Never ceases to amaze me...

I joined TB to...

I saw the thread that, I assume, prompted you to post this. Honestly, I thought those that corrected you were fairly kind.
It wasn't just that post, or "me", I've been here a while and see it happen all too often...Matter of perception, however I did concede and acknowledge the "correct" answer, and it apparently wasn't good enough, but like everyone else here says, it is what it is...Rock on Guy.

I am amazed at how with such great speed, and with such gusto, other brothers and sisters of the bottom end, will challenge you, argue with you, state "facts", whether true or not, when you reply to a question or a post. Hell, most of the time the OP is asking a specific question such as " I am interested in amp A and B, does anyone have experience with either?" And then you see posts like "what strings are you using", "are your pickups at the correct height"...I mean really people, we are all passionate about playing, about gear and we all love to talk about it sharing knowledge or a story or just an opinion, me included, but I gotta tell ya we all need to keep it in check. I'm just saying....

BTW - I am prepared for the slams, the slurs, the jabs...all of it, I just had to put this out there. Rock on fellow bottom bringers.

I initially joined to learn. I didnt know nearly as much as I needed/wanted to before I joined. I had amp issues (come to find out it wasn't even amp issues!! It was just a bad instrument cable haha ;)) so I made an account to ask some people some questions. I even got an attitude with some in my very first thread! I wasn't used to or prepared for the ways of some on here. I actually just re-read that thread a couple weeks ago. The nerve of me haha I have learned A TON of useful things since I've joined. I've gained knowledge and experience that most couldn't gain in a whole bass playing career because of TB. Not tooting my own horn, it's just that I have learned so much here from some really great people and I am forever grateful for that. I've also got caught up in the drama and general kaka myself in the past. I've lost my temper here, fed the trolls, made an a$$ of myself and so on. But I also feel like I've helped to contribute as well even if it was of the smallest fraction.

So I did choose I joined here to learn. But over time, I would have to say I'm in the "Be with like minded people who share the same passion" I've come to find that these days I usually post about gear that excites and inspires me and try to share that with others. I still contribute where and when I can, I get PMs from time to time about pedals or the like, but overall, it's kind of a place for me and my buddies to geek on gear. I've have actually met and became pretty close friends with a small handful of guys on here and we talk more off TB via personal texts and emails. Overall it's been a great experience. I've also met some of the biggest A holes I've ever "met" here but they are more far and few in between. There are still times I let them get to me too. But overall, I like TB a lot. It's really bumped my playing and all around gear knowledge to a place I wouldn't even have come close to otherwise. Ever since I joined, I play almost every day now. I am a better bassist and musician because of joining TB. I'll take it! :)

Welcome to the free internet fourms.

a place were validation is constantly confused with information.

Don't like an answer to your question? No prob just keep reading, someone will surely commiserate within a page or two

It's the interwebs, it's what we do.
Certainly, its called "conformational" bias" and we all look for one at some time, the same way conservatives watch Fox News and others watch the fake news channels, we all seek like minded people, its natural to gravitate towards them, there is however a way to constructively get your opposing view across without leaving flame and ashes in your wake...I'm just saying. Rock on 555.

Years ago I got stoned and passed out on a very fast train…

Many hours later, I was roused from a dream by some indecipherable babbling. Some scowling foreigner in a shabby blue uniform was tickling me in the ribs with a mop-handle, hell bent apparently on herding me off the train and into the darkness.

I have no idea where I've ended up. Nothing seems familiar - by a railway-siding somewhere I think, at the end of the line, I guess. I've entered a huge maze or an impenetrable jungle of some kind. There's a yellow brick road winding away forever. Many twists and turns. Burritos grow on trees. Lemonade springs. There's always music, always dancing. I'm lost but it's kinda fun. I can hear what sounds like laughter, a babbling brook, just around the next corner :)

Beef, or chicken burritos?

What really gets me is when I state an opinion, i.e. "I don't like this bass because..." or "In my experience, it happens this way because..." (just as vague general examples) and people try to argue objectively. There are people on this site who literally do not understand the difference between facts and opinions.

A few things...

I think you are refering to "confirmation bias", the elephant graveyard of fact and reason.

As for "confrontation bias", I used to believe mankind was hardwired to be biased against confrontation, that our ability to reason granted us the gift of cooperation and this was our prime directive, but i no longer hold that opinion. If anything, we are now being conditioned almost from birth to fear anyone not of our tribe, and to confront them with their failings and prejudices as validation for our own failings and prejudices. Rather than seeking common ground, we now strive for bright lines of demarkation. Every day brings us one step closer to that ideal so many parents drill into the young and impressionable minds they have been tasked with shaping; "don't color outside the lines."

It's all entertainment so it's all fake. Unfortunately a lot of my fellow travlers mistake it for news.

Seeking like minded people because there is truth in popularity is how we arrive at conclusions like the earth is flat and sits at the center of the universe.

The answer you were given wasn't "correct", it was correct. The parenthese tell a lot there....

Dude, just buy a mesa D800 and all your problems are solved! /s

If you guys think this forum is bad, how many of you remember Usenet forums?:D

Russ

Yes to USENET, and the .rec zone was a minefield LOL.

As a matter of perspective, I am also active on another forum that is a heavily female as TB is male. The rules for posts over there are codified as KNIT:

"Before you hit the "Submit" button, review what you're about to say.
  • Is it Kind?
  • Is it Necessary?
  • Is it Informative?
  • Is it True?"
The mods over there swing a mean ban hammer, and use it too. A first infraction for rudeness results in a three month probation period. Posters can be banned from even reading threads after warnings to desist from posting afoul of the mods. As a result, posters over there tend to be very polite with each other. That does not mean there aren't quarrels between posters. But they're civil quarrels.

And so my surprise in what is said here, even with the understanding the Ignore button is a the first line of defense. The "ignore strategy" does not mitigate damage done, though.

That all said, a multiple answer format to the OP's survey would be fine. I'm here because I'm a bass player, I like to learn, I enjoy making friends and find TB a place I like to hang out.

Damn spell check! Duly noted and edited to correctness ;-)

Sounds lovely.
