muting sound like a harmonic note if the midrange were turned up all the way.

Another oddity, it almost seems like the preamp is digital, or at least the pickup knob is.
When the pickup knob is at center detent and then adjusted ever so slightly in either direction, there is a cut-out that enters into a weird phase when going further towards either pickup.
Maxing either pickup and then rolling a little bit of the other pickup in also does this.
And the pickup knob in general is odd in that between full-on and center detent, it sounds like that pickup with just a little difference. What I mean is that the pickups dont play together to make unique tones. Basically its neck pickup, 50/50, and bridge pickup. Blending anywhere between detent and neck is just neck tone with more nasal. Bridge pickup rolling in more neck pickup is still just the nasal bridge sound but a little woofier/darker.

Does anybody have a bass with the white-dot Radiums that produces great tones?

Anyone else extremely disappointed in the SS frets?

I really wanted to like this bass and I regret giving Kiesel a chance, especially when they dont do 10-day return on an RTF, even if its a Showcase /G-I-S purchase and i never asked tgem to build it with RTF. I just assumed they wouldn’t make something this unmusical.
To me, thats a defect and ought to be remedied.
Why should a returning customer be punished for Kiesel trying to exhibit their options in available finishes.

I deeply regret not going with the NS Design CR5 or the Stingray 5 Special.
My Ibanez SR505 with non-USA MK1 Barts has better tones, and several of them, than this IC5.
I cant believe how different this experience is from my LB70p from 2000/2001. That bass was a dream and always created beaitiful experiences.
I have pointed a bunch of musicians towards Kiesel since my experience with my ‘01 LB70.
This, though. Im honestly deflated.
I have to wonder how this passes QC. Maybe there is no bassplayer who checks the basses to make sure they are musical to the ear and not just pretty to look at. Maybe this is what Kiesel believes is musical.

Sincerely,
Bunming hard with a $2,200 paper-weight.

Update:
I swapped strings from my Ibanesz, DR Hibeams.
They are darker than the Dunlops and give a better voice, but the tones are still unusable and the steel frets still plague me even with the trble tirned off and the high mids scooped all the way.
I am planning to order an LB75 in about 2 weeks. I am going on the quality I had in a B4 years ago. I do have the option of returning it in 10 days if I am not satisfied. I am sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with your order.I am hoping to have a good experience with my order. This is my last order I will put in for a bass. I plan on playing it for a few years then passing it down to my grandson who is just learning how to play. My Carvin B4 was a great bass. My grandson is using it now and he loves it. I hope I don't get taken with this purchase. I used lots of Carvin gear ovet the years such as amps and a pa. I never had a problem at all with them. I guess I'll know in January if I made a bad investment or not.

I find it interesting, yet also sad, to see how the Kiesel shills alter the narrative of this thread to be “its just that ge doesn't like the sound.”
If that were true, I wouldn not have made this thread and I would be able to fix the problem with a simple pickup swap.
I guess the tendonitis in my wrist and elbow from this bass are from the sound and not the horrible ergonomics.
I guess the sound of the bass is who hung up on me when I called customer service.
I guess the sound is what keeps this bass from achieving 2mm action without buzz.
Or maybe shills can’t read and just junp to a conclussion after scanning a few sentences.

Arbiterusa touches on an excellent point of bad construction materials that Kiesel selects. They sure look pretty, but the sound like crap.

As to everyone critisizing me for purchasing a no-return intrument....Kiesel does have a guarantee of quality and this is where the issue lies.
Well if I had any respect for you before, it's all gone. First you tell us the 2200 dollar bass is bad. A bunch of people offer help or ideas, you dismiss every single one of them as you have tried them all. You are offered a fix or repair from Kiesel, you refuse. You argue that they should give you your money back. They refuse. They explained their position adnoseum. You threatened to have your credit card payment pulled. Then, you insult everyone who likes Kiesel basses by calling us "shrills". I don't even know what a "shrill" is. As far as I can tell, you still haven't sent it back for a free assessment or repair! It's clear to me sir, and probably everyone else on TB, you're looking for sympathy and needing everyone to agree with you that you were ripped off when, in fact, you are whining about spending too much money on a bass that isn't good enough for your wprshipfulness. It's really too bad you had to resort to insults when you didn't get your way.
Since you obviously don't like it and refuse a free repair or assessment, you can donate it to any number of charities who could certainly use the money they could get for it.
I bet there are plenty of councilors who specialize in "buyers remorse". Maybe even a website or two.
Have a wonderful day with your new paperweight.

I had thought that the op had taken his ball and gone home, but it appears he sent the bass back now. As ugly as this thread has gotten, I'm still curious how it turns out, although I doubt that he's ever going to be 100% happy with the instrument after this ordeal.

It seems like op is the kind of person who uses a lot of expired coupons.

You misread.
They offered a fix, I said yes, was transfered then told no.
So I accepted the warranty check-up and once i said yes, they hung up on me.
No contact back for a week til I emailed them a third time again and finally they said they would provide a shipping label only on the condition that I accept the delivery when they send it back to me. And that they would not accept me sending it to them one-way even on my dime.
So no, I never once refused anything from kiesel, even the free repair you me tion, though they never offered that - they only offered to look at it under warranty; that is different than them offering a repair ;-)

And a shill is a person who speaks on behalf of an entity they are not part of though defendig the entity as though they have interest in that entity.
I see it a lot with other breeders in the cannabis industry. There are many people who hype up a certain breeder and jump on anyone who attacks their affiliate breeder. This affiliation can be official but often it is just a fan-boy situation taken to the next level in social media, like a troll who is benevolent to those who get in line and wrathful to those opposing or those speaking freely.
I only mention shill after 12 pages of certain members trying to reconstruct the narrative through over simplification. Most people who disagree with me have made one or two posts and moved on. But there are a few who keep coming back to either refute or dismiss any new information I post, every time. Like they have a need (or incentive) to alter the direction of this thread to ensure anyone who reads it will dismiss my points and still be interested in purchasing a Kiesel.
I see it all the time on cannabis forums, beig that there is so much money involved. A pack of seeds is a few hundred dollars. A bass/guitar can be a few thousand dollars. To think that this forum is void of any members working either freely or with incentive to support some entities and protect them from devaluation is naive. Prolly 95-98% of us are just passionate musicians trying to learn from and teach each other and come together in community.

Dude, I really do feel for you and I really do think that 20% of this forum needs reading comprehension courses. It's also sad how TB can be such a great resource while also being a place where sad people just want to bust a strangers balls for sport so they can feel better about their day. They need to take that stuff to facebook where it belongs.
Yea, the bass had no return policy... but most people would assume that's in regards to wishy-washy buyers or indecisive people.... you wouldnt think that its a policy that would let the company tell you to pound sand after they send you a bogus bass. You arent alleging that you dont care for the bass, youre saying that its not right...that its defective. That it doesnt perform anywhere near the realm of acceptable. Its not like you bought this thing and then decided that you prefer the sound of a P bass.
And yes, I do believe you that the bass is greatly underwhelming. Ive had the same experience with their instruments that I have seen in the wild and you seem to be well spoken and thorough in your thoughts. You dont strike me as that 2% of buyers that are just insane and unreasonable. You put faith in their company and you backed that faith with your hard earned cash, and they havent been helpful.

ok but are you coming to the meeting? .
I personally would love to see the Carvin shills and the Ric apologists engaged in combat with each other. Could be a Netflix original.

I do basically enjoy all the radiused humbucker tones out of my passive VB5 but I have a similar issue with the pickup blend pot.
It basically operates as a pickup selector switch for me, i literally cannot tell the difference between fully neck pickup and halfway between neck and detente, for example. as soon as you hit the detente, the sound changes dramatically. Also there is a tiny bit of scratchy noise just as the knob gets to the detente. It's nothing major, but its noticeable.
