New Carvin P bass, about time?

I think that's the new model Jeff Kiesel has been teasing on his Facebook page lately. I think it's a 34" scale, 24 fret neckthrough model, with a split p style and humbucking soapbar, with no pickguard apparently geared specifically towards hard rock and metal players. Carvin was taking some informal polls on their FB page about what pickups people prefer for those styles and he's been tossing out pics here and there.

One of my bands started using a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] last night which allowed us to record the rehearsal and gave me a chance to listen to my PBJ in a recorded band mix and I'm digging it even more today. That P pickup tracks really well and full sounding.

The PB is slowly becoming my goto bass and my SB is getting jealous of the time we're spending together :)

For a few years I have been a big Carvin fan and have lurked TB. When I saw this bass on their site I immediately found this thread, read the whole thing, then joined TB. When the PB kit comes out I will be ordering it. GAS'd.

Here's a vid from the Carvin Facebook page. You can just briefly see the new prototype bass with a P in the neck, this one looks like a soapbar in the bridge. It's not the one the demo guy is playing. Near the end of the vid, Kiesel gets the prototype off the wall, and you can barely make out a few words he says about it. Then the cameraman gets this stupid idea that he's going to wander over to the other side of the wall and try to get on his tiptoes and peek over in a couple of different spots. Stupid idea lol.

FWIW, Carvin's new soft case is absolutely fantastic!

It will save a few bucks on your new bass build and chances are good that most Carvin fans will already have at least one of the formerly-obligatory hard cases laying around the house.

Straight from Jeff Kiesel via Fb (honest injun): there are no plans to offer the SCP on the B series, period. The B50 with the SCP on it that made Carvin's Fb page was a prototype.

Gotta say, though: that Jeff responded to a comment of mine himself the day after NAMM, then responded to a Fb message of mine thanking him for the info ... makes me want to order a PB4 from Carvin just on principle, 20 frets or no.

I had the same experience contacting Jeff via his Facebook page and his reply to me was almost instantaneous.

Build and buy with confidence, the PB4 is a winner and in worst case, is returnable within 10 days. :D

Yeah, there is a full video about it on their Facebook page. Not sure I know how to link to it. But, anyway, it interests me since I like neck through and have been wanting a PJ for a while, now. I'm not a Metal or hard Rock guy, but I think with a nice wood top it would not really look all that "Metal" and might suit me pretty well.

Cool, I'll have to look for that vid on FB. Yeah, if done in nice wood it doesn't have to look metal. Wonder what other bridge PU options there are besides soapbar?

Hmm, interesting. He doesn't mention any bridge pickup options other than the new humbucker that they designed specifically for this new bass. Also curious about headstock options. Anyway, I know this is off topic in a PB thread, but this bass has been talked about a bit, and does have the P pickup and no pickguard, which some people have mentioned desiring, so here's the video. Not sure if you have to be logged in to Facebook to see it or not:

Well, that rock/metal P/J prototype has a few undesirable traits to me, anyway:

- No arm bevel in the body (and fairly sharp body edges, period. That's definitely "metal" ... but this bass, ergonomically, isn't going to please the high-wearin' type like me)
- beveled horn cutouts (again: very "metal")
- Neck-thru design will make headstock design options limited
- 34" scale (for the 5-string)
- Up-in-the-air finish options
- Where's the four banger?!?!

That bridge 'bucker-in-the-soapbar is intriguing, though. I do want a fairly "hot" and aggressive bass (thinking about a P/HB config for a PB, if I can convince Carvin to do a coil tap for the HB), but ...
