Well, I am not that old, just almost 39
So for me, as teenager, the big new attraction was stuff from the 90's, the whole grunge thing and such.
I too started out as a metal head though.
Some of my friends who was more into "alternative" music from the 80's introduced me to one of the big danish pioneers (In Denmark we have always been hopelessly behind stuff happening out in the real world) for sort of a New Wavish sound: Kliché.
All their lyrics are in Danish though, so you probably won't get the full experience out of listening...
They only released two albums, but those are on the other hand just perfect.
Their first album is from 1980 called "Supertanker" and is on the approved national list of works of cultural importance (together with other great national works of arts such as the weekly Donald Duck comic magazine (I am not making this stuff up!)), yes, the government actually made such a list, ironically one of the most well known songs on that album is "Militskvinder" which is based on a Danish translation of one of Mao's poems (The video is not the official one, by the way):
This song everyone should be able to understand though, as the lyrics are based on the international morse alphabet. (The song is by the way wrongly credited to Lars Hug, which was the lead singer/guitarist of the group, but later had a great solo career making a quite special brand of pop):
And one of my personal favorites from their second album "Ok, Ok Boys"
And another favorite on that album, which full title is "Openheimer's Formiddag" :
