New Carvin Vanquish Basses

I'm sure an SB6000 would sell like crazy...it has been and still is an incredible series. I just think having something different is good. A little different shape, the bevel top...just a different look.

You can request a lighter wood or lighter piece of the wood you want. Depending on how light you want it and if a piece is available that weight. As for pricing, they are under bolt neck basses at Carvin.com.

Not to mention the fatal flaw of all these demo videos -- the sound of a bass by itself is irrelevant unless you're a solo artist. Plenty of basses sound great by themselves and get swallowed up in a full band mix.

After playing for a while, IME, you can tell whether or not a specific tone is gonna cut in a mix. There still may need to be some tweaking at the amp or board once it's brought into the mix, but you can often tell if something coming out of the speakers is going to be a good base before playing with other instruments. To my ears, the Vanquished would have no problem cutting through the average mix. Now from what I heard of the Xcellerator, it sounds like it's gonna need some doctoring at the amp to get it to cut, especially since it seemed to be lacking a lot of that 2k gank in the demos that sounds ugly by itself but is actually needed to have definition in a mix. But I take the JimmyM philosophy: Sometimes you have to turn some knobs to get a good bass sound.

I'd love the same looks but much simpler wood. All those crasy tropical woods don't tick my box...
They'll pretty much do whatever you want. You could probably have them whip one up with Alder and Ash or flamed maple and custom color it or even do a solid finish. I will get the chance to check one of these out in a month or so-can't wait!

The Vanquish is very intriguing and fills a much needed gap...

I've been primarily interested in a 6 string "jazz style" bass with fairly specific stats:
  • 19mm string spacing,
  • a maple board,
  • 34" scale,
  • single coil pickups,
  • passive tone control,
  • lightweight,
  • no breakage of the bank.

This carvin seems to cover all of these. My only concern at this point is weight. I'd love to get one if I knew the weight would be under 9lbs - but I don't know how realistic that is.

According to the specs on the Carvin site, the spacing on the 6 strings (as it is on all other Carvins) is 16.25mm, not 19mm...

I have always been intrigued with Carvin basses, but have been reluctant to pull the trigger. Ben Jones demo of the Vanquish has my attention big time!!!! He is killing that bass!!! I disagree about the single coil sounding better than the humbuckers. As I am leaning heavily towards getting one, my choice would include:
-5 string
-Ebony fret board
-Walnut body
-Maple neck
-Black hardware
-Pearl dot inlays
-Satin matt finish on neck and body
-RADHV pickups

Carvin has hit another home run and the bass world needs to take notice!

A Groove is a Terrible Thing to Waste!

Here's the one the folks at Carvin sent me to check out. Pretty conservative as these go-one piece swamp ash body with traditional sunburst, rosewood board, one piece maple neck.
Controls are volume/pan/passive tone control with active bypass/stacked bass and treble EQ. Pickups are radiused humbuckers. The electronics really remind me of the SB series basses-perhaps the best description of the tone of this bass might be "Fender-like" for some reason. I will take it on a Jazz gig tonight and see how we get along. So far, I've not had a whole lot of time to check it out. I hope to get some video up pretty soon as well.
I'm studying it with the eye to making a "Signature Bass" with a couple of personal modifications that will hopefully show up in a later production model. For now, I'm just taking some time to get to know this new instrument. Stay tuned....

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on it. This model has really caught my eye.
