Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Puck Drop

RE: Phi@Pit. That was one of those game that was hard fought by both teams. Those types of hard working games are entertaining to watch and that is one that I would have enjoyed no matter the outcome. I'm happy the Flyers won. They looked sloppy in the 1st but started to get their legs under them.

Mezz was a mess out there though. At one point I stopped counting his turnovers and fanned on passes. Uncharacteristic for him I think.

The Jagr goal was real nice. Didn't do anything to silence the boo birds. I know why they are booing him,...but you'd think a player that helped a franchise win 2 Stanley Cups would get a little more respect from the fans.

I've said it before; Bobrovsky is a bit more reliable goaltender then Bryz right know. I know Bobs is capable of being a number one. He certainly does take advantage of his opportunities and just seems to be more solid and consistent of the two Flyer goalies.

I don't know the specifics of Bryz's deal,...but if he doesn't straighten up and start playing some better than average hockey at the goalie position, he may be finding himself with less and less game time. Bryz is touted as an elite goaltender and yes there are a lot of fluky goals that you can't really fault him on but what I'm seeing is average and inconsistent goaltending from him. At this point I'd rather see Bobs start the WC.

JVR,...c'mon man,...please don't turn into Jeff High and Wide Carter. If you are gonna get off the sneid you need to start hitting the net.

RE: Fights. Yeah it bugs me when I tell a new acquaintance that I'm a hockey fan and watch an awful lot of it and their response is something to the effect of,..."gotta love the fights". That's like saying I only watch Nascar just for the crashes. It's at that point that I just chalk it up to the person being ignorant of the sport and purpose of fighting within the game. I'm with Darth Handsome,...like it or not fighting in the NHL has it's place.

While I haven't seen the NHLN commentary on the fights,....I think it may be less of a commentary on fighting an more just an opportunity to criticize the league. I'll admit that there is likely some validity to NHLN's commentary (I shouldn't really be talking as I haven't actually heard it) but I think that so little is known about concussions and head injuries that it is very much still a work in progress and to be honest,....I haven't seen a whole lot of concussions or any other injuries occur as a result of a fight. Not saying it doesn't happen,...but I think they are making a mountain out of a molehill.

I don't know,...if any of you guys follow say;...NCAA Hockey where fighting more heavily penalized,...is the respect level higher or lower than the NHL? Do players still fight even they they know it's an automatic game misconduct (and I think a fine)? What say you?

Yeah I saw the one finger salute from that fan (rocking one of those powder blue Pens jerseys). Haha. The one guy that was right in front of Jagr when he did the salute sorta sheepishly waved back at him. Chuckles.

They weren't booing Jagr,...they were saying "I love Yooooooo".

Awesome game this afternoon! Bernie Parent making a few saves including one spectacular one. Then having to come out and acknowledge the crowd. Goalies overall stealing the show. Lindros to Leclair goal! Roenick throwing his body around. The crowd whistling at Duguay like old times. Orest Kindrachuk coming out with the fake mustache and hair! Clarke almost falling on the ice at the introductions. LCB line! Players had a great time!

The Winter Classic will be hard pressed to surpass today's game!

Derail to the WJC....why did team USA wait until Canada had them on the ropes to finally push back and start playing? Poor performance overall I thought. Then again, Canada is really good. I think the Russians may be the only ones to serious challenge them.

Back to the NHL....the Wild are free falling. Sad to see it when they were playing so well just last month. No comment on the Pens failure to show up against NJ. They don't play again for a few days, good thing.

I just wish they'd let you program your DVR like you could your VCR! Dangit! To get the entire game I have to grab 3 different programs and get two hours of garbage that I don't want!

Why can't I tell my DVR to start on this channel at this time like I could with my old VCR? Why can I only find the program and click record? Then when they change the programming or the timing is off by a minute or so... Damn technology!

Apparently Montreal fans are pissed that their new head coach can't speak French. Seems a bit silly to me, but those crazy French-Canadians are pretty identity-conscious. The article also references a fight in practice between Plekanec and Subban... and people say the Caps are a mess... :rollno:

That is the classic non-apology apology - "I'm sorry if I offended you". Strangely enough, that might be enough as the team's initial position was "go suck eggs (or pound sand), we're trying to win some hockey games here."

I don't think that's a case of identity but a simple question of language.
Montreal is french speaking.

I wonder if the coach of the Moscow team speaks Russian ......

Whoa....how do you leave Brad Richards alone on the doorstep like that? Laviolette is letting his guys have it now, haha.

Now is about a good time for Talbot to score.

Was it just me or was that the slowest Ice surface you've ever seen? I only caught the third period (watching the MSU bowl game OT). But it seemed like all the players were moving in slow motion. Maybe it was camera angles?
