They are now in the position of a lot of mid-level teams. Those 1st round picks work for a while, but they wear out.
If Mario has any sense, he'll run off Rutherford and find a real GM. I am about sick of that joker and all the crap deals he has made.
There was maybe a time when he was crafty and ahead of the curve, but those days are far behind him and the Pens are now paying for it. The last few years I think he's been making deals just to make them. Just for fun so he'll be in the news making another deal, jerking Sullivan around all along.
Besides the Jack Johnson deal, I will never forgive him for trading Ryan Reaves as part of the Brassard deal.

If the Pens dismiss Sullivan, that'll be the indicator to me they have no idea what's going on.

That Leafs/Blue Jackets series--kind of nutty score wise.
4 of the 5 games saw a 3-0 lead at one point in the game.
Columbus shuts out TO in game 1
TO shuts out Columbus in game 2
Game 3--Leafs blow a 3-0 lead & lose in OT
Game 4 the Jackets return the favour, then sandwiching the OT games with games 5 & 2, Columbus gets a 3-0 win.

Wake-up call for me when you mention the Penguins as a mid-level team. As I'd mentioned earlier we are spoiled and still think a team with all that star power can just crank it up when necessary. As we've seen over the past three post-seasons, they evidently cannot just flick a switch and pour it on. Too many holes in the lineup and inconsistencies do indeed make them a mid-level team. Maybe on the upper end of mid-level, but that still won't take them far.
Although he eventually ended up getting a decent return on Brassard/Sheahen (Bjugstad & McCann), it cost them more than it was worth for the time he did spend in the 'burgh and produced absolutely nothing. I gotta admit I thought Brassard would provide some playoff punch as a third-line center and not only did he disappoint but Reaves presence was sorely missed.
One of the NBCSN guys alluded to that as he was mentioning the punishment Crosby takes on a nightly basis with no repercussions.
That all went down as Rutherford was having fun going from a small and speedy team to a slow and physical team, then back and forth.
Sullivan was stuck in the middle trying to make it all work on the ice as he too had to then go from one strategy to another as Rutherford changed his mind.
I really felt like they hit the sweet spot with Reaves, having that on ice protector as you mentioned for Crosby and Malkin. Especially Malkin as we all know how easily he is distracted on the ice when the opposing team picks away at him.
Here we are coming up on the end of the Murray contract. Is Rutherford going to send Jarry down the road and hand over a wad of cash and years to Murray? I certainly hope not. He isn't worth it, and never has been.
