I think the ratio of cool:jerk is pretty good here compared to the rest of the internet. Just like anywhere else on the digiwebs: ignore the trolls and numnuts, and try not to let negative encounters sour the experience or drive you away.
of all the other social media platforms I participate in, TB is far and away the best environment in terms of generally positive conversations and a minimum amount of trolling. I think this reflects bass players general mellow approach to life. I mean, really, have you ever run across a high-strung, obnoxious, or narcissistic bass player?
I think any thread will tend to veer off the original topic over time--just like any face-to-face conversation.

Some dudes just love to argue or take a difference of opinion as seriously as an insult to their god or something. Grown men can be very sensitive. Pathetic but what can you do? It is what it is *shrug*

That was probably because one of the rules on the classified board is it isn't to be used for discussions. The powers that be have asked comments there be kept to a minimum.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should members disrupt sellers' threads by posting challenging, derogatory posts, or in fact post anything that is not either directly related to purchasing the item advertised or at the very least specifically complimentary, to the seller or the item being sold. To do otherwise is to risk a trolling infraction.

If I have a question on a classified ad item because I am seriously considering a purchase, I just PM the seller.
If it's more a "seeking general recommendations" sort of thing about something I found in the classifieds, I'll start a new thread like I did when I was shopping for a phase shifter

It does. But it's also only one way of developing a respectful community.
A tech forum I used to heavily participate in always amazed me with its civility and high ratio of signal to noise - and the admins and mods ran it with a touch so light it was invisible 99.999% of the time. One mod even lost his moderator authority for being a little too quick on the trigger locking out a thread. (The membership there was definitely of the "I'll fight to the death against what you're saying - but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" school of debate.)
Bottom line, you get the community (or forum) you create. Not the one you ask for. Parking ego at the door, and giving somebody's comments the benefit of doubt they're well intentioned goes a long way towards creating a civil forum for discussion and debate. And one that requires minimal intervention or corrective actions.
I got so angry for not understanding the question that I fired the drummer.
I delete more comments than I post. Someone asks about 8x10 cabs, and I feel the need to respond, before remembering I've never owned one before, and probably have nothing useful to say.

I joined back in college because I was a lurker for a while and the more I read, the more questions I started to come up with. Once I joined, I stayed because of all the positive feedback I got, and I usually got any questions or issues resolved quickly. As the years went on, I saw more and more negativity/opinionated posts/etc, but that comes with every forum you join on the internet. To this day, every time I post a question or ask for opinions, I get well rounded results and it's one of the reasons why I love this site.
I've nought basses based off of recommendation on here, figured out how to repaint my bass, got information on how to rewire one of my basses, got insight on various pedals I've bought/looked into, got feed back on how to string my certain pedal chain... the list goes on and on. It's like having a bunch of brothers and sisters you never knew you had give you advice!

There are so many forums that have I have drafts saved on lol, so many times I start typing without knowing what I'm talking about or start rambling about things people would never care about, then realize what I'm doing and close out of the thread haha
I tend to bring my most valuable comments when I've drank way too much.
