Moreover, he has been a great captain this year. The B's had 2 of best centers in the NHL retire last year yet they are still racking up points this years. Marchand is in a 3-way tie for 9th place overall in career shorthanded goals with 35. Over his career, he scores .91 points per game and at age 35 he is still producing at that rate with 25 goals and 25 assists over 53 games this year.

I don't think there are too many hockey fans who don't recognize Marchand's superstarstar level skills.

But it is hard to overlook his extensive history of dirty play and selfish behavior. I'm willing to give him credit for at least attempting to reign in some of his obnoxious behavior in his autumn years, but that doesn't mean he deserves to have his past antics forgiven and forgotten.

This is hockey - not football, baseball, or basketball, and the vast majority of NHL players are Canadians. These are people who apologize for hurting your hand when you punch them in the nose.

Fair enough, maybe Nova Scotians are wired a little differently.

Going to be an interesting trade deadline. A couple of deals already (Lindholm, Monahan), and all eyes are on Calgary as they unload a few guys (Hanifan, Markstrom) who can bring in lots of pieces toward their rebuild/retool.

Very curious to see what Pens GM Dubas does with UFA Jake Guentzel. Does he deal him, or keep him and hope to re-sign him over the summer? He's a steady producer, but the last thing the Penguins need is another 30+ guy carrying a long and expensive contract. On the other hand, slim chance that any player/prospect/draft pick you'd get for him is going to be a consistent 30-40 goal scorer as Jake has proven. I'm leaning toward keeping him in the black and gold.

A bit OT, but I went to see the Princeton play Brown down in Providence. One of my best friends from high school has son who is a defenseman for Princeton. One of the forwards he had to contain was Ryan St. Louis. Hmm, that last name is familiar. Sure enough, his bio on the Brown website helpfully mentioned that his dad, Martin, played for............................. Vermont.

The Tigers beat the Bears in a thoroughly enjoyable game that only cost $12. At the end of the game, the Brown band skated on the ice and played, even forming a heart for a belated Valentine's tribute.

As far as the trade deadline goes, the only guys I could see the B's trying to trade are Ullmark and DeBrusk. Given how well, the goalie tandem has worked, I'd rather keep Ullmark and play the tandem in the SCP. I'm not sure what Jake could bring back. He had a hot streak after Christmas, but is now back in a scoring funk. Maybe a change will do him good.

Pens beat league-leading Vancouver on the first game of the road trip, then proceed to lose three in a row. Shut out by Seattle, then Calgary comes back from 2-0 and 3-1 to win 4-3, and finally they were spanked in Edmonton, 6-1. Four goals in three games isn't going to get many W's.

Let the fire sale begin...this current squad is accomplishing nothing. Anybody not wearing #87 should be available.

Four days after this post, DeBrusk has a goal and an assist in a 4-1 victory over the Leafs in Toronto. That was one of the most complete games the B's have played this year which was important coming off an embarrassing 5-1 drubbing by the Islanders.

The Leafs game was closer than the score appears. Swayman made some outstanding saves and the game was in question until the B's scored halfway through the 3rd to make it 4-1.

Update on Bruins TV play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards -

The Boston Globe did a long interview with him last week. He said he noticed his speech had slowed in the offseason a few years ago. He did not have a stroke and is otherwise in good health. He has been seen by many of the top neurologists and speech pathologists in Boston and none of them have figured it out yet. He does a lot of speech therapy and I have noticed over the last month or two that he sounds better. Jack retained his sense of humor remarking that he picked a bad time to slow down as the game has become even faster. He was generous in his praise of his colleagues at NESN, his family and fans, and his medical providers.
