NHL Season 2023-24

Well I think this year is the last hurrah for the Pens on many levels.

Including Xfinity … which just cut my "Sportsnet Pittsburgh" channel and wants me to bump up another tier now. Not sure it's even worth it!

At least I can still listen to Mearsy on the radio via my Penguins app. New ownership tried to cut him too. Fools.

Pens may have just found their savior. ;)

Jesse Puljujarvi, former fourth overall pick, was signed to a two-year deal at basically league minimum. Edmonton couldn't unload him, and when they finally did, he didn't impress in Carolina. Now, coming back from double hip surgery, the word 'longshot' doesn't begin to describe him.

But strangely enough, I'm mildly optimistic he might actually be able to provide a jolt into our bottom six. And now, with something to prove, he may become an asset. He's young enough to make a full comeback physically, and despite all his rough times, he's always had a very positive attitude.

Oilers fall one short of tying the '92-93 Penguins' record for longest winning streak (17 games).

Different era back then, with only a five-minute OT (5-on-5), no 3-on-3 and no shootout. Surprisingly, the Oilers had only one shootout win in their streak.

Nope.

I used to look forward to the Skills events more than the actual game, but over time it just became mundane and repetitive.

Even though they changed a few things up this year, it was still a yawn-fest for the most part. I liked the skater vs goalie where they had one minute to score as many as they can, but most of the other events were rather blah. Kucherov's effort reflected my enthusiasm as a fan.

They certainly made the rules of each event clear...as mud.

By the looks of it, it's going to take years, before the Hawks get back to being a competitive team again. Re-builds are tough on both fans and players! Here's to hoping that management uses their 1st round picks wisely and uses them to build around Bedard. He's the future of the franchise.

It's always a good day when Fleury beats the Pens. I still rue the day they sold him out for that chump Mr. Glove Side High.
Well done Fleury and congratulations on climbing into second place for goalie wins. I had no idea he was that high up.

Well, Ovechkin took a record away from Gretzky today (most empty net goals)...

Ovie's been having an awful year, but I'm pulling for him to buck the slump and get back on track to capture the big one. He's a good Moscow boy, like many of my best friends. When I still lived in Moscow ( I left in 2012, "Before the Insanity") I sometimes would go to Luzhzniki for hockey games. Saw a lot of NHL stars there when they did the big sendoff game when Fetisov retired, and again when Federov retired. Got to see Chelios there, they were having a lot of fun

Sounds like a cool experience in Moscow, but we'll agree to disagree on Ovechkin. I for one do NOT want him anywhere near Gretzky's record. In a sport where players are known for their unselfishness, I've always felt Ovi was the most selfish player ever to lace them up. Although I admit it's virtually inevitable that he'll break it, I would not be upset if he falls short.

Waiting on word from the NHL disciplinary team regarding the Morgan Rielly hit near the end of the game at Ottawa Saturday night. I've heard everything from two games to six games being floated around.
Funny, but I can't help but think that if this episode had of happened in Arizona, quite likely no one will have noticed.

Brad Marchand just played his 1,000 NHL game. I know that not everyone is a fan, but I am. As he cut down on the stupid and dirty play, more people have noticed just how skilled he is. Moreover, he has been a great captain this year. The B's had 2 of best centers in the NHL retire last year yet they are still racking up points this years. That doesn't happen unless you have excellent leadership in the room.

Marchand is in a 3-way tie for 9th place overall in career shorthanded goals with 35. Over his career, he scores .91 points per game and at age 35 he is still producing at that rate with 25 goals and 25 assists over 53 games this year.
