New Origin Effects DCX Bass

299 posts into the thread an oddball walks in with the sort of question that says, they ain't from around here.

Say, has anyone tried the SV and or DCX to overdrive to add some warm dirt to an old-fashioned SVT with no gain control from the last century, without running it hard enough to make you puke, to use a #JimmyM expression?
Origin Effects makes exceptional gear. All SVT's are not equal. Therefore, YMMV.

If you haven't or don't know... Huh?

I'll rephrase: Has anyone used the OE SV and or DCX for the purpose of overdriving an Ampeg SVT tube amp (50th Anniversary, VR, II np, Skunkworks, MTI era, "black line", "curved line", or "blue line") to the edge of breakup to add some warm dirt to the tone at moderate volumes?

Well said.

Jimmy may well be the best person to take swing at that. The DCX is something that you should get your hands on and take it for a spin. See what you can do with it with your specific situation.

I have a DCX coming tomorrow to try versus and with an OE SV and Ampeg SGT-DI. I'm trying OE Cali76 CB in front of these and alternatively after/behind.

I understand Jimmy has used pedals from the Tech 21 VT line for many years and prefers them. I've tried/used these but they don't do what I want. I'm not seeking the overtly aggressive overdriven SVT sound. I prefer subtly in the zone between clean and dirty, the edge of breakup.

That will be a good time! :woot:

It sounds like your looking for a bit of steak sauce and not a pile of onions and mushrooms on that ground round! :bassist:

having two would be very nice. i use my Halcyon for the drive and my DCX for the clean (EQ), but lately, i'm just using the DCX by itself for a slightly driven sound always on and my empress MKII bass comp for compression

Was really debating adding another DCX just for the drive, but not ready to spend a lot right now. I got a deal on a JPTRx Jive and I’m going to see how that sounds running into it.

Just ordered mine…Was going to buy a used Spaceman Equinox for almost the exact same sum. I remain unsure about the Equinox. There is a veritable plethora of them on the Verb, yet there was limited production- something like 222 of them made. They seem to languish on the used market. I wanted one to accompany my incoming Meridian they’re putting out, for aesthetic purposes as much as anything, I suppose. I think I may have made a better choice here. You enablers seem to love the DCX…

I've had a DCX Bass for a few days now--even had a chance to play it live over the weekend--and, wow, I think Origin Effects absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one. I bought it to use as an overdrive so I was expecting to stay on the OD mode, but so far I prefer the EQ mode with the gain around 2 o'clock and voice on "medium." That gives me plenty of mild drive and keeps the adaptive voicing engaged. I'm still in the honeymoon phase, of course, but if you were to ask me right now I'd say the DCX Bass is in my top 5 overdrives of all time. I've owned a good number of boutique overdrives so that's saying something.

I'm still waiting for the DCX that I ordered last week to try with the BassRig SV and for a side-by-side comparison ODing my amp. I thought I'd have it days ago by now, but nope.

I like SV > Cali76 > amp more than Cali76 > SV > amp. Now I just want to find out if I want to add the DCX to that combination or replace the SV with the DCX instead.

//USPS malfunctioned, picking up my DCX order from the retailer in O.C. CA, sent it to their L.A. sorting/distribution center then for whatever cockamamy reason sent it back to O.C. where the retailer is. How or why that happens I don't know. It just seems idiotic.

I'm sorry about that. It's frustrating when that happens, and it has indeed happened to me. I think packages get missorted from time to time. It will get to you (eventually). And it's worth the wait :)

BTW, About that, I find putting Cali76 comp in front of BassRig SV makes the combination too hot and unwieldy as far as gain stages. Having the Cali76 comp come after the SV, and or DCX presumably too, allows for more intuitive or easy gain control, and better nuance.

I wonder... Does anyone else find that to be the case/agree with that; does anyone else prefer the other way-- Cali76 comp before DCX and or BassRig SV? Is there any established or growing consensus about which order in the chain is better?

As everyone here knows, I always run my compressor last specifically for that reason. It will make managing gain stages easier plus gels all the other effects together. I use a compressor like you would in a studio. To me if you begin with compressor you are putting a chock on every pedal down the line. Last, every pedal has full range. YMMV
