We're talking about Jagr here, not Lidstrom or Gretzky. A great player and prolific scorer, but guys on the ice need to be showing him respect? Respect for what? Scoring a bunch of goals, then being selfish and running off to Russia for a few years when no one would pay him what he wanted in the NHL? Jagr has never led a team to anything in the NHL, but he was a great sidekick.

I like Jagr and all, but he doesn't fit in that group of guys in my mind. Besides, Rupp was having a little fun and Hartnell acted like he was disparaging the guys mother.

They could almost have swam in it, it was that bad. You could see the seams between the sections used to build the rink underneath. They had to stop play several times during the game to patch up trouble spots in the ice by shoveling snow into spots and hitting it with CO2 extinguishers to quick freeze it. They also shut down the kiddie rink during the game so the truck could concentrate on just the main ice surface. It was a problem they talked about much during the game with the puck bouncing and the players laboring to get moving.

The salute is Jagr's trademark move. Doesn't matter who he is. You don't mess with any other player's trademark. It's a general rule in all of sports. When you do that like Rupp did, someone will get in your face about it from the other team.

Yeah....Hartnell got in his face, Rupp dropped his gloves, and Hartnell skated away. Real nice. I don't remember Jagr having a signature move when he was with the Pens.

Are we really debating if it is OK to mock someones "signature move"? How many guys have these? Seems more like a video game thing. Does Datsyuk have one? Giroux? Stamkos? Either Sedin? Honestly, this signature move thing is new to me. The really good guys score, celebrate briefly with teammates, then prepare for the ensuing faceoff. If Crosby or Malkin have one, I'm embarrassed.

Oh, as for the ice....yeah, it looked really slushy. You could see the plywood joint lines shining through. A couple of the goal cam shots made it look like there was at least an inch of slush on the surface. Crazy.

I didn't mind it either; I think if you've got enough of an ego to put some 'signature move' out there, you've got to be prepared for some other guy with an ego to mock it when he bests you (not that Rupp specifically beat Jagr). I like Hartnell's game between the whistles, but I've always thought that he was a lot like Karl Malone was in the NBA: a tough guy with a lot of talent, but someone who spends a lot more time whining then solving problems.

That ice was pretty soft, but it wasn't nearly as bad as last year's Classic in Pittsburgh. Much as I like being fair and distributing the Classic to a range of hockey markets, they really need to consider limiting the venues to true winter locations (i.e. not the East Coast). On paper, I love the idea of the Winter Classic coming to DC one day, but realistically, the climate here just won't support it four out of five years.

Jagr had that move with the Pens. It goes along with his number 68. It's part of his whole persona. Some Pens fan.

There's a few players around the league with signature moves, I can't think of them off-hand right now. Several share the go down on one knee then fist-pump. Danny Briere is one that does that after scoring a goal but he's not the only one.

I do remember Brian Propp and the guffaw he used to do. That was a unique one. Duguay used to blow a kiss to the Philly fans in the Spectrum.

Detroit, the only city in the NHL where enforcers carry assault weapons, a hockey stick just isn't enough. :hmm:

We're on the border line climate wise ourselves. It's really not much warmer than Pittsburgh here. I'd say we're at best a 50/50 proposition for a cold New Years. We do have some great indoor hockey here over the New Years weekend. The Great Lakes invitational (at the Joe) is probably the best college hockey event outside of the NCAA tournament.

Yeah, I'm in the process of getting my permit. Won't have it in time for the NAIAS (Auto Show) though. I have to attend it this year.

Maybe Lansing instead?

I don't remember that about him. I remember the amazing goals and the SC's though. I guess I just don't pay much attention to some guys signature move. Apparently it is a big deal to Scott Hartnell.

I'll call my uncles tonight and ask them if they remember Jagr's signature move after he scored a goal. Wait, no I won't. I don't really care. :)

I'll warn you, I went to carry one time at the auto-show. I had a long walk from the DAC. But when I got to the door, after I purchased tickets, there was a big sign claiming "no weapons of any kind allowed".

They were wanding people at the door, somehow the 14 year old kid doing the wanding didn't notice my 4" 1911 on my belt? I even showed him my CPL. Anyway I walked in with my gun. I'm not sure it's legal to prevent legal armed carry on city owned property that isn't already on the list, and Cobo hall is not Cobo Arena, it doesn't "seat" 2500. So I'm not sure they can enforce it anyway. For the record don't ever try to carry at the Fox theater, they sent me back to the parking lot for a small pen knife.

I just need to get on the roof lot, that's all. Inside should be OK. Had a scary incident on the road picking up my son from the airport before Christmas. That's the reason for getting the permit.
