New DR neon strings

Not really, because it's incorrect info! All the ExtraLife's and Neons are coated nickel. I'm guessing that's why Dragon Skin's are not part of the ExtraLife line...they are stainless steel.

The original DR colored strings were stainless steel (including the original Red Devils). I may still have a Black Beauties box from 4-5 years ago to prove it. Their change to a new coating seemed to have also brought the change to using nickel strings, if you are to believe their current literature. Though oddly, as mentioned, the Black Beauties seem to still be available in gauges that the nickel Sunbeams are not (but steel Hi-Beams are).

I did notice that the black beauties have a heavy option 50-110 as well, but I do know of DR to occasionally do runs of non-standard gauges for artists etc... But they are usually in large quantities which would explain the heavy black beauties...

then again, it could be that the heavy gauge black beauties are a different underlaying string... who knows..

I just got a set of green Neons (I LOVE the Fat Beams, but I figured since I have the DR endorsement, I'll give a few different sets a try). I'll be replacing my 10 month old, been-through-a-tour-gigs-and-countless-rehearsals Fat Beams (which still sound pretty amazing!), and hear how it sounds. I'll be stringing up The Monster and giving the strings a whirl tomorrow. Will post my impressions and pics.

Cheers!

Got the Neons on and there's a noticeable difference between them and the old Fat Beams I had on the Monster. I'm guessing the new vs old and well gigged strings is responsible for most of that difference. The Neons are brighter, and sort of "twangy". I like them. I'd really like to A/B them with a fresh set of Fat Beams, though.

The feel is very similar to the Fat Beams. Both being wound on round cores gives them a nice low tension, and make the very comfortable to play. The coating on the Neons makes them feel smoother than the Fat Beams, but I never had an issue with the Fat Beams in that regard. they feel very smooth to me.

The true test will be tomorrow at rehearsal with the band.

They look pretty damned cool! :D Here are a couple of pictures. Please excuse the dirtiness of The Monster, heheheh... ;)

Here are some black light pics with my cheap 4 buck bulb. There is only fret wear on the strings that you would get with any other strings and they still look great even though they are ancient! The colors got pretty washed out in the upload and I dont know how to fix it

Here's my ever so beloved Lakland 44-02. It's got an alder body, and I have noticed that with the combination of that wood and these strings, I seriously have to scoop out some mids, but my Walkabout is good at that.

Honestly all of the people scoffing at the blasphemous concept of colored strings and preaching about TONE are being bigoted and ignorant. I mean it's not like they bothered to try them! :rollno: How would you know that something is that BAD if you haven't tried them! To me they're a more mid-punchy and slightly less bright pair of sunbeams that last 3 times as long. (which makes the $30 dollar price tag totally worth it) When using the neck PU and the neck side of the humbucker I get a Gibson Ripper-esque tone, and it is so unbelievably punchy, especially with a thick pick. And it has a slap tone that you have to hear to believe.

With the lowered price tag I think that they are even more amazing. I have had multiple sets, and the only one problem that I had ever was I had to G strings and no D string. Emailed DR and they immediately sent out a new D string, no questions asked. They have a fantastic customer service, and I have used DR Strings for several years, and have only had to contact them once.

When I first got it I had a tortoiseshell pickguard, which I didn't particularly like when I got it in the first place. I decided that I wanted a new one so I thought, "What the hell, why don't I sand it".

It was a 4 ply pickguard, White/Black/White/Tortoiseshell. I planned on sanding down to the black to get a striking look out of it. took a couple of days and a ton of arm strength, but it turned out that under that the base layer of the tortoiseshell was that bright yellow, and on top of it was variations and blends between a red-orange and clear plastic. I had to be careful to not sand it too much or it'd disappear.

Also, here's a link to my youtube covers and my favorite cover and best quality one. It's a great example of the strings, I managed to get the mic at a good angle. If you want, feel free to give any technique suggestions, I've been teaching myself bass since I was 12, and I think free advice is great. (another thing that makes this a great site)

I'm liking the way they look on my light colored warlock better in dim lighting conditions, with some ambeint blacklighting. LOl. The blacklighted yellow neons are allmost the same greenish color as my fretboard and knob position dots btw, rather then yellow under blacklight. Currently got green neons on.

I recently put a set of Neon Orange on my Franken P-bass. I liked them so much I ordered aset of Neon Green one's for my White Peavey Foundation S for our St Patty's weekend gigs. They looked great! I really think they sound great too. Definately a little less bright than a new string, more like a set that has been played in a little.

I only use DR Strings anymore, Nickle Lo-Riders on my 5 string, and I won't be switching anytime soon!

I have now played a lot of rehearsals and gigs with the green Neons, and they've become my number 1, go to, strings. I LOOOOOVE the tone and feel of these things! They look awesome, and people are constantly coming up and asking me about them while complimenting my sound. Keepers for sure!

Cheers!
