Some would say I put the ass in bass player.
This place, for the most part, rocks - even though most of you are always wrong.
I come here mainly because there is a lot to learn---what better way to research new gear than to talk to the people actually using it. I also find the music theory debates enlightening--sometimes one of you will post something that makes me look at a progression from a completely different perspective.

I hear what you're saying, and can agree with some of where you're coming from. But I think you might be misunderstanding how an open forum works in the less than ideal "real world."
When you post on an internet forum such as this one, the topic is yours to choose, but it then becomes anybody else who participates to discuss. You don't get to take ownership of a thread once it's posted. Nobody gets paid to consult around here. So they're free to take any question anywhere they want.
You have the option of ignoring anything you don't care to read; or disregard any question you don't want to answer. As does everybody else who participates.
Many times what you may think of as a 'challenge' is merely somebody trying to get additional details, or clarify something, that they feel may be relevant in order to answer your question to the best of their ability. If entering into that sort of dialog isn't your thing, then a forum such as this one probably isn't something you want to do.
Best ask your question and roll with where it goes. If it strays to far OT from what you're looking for, you can always (politely) suggest people are getting away from your specific question. And then ask it again.
You also need to be a little open minded when it comes to hearing what people have to say. If your question is so specific that you only want an A or B recommendation from somebody who owned and played through two specific amps, odds are pretty good you'll get few if any answers. Because the likelihood of somebody having owned and played both the exact two models you're asking about is pretty small. You might only get one answer. Or none.
Being a little less confrontational ("Never ceases to amaze me...") and a little less defensive ("I am prepared for the slams, the slurs, the jabs...all of it...") might also go a small way towards keeping the open dialog flowing.
To paraphrase St. Mick: "I know...it's only TalkBass...but I like it." And as you yourself said: "Rock on..."
Hang in there and try not to let the place get to you. It is what it is.
P.S. I see myself as a perpetual student, or "lifelong learner" to use the colloquial expression. I joined TB primarily to learn, and share what I've learned second.
I agree with a lot of this. I've had a much different experience than the OP. I don't think that 95% of us were the fat kid with glasses that were picked on in high school. I think that 95% of us are pretty solid people who like to play (and talk about) bass.
Perhaps it's expectations. If I start a thread, and I get (what seems to me) incomplete answers, I ask that poster for more detail. If someone suggests something that seems out of the box to me, I look at it and try to see if it applies to what I'm doing. Sometimes a different viewpoint is refreshing. If it doesn't apply, then I just move on.
I'm not here to argue. I'm not here to be right or wrong. I'm here for the discussions and to learn. If someone asks for an opinion, I may give one. If someone asks for some experience, if I have them, I'll share them. I like to find out what's better for person A, better for person B, and better for person C...and then I determine what's best for me.
I'm sure someone has already chimed in on this point, but in the off chance the 7 pages of replies did NOT...
Speaking for myself, there are plenty of situations where I could have resolved an issue with something much cheaper and simpler than what I intentionally had in mind. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, a lot of people who do that are just trying to help and offering some lower-cost solutions to try before resorting to a purchase that is several hundred dollars. I've saved myself tons of money by doing a simple string change or adjusting pickups, so it's not a BS reply to suggest that before selling a bass or dropping $1k on an amp only to have the same problem as before.
I'd also add that with the obnoxiously rich resource of Youtube videos and gear demos, people would likely come to Talkbass only when they have a problem or a super specific question. If you want to know what an Ampeg SVT sounds like with a Fender jazz, go look up a video. They almost deserve a dismissive answer if they are too lazy to go do that.

Hey, I still am the fat kid that gets picked on after 'bringing the thunder' for 45 years. But you are right. A lot claim to be an expert and over complicates things. Some of the reason I love playing bass is most band members resolve back to me. Just lucky with good timing and I practice really hard songs and jam in bands to easy ones so I can sit back relax and listen to the music without thinking about what I am doing to much.
Now this works for me and me alone. I don't endorse it to other players with experience but if you can see a different approach in what I do that is interesting then great. I look to other players here and do the same. Take the advice or experience that they have and see if it could apply to me.
I don't judge as I really have been judged harshly my whole life (I am ugly, on the outside only though). I am thankful that Talk Bass exists and I stumbled across it.

Well that's because when it comes to sound a lot has to do with it !
Not just type of amp(A or B) /speakers/ even the bass!
Yes, the type of strings/ tunings/ set up etc. All impact the sound of your instrument ! Just saying..
I came here initially because it was a long time ago and there were so few resources for bass players to exchange information. That was early 2000's, I've changed my handle twice since then. I actually stopped coming when I had a full time job (which I still have) and a three night gig every week for 3 years. I was just too doggone beat to do it all, plus have a family life.
Now the gigs are less, and I do wine tastings and special events. They pay well and are fun, and civilized. I do miss the occasional bottle chucked at me because I won't play Freebird ha ha. It's hard to beat a club that's too hot temperature wise, everyone's dancing and the air is ELECTRIC with energy.
As far as here goes, there are some super kind people that I wish I could have a cup of coffee with one day, or have a GTG with. I have noticed a group of regulars that no matter WHAT TOPIC they will argue and are passive aggressive. Many are sarcastic and zinger types. A couple times I got into zinging wars a long time ago but I've recognized the troublemakers. Some have been blocked that are toxic and some I just go meh... consider the source.
Since I've been on TB, I've learned how to service my own bass well, I'm familiar with the latest happenings in the bass world, latest gear, latest comings and goings and passings. I've learned a lot of us old timers have the same fond memories. I've also learned a lot of the young timers take their music seriously and are pretty danged good! I've learned about equipment and have actually owned some boo-teek gear a couple times. I've learned the meaning of GAS and yes I've got it now too ha ha.
Long live TB and brother bass players!

Yep thats all it takes to get in, our leader Tbird 1958 will immediately shoot you a number and an initiation ceremony ritual that is optional given the number of guests that can make it and the geographical location of course

I agree I have run across that myself, but I haven't the time to get into useless responses. I try to help if I can, but most of the time I lurk and wait for someone else to post the same answer I would have. If that doesn't happen, I will, if I have an answer or suggestion that maybe helpful I will post.
Also the ones in the know lets say here on TB are the ones that are helping people solve their issues these Avatars pop up often, so they are kind of the go to group I have taken the advise from in the past. so no really do you have any dogs?
