NFL Off Season

The scouting material I read on him is that he is slow and slow to react in space.......

Replay the Parker 75 yard run in the Super Bowl. Manuel overplayed and was out of position.

Other than that......he IS a good, strong, young guy who will be missed in the Seattle secondary. I'm sad to see him go.

What do you base those comments on? Or are you just repeating something you heard some guy on TV say?

i have seen him play many times. sure he torched USC with his legs (and lets face it, that game is the only reason why we're talking about him right now...), but do you really think a coach would let their quarterback run like that every sunday? he succeeded because he was able to run all over college Ds, but if you arent fast like vick it aint gonna happen in the nfl. he also doesnt have a great arm...he has a good one, but not a great one. and whats with that weird throwing motion? its a pretty low release, his throws might get batted down pretty easily. i dont know, i've seen him many times it just doesnt look like his style will translate well.

maybe bust was a bad word. i think he needs to have a lot of patience and he needs to be in the right place. he might not be a bust, but i think he wont ever be more than an average quarterback. of course, i hope he proves me wrong because he seems to have a strong work ethic.

and i dont have espn or anything, i wish i did so i could see someone actually talk about this.

Right on. Nice breakdown on Young by the way. I had to make sure you weren't just posting something you heard Jim Rome or one of those types saying. :D

I know what you mean about Young. There aren't many offenses in the NFL that he can just step right in to. The only one that comes to mind is the one currently being handled by Vick, which is what you said. Maybe the Saints would be a good fit, or even Tampa. I'd love to see him land in Tennessee or Miami. Nick Saban could do some damage with Young running his show. Much more so than Brees.

I think Young will do fine as long as he gets out of the pocket to throw. His delivery will cause him some problems if he is forced to stand in the pocket and throw. At the same time, you know defensive coordinators will be game planning to keep him in the pocket. Should be interesting to see how he turns out.

He is definitely an interesting prospect.

I doubt New Orleans would take him...young would provide more questions than answers for a team that is desperately in need of a leader. I think he will end up in Tennessee because it looks like Oakland = Culpepper and Miami = Brees...and Leinart is definitely the first QB off the board. If the Titans pass on him he could fall really deep just like Aaron Rodgers did last year.

Young's Passing Stats:
65.3% completion rating, 3036 yards with 212 completions out of 325 attempts, 26 TDs, 10 interceptions, and passer rating of 163.9.

Leinart's Passing Stats:
65.7 completion rating, 3815 yards with 283 out of 431 attempts, 28 TDs, 8 interceptions, and a passer rating of 157.7

Vince had 12 TDs with 1050 yards on 155 carries. Mat had 6 TDs with 36 yards on 51 carries.

Now tell me why Young is a weaker passer and Leinart is so far superior. Both have numbers that any QB would kill to have.

Another thing about Vince that takes away from his rushing numbers: Vince rarely runs when carrying the ball. Watch the Rose Bowl again; notice his almost lazy jog with which he still cut apart every defense Texas faced last year. While I wouldn't put in Vick's league in as far as extreme mobility, I think he is as fast and nearly as quick as Vick. Coupled with a much larger and heavier frame.

I can understand why you might say he is a bust. Mainly because any offense that he is put in will have to be rebuilt to suit him. But so did the offenses of Vick, Culpepper, and to an extent McNabb. Maybe less for McNabb because he replaced Cunningham.

But considering that he will go to one of the 5 worst teams in the league, rebuilding a crappy team around a player is easier than rebuilding an effective offense around a single player.

Where are you getting the QB ratings from? The highest rating possible is 158.3. Is the college system different from the NFL system?

damn! it looks like the cowboys got akin ayodele, i was hoping to see him in a browns uniform. :scowl:

He can really be a great contributor.

Next on the Cowboys list, I'm hoping:

Resign Keyshawn, keep him happy.
Do not sign Terrell Owens, he is a cancer.
Draft:
  • WR
  • LB
  • Offensive Line

Through Free Agency, add:
  • PK - preferrably Vinateiri
  • FS
  • LB - I was really hoping for Witherspoon, but Peterson will do!
  • OT

Yeah - the college rating system goes far beyond 158.3. Kinda strange. I'm not sure about all of the factors that go into calculating the ratings, since when referring to the stats Adam posted, we see that Leinart had more touchdowns, fewer interceptions, more yardage, and a better completion percentage than Young, but his rating was lower. Yards per attempt, maybe?

I think Young's got great potential. That throwing motion is kinda funky, but his mechanics are likely to improve - plus he seems to have those elusive intangibles, like leadership and big game ability.

They did re-sign Ahman Green as well...i don't know if that's good or bad....

i miss Sharper too...Longwell im not sure i will so much...

and is Favre retiring??

I didnt count resigning Green, because I think that was a given it was going to happen. Coming off his injury, no team was going to give up the big dollars Green wanted. I assumed he'd do a one year deal, just to see if he was back or not, and that's exactly what happened. If he has a great season, he'll get a better deal next year, and if not, Samkon's waiting in the wings.

I can't stand QB rating systems.

They tend to favor higher percentages in completions, which can easily be acheived with the dink and dunk method.

They count incompletions, but don't give credit for WR drops.

What about a QB that has better numbers on third down, third and long, in the fourth quarter, when trailing, etc... These are interesting factors, that while perhaps difficult to calculate, are important QB factors.

They count interceptions too highly. If somebody thinks that interceptions are always the QBs fault, they're mistaken. Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not. If a WR misruns a route, doesn't run a crisp route, or telegraphs their route, this can lead to an interception. What about a tipped pass? What about a muffed catch by a receiver that floats in the air? What about an end-of-the-half or end-of-the-game hail mary? These factors should be taken into consideration.

It is extremely difficult to objectively quantify a QBs value. First, it's a team sport. If your offensive line sucks, you have no receivers, your tight end is lousy, your RB can't pass block, your defense leaves you in bad field position, or any other number of factors occurs, it will affect a QB's ability. But further, QBs, more than any other position, rely on intangibles.

Look at Aikman and Brady.
Now look at Manning and Marino.

It's not cut and dry which of the four QBs would be best to have. Aikman and Brady combined for 6 Super Bowls. Manning and Marino combined for 0. Nobody would deny, I don't think, that all 4 QBs are good.

Hmmm.

Daunte Culpepper to the Dolphins.
Drew Brees to the Saints.
Kevin Mawae and David Givens to the Titans.
Jon Kitna to the Lions.

Now, what do the Saints do in the draft? It's time to start looking for a trade.

Completely different than what I thought would happen...I thought the Saints wouldn't attract any of those guys, much less Brees.

The Saints will probably end up drafting brick fergie. he and jamal brown on both sides would be pretty scary, and this would help fill the void left by lecharles bentley. even though A.J. Hawk would help the Saints out a lot more, I just don't see any of the other top 5 teams trading up because they all need picks (although the jets could be a possibility). after all, brick has amazing potential.

and i guess Matt Leinart will be a Titan.

im also praying that by some miracle, Haloti Ngata falls to the browns at 12.

The ViQueens will soon be the Packers...only in purple.:D

I can't believe they let Longwell go. Apparently Thompson wants to rid himself of everything Wolf, Holmgren or Sherman related, so he can build his own team...

The Green Bay Slackers. The only "pro" team fielded with Arena "quality" players.

As much as I'd like to see Favre play at least one more season, he should get out while the getting is good. He has nothing left to prove. 2 Super Bowls, one ring, 3 MVP's, on top of most of the QB records...first ballot Hall of Famer. This Packer team is not one he should come back to...sad to say.

Packers just signed Ryan Pickett from the Rams. I'm not real familiar with him, but his supposed to be a grade A run stuffin' Defensive tackle. I hate to see Grady go, but Pickett is 6 or 7 years younger, so it is a no brainer. I just hope Mario Williams is still around at pick #5. Kampmann, Pickett, Colin Cole, Mario, and KGB on passing downs could be a pretty damn good defensive line.
