New Origin Effects DCX Bass

i'll have to try my DCX into my Revolt and then into my Empress comp since i haven't tried that combo before. At the moment, i'm running my DCX into my Origin SV, sometimes with a Cali CB or Empress comp, but at last night's gig i ran them into the new UA 1176 and i was really happy with my sound.

BTW, which of three channels were you running the Empress in the loop?

I am using the Vintage Dirt channel almost 100% now. It does take out a little bottom end and it sounds much better boosting the LF on the DCX than the Revolt. That goes for HF as well.

I am running the DCX with both HF and LF around 2:00. I have the ReVolts Bass and Treble at 12, with the Mids around 2:00. It is extra thick and juicy. They really complement each other well. DCX is in EQ mode, with gain around 10-11:00. I prefer the slight breakup from the ReVolt over the DCX.

Thanks; Empress Bass Compressor is a nice unit and is about as complicated as a compressor can be. I need it to sit between what may well be the C4, 3-5:1 ratio and zero noise or tone coloration.

The DCX Bass can't be anything but great, with that type of signal conditioning, in a post compression position and in OD mode, pushing on the Revolt Bass Tube Preamp section or just the uncolored and noise free compressed signal.

I know it will all sound great together!

I am using the original Empress, not the Bass specific version. Really easy to dial in and has great LED metering. Only compressor pedal I have ever liked. It's completely transparent, and dead quiet.

The original is also twice the Real Estate on a limited area. It's interesting to me how important metering seems to be for so many, when it was almost never found on other than rack gear.

This goes to the desire of a simple, zero noise, no tone coloration-transparancy compressor that wasn't designed to ring the livin' sh*t out of the signal, be a hard celling limiter or pump and breath like a 300 lbs dude at the top of the staircase. The Rothwell Love Squeeze is probably not for every Bass player...;)

Interesting, as well...

I also really like the #2 Channel (Marshall Super Bass 100) dirt, but as you know, I've replaced the 12AX7 with the 12AT7 vintage tube in the ReVolt. (My first real Bass amp was a '67 Plexi Marshall Super Bass 100 with two angled 4x12" matching cabinets and had an AMPEG V4B on the other cabinet soon after the stack came to live at my house.)

I'm interested in the DCX with the #1 Channel (SVT) and the DCX light drive. As you also know I'm jacking around with #3 Channel after taming it with the tube swap by mixing the Flange on the wet drive of the wet/dry mix.

I play in an Americana/Classic rockish originals band with a very good guitar player and keyboardist. Most of our stuff calls more of a vintage driving rock sound, especially live, or I get completely lost in the mix. I'm kind of going for that Dusty Hill tone. Very tight, thick, and sounds aggressive soloed, but you can't really tell it's distorted in a mix unless you're listening closely. I usually have the gain set somewhere between 10:00-12:00.

On a few of our slower songs I can get away with the clean channel, but before getting the DCX it was kind of unusable for me. I play a P Bass with TI flats, so I am already a little boomy without a lot of top end. The clean channel seemed to accentuate this and I could never get the sound right with the Revolt EQ. It does sound a ton better with a HF boost from the DCX. It seems to boost a wider range of frequencies than the revolts eq.

I have no use for the modern OD channel at all. Except maybe kicking it in at the end of the set where we just make noise.

This is another bonus on the tube swap was extended headroom and a smoother later breakup. The #1 Channel sounds great now, but has even less gain breakup than before. (I also have the 5 band EQ going on from the Torpedo C.A.B. M+, too.) Bringing in a sweet drive from the DCX will go nicely there.

You are not the only one to abandon that #3 Channel. I think it must be some Euro-vibe sledgehammer thing going on with the 12AX7. It is now useable and I want it for a special application, not an all ways on use sound. I'm planning to run the synth/compressor straight to the Torpedo and bypassing the ReVolt. I will see what the DCX does for that combination in EQ mode.

*I'm also going to spring the $10.00 for the MESA Subway 2x12" cabinet IR and see about working with that cabinet and not the 8x10" on the Torpedo. (It takes laptop time to change DynIR cabinets, while tone tweaking can be done by phone.)

The bonus there is. IF I want to have an SVT/8x10" sound and abandon the C.A.B. M+ tools with the ReVolt Bass Tube Preamp. I can do a DI out off of the ReVolt with cab sim and end up using the Torpedo/DI for the synth exclusively with the 2x12" IR. (This IR was created by MESA Engineering)

How are you running two DCX Bass pedals in your application with the ReVolt or other combination(s)?
when i run two of them i usually don't run them into anything else, but occasionally into an Origin SV. i set one for clean and the other one for heavy overdrive and switch between them.

I'm considering getting the DCX, but it seems like most people are running it along with something else. Does anybody use the DCX in overdrive mode as a single pedal? I'm interested in using as an overdrive pedal, but I don't really want to have to have an (eq, booster etc) to make it sound good live.

I like it with the Scorpion- dunno why this combo isn’t lauded.I run it in EQ mode, tho-

I've been using it since early summer as a single pedal. My plan was to use it in OD mode as the main gain stage/dirt/overdrive on my mini board, but I found it has plenty of gain on EQ mode so I use it for overdrive in the EQ setting since it gives me the adaptive voicing features as well.

It seems to have more low end in EQ mode. Does it seem to lose some bottom in OD mode?

If you mean "something else" as an amp or DAW or other sound producer, then I guess the answer would be yes they are.

This video takes ya through the DCX Bass flavors by itself.
I meant other pedals. Some seem to use it with the 64 or SV. Some like it with other pedals in combination with the DCX. I think I may go ahead and purchase the pedal. It does sound good in the videos I've watched. Thanks

Not to my ears. But it's an inherently bright clipping voice (lots of sizzle in the overdrive harmonics) so the more prominent upper register activity may be tricking your ears into thinking there is less low end. I rarely use the DCX Bass on "flat" I found it so bright. It's usually on "medium" or "dark" voicing.

I currently use the B7K direct and it sounds pretty good, but can get a little gnarly on top. Seems like the DCX with the adaptive eq would tame the fizz. Considered buying a LPF to tame the highs, but my church pedal board is pretty small so fewer pedals the better.
