New Darkglass Compressor: The Hyper Luminal Hybrid Compressor

I'm in for a wait with a preorder. I've tried other comps of interest so I'm back on the fence about the Hyper Luminal. From the clips it sounds like it might be redundant with the digital comps in my Helix LT. Are there any ears experienced with digital modeling using the Hyper Luminal? If so, how accurate is the modeling and is it natural/organic? Also, there is lack of specs or PS compatibility info and I don't want to have to order then turn around and send it right back in for a mod. Does the PS issue affect digital modeling units power requirements as well? TIA

Where are you based from? If you're waiting for a pre-order you will probably get the revised version (compatible with everything rated for 200mA ou higher output current).

The modeling feels, in my opinion, remarkably natural as we're only modeling the part that controls the VCA, so the main aspect to nail perfectly was the response accuracy (that our sidechain model behaves just like the real thing).

The analog VCA definately helps with keeping the feel natural as there are no codecs in the signal path adding latency and noise.

By all means let us know your thoughts once you get yours.

definitely agree with you in your review that the bus mode just sounds "really really good". definitely noticed how thick and full it sounded while retaining clarity. BUS with the 3rd light (4:1 i think) is my jam.

I’m using a voodoo labs PP2+ and I noticed that sometimes when I power on my pedals after a while, the Hyper Luminal would cause the signal to be extremely low volume and distorted and no sound if bypassed.

Only when I disconnect the 9V plug from the pedal and then plug it in again the signal would become normal. It’s happened more than once now.

It’s good to know it works if I do this but a nuisance if I have to disconnect and reconnect every time. Anyone else notice anything like this? @Darkglass ?

Hey man. Yes, we’ve had reports of this happening with older Voodoo Labs (we own a newer model that worked just fine with all of our testing).

But we’ve found a good solution for this.

Simply email us to [email protected] with your location and serial number and we’ll take care of the rest, we’ll also send a small gift for your troubles.

I’m sorry for any inconvenience, but we’ll have you running in no time.

Seems an interesting new compressor. And you can’t ever have too many choices when it comes to those.

Nice looks. And what reviews I’ve heard sounded good.

I’m not worried about the touch sensors. They’re reliable. And I don’t need to guess about their reliability. Component manufacturers test for and publish the MTBF specs. They wouldn’t be able to sell their products otherwise. Electronics are a highly competitive market. Reliability is a major selling point.

About the only thing I see missing is top jacks. Why companies keep doing side jacks on high end pedals is a mystery to me.
