Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Puck Drop

Well, that's the most disjointed play I've seen by the Flyers in a long time. Bruins looked unstoppable and the Flyers couldn't get anything going.

And from the "Insult To Injury" Department: Couturier out with - yep, you guessed it - a head injury. He took a Kimmo Timmonen slap shot right behind the ear. Hit his helmet (thank God), but still a nasty-looking injury. Briere was the only natural Center left for awhile there.

Bryzgalov got chased in the 2nd period after giving up the 5th goal. Bobrovsky looked sharp the rest of the way, giving up one. Tim Thomas was awesome in picking up the 6-0 shutout.

We've been on a bit of a tear lately, but I haven;t caught too much of the action. Working 2 jobs and going to school has really cut into my hockey, FB, and TB times. I'm hoping to be able to keep up with the team a lot better now that I'm down to a single job and no school for the holidays. From what I've read, Honey Badger (Craig Smith) is making a big splash nationally finally. Kinda funny that he wasn't on anyone but Nashville's radar over the summer, and now he's leading an NHL team in points. RotY should be a lock if he can keep this kind of pace up.

The other thing that jumps out at me is that all of our "NHL ready" youngsters on the blue line weren't NHL ready. Eckholm is overseas, Ellis has been ok at best, Blum hasn't been too hot... Sigh. Maybe BErgfors and some of those D guys can keep it together and we can make another surprise run.

That was one of the better games start to finish for the B's.

The game winning goal was scored 27 seconds into the 1st period. They were 3 of 8 on the PP and were 6 of 6 on the PK including a 5 minute major. Chara got a Gordie Howe hat trick. Thomas had a shutout but you could make a case that he wasn't the #1 star. Seguin found his scoring touch again.

The game really wasn't as close as the score (6-0) indicated. :D

Hooooooly cow, the Caps looked miserable tonight. Lackluster passes, no offensive flow, and Neuvirth let a half-assed whack at the puck from the blue line get by him when there was only one Avs player in the zone... can't fathom what was more important for him to be looking at than the one opposing player on his half of the rink.

Seems like the Caps are going to play .500 hockey the rest of the season, which means even if they limp into the playoffs, they're not going to have nearly enough cohesiveness to mount any kind of postseason push. So here's the new plan: screw around for the next 50-ish games, end up with two lottery picks (ours and Colorado's from the Varlamov trade), and then let George McPhee and Dale Hunter figure out what offseason transactions need to happen to build a team that Hunter can work with. Semin, Vokoun, and Knuble won't be re-signed, and I think they'll strongly consider trading Mike Green, who's got a world of talent but is perpetually injured. It's looking more and more like the Caps team that's contended for the Stanley Cup (at least by regular season standards) for the last three seasons is fading more and more each game, so it looks like it may be time to go back to the drawing board and enter more of a rebuilding phase.

Watched up until the 4 goal and turned it off. Hopefully this isn't the beginning of a down swing,...but yeah. First time I've turned a game off in a long time. When I checked the score,....I'm glad I did. Pretty pathetic.

Avalanche win was much needed. They need to learn to rely on Giguere. He is much more consistent then Varlamov (playing with Colorado anyway).

The floodgates were opened in Pittsburgh last night, and Malkin went off like he can. Weird to see the same goalie chased twice in one game, especially Ryan Miller. I turned it off for stretches since I'm not a fan of blowout hockey either.

Fleury picks up win 200, so yay for him. Not all good news as the Pens lost Craig Adams to injury. Status publicly unknown at the moment. Next up is a visit from Chicago on Tuesday.

The VAN/TOR game was a fun one to watch. I was hoping for the Leafs to win though.

Giguere gave up a lot of rebounds; if the Caps were playing any kind of adult hockey, they'd have put one or two in. He's definitely capable of getting between the puck and the back of the net, but I thought he blew a number of opportunities to control the puck.

That said, both Colorado goals were directly attributable to Neuvirth failing to control make easy grabs (particularly that ridiculous floating first goal), so it's not like the Caps are excelling at the goaltender position.

Yeah, we love Marchand here in Boston. But not to be overlooked on that goal were two things:

1. Bergeron's (arguably the best defensive forward in the game) forechecking that kept the puck in the zone; and
2. Seguin's perfect flip pass over the defenseman's stick that landed right on Marchand's tape.

That line is just a blast to watch.
