How about a lake? 
I think the winter classic is all about drumming up interest in the States. Bruins and Habs would also be a good matchup, but notice that all the teams so far have been US teams.
Of course, there's no reason that Canada couldn't put together one of these as well.

I think the first Winter classic was Habs against Oilers ....
That was the first Heritage Classic in 2003. From bleacherreport.com:
"Prior to the inception of the NHL Winter Classic, hockey fans had the Heritage Classic, an outdoor game played between two Canadian teams. The first Heritage Classic was played between the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens in 2003, and the second featured a match between the Calgary Flames and the Canadiens in 2011."

I'd be all for that as an annual event, but it's only been formally organized twice, as the article indicates.
The Winter Classic has involved these teams:
'08: Pittsburgh at Buffalo;
'09: Detroit at Chicago;
'10: Philadelphia at Boston;
'11: Washington at Pittsburgh; and
'12: NY Rangers at Philadelphia
Clearly an attempt to drum up interest in the eastern and midwestern US.
It seems like the NHL's marketing strategy has been East Coast teams + Det and Chi for years now. I'd love to see the Heritage classic resume, but it would have to be earlier or later in the year due to the weather needing to be fair.
I think the best scenario for a new Heritage classic would be Winnipeg and one of their old Campbell rivals like Calgary, or an original Central rival (Toronto). What better way to showcase a newly moved team than by putting it in the spotlight? The Roger's Centre would be the perfect place to play one, too.

I shut it off when it was 6-1 to keep myself from puking. At one point, Russia had 5 goals on 15 shots, and we had over 30 shots at that time & scored once. I think the shots ended up being 56-24 or something. Every time Russia crossed our blueline (which was rare) the f'n thing puck went in the net.

Well, Detroit (either the Big House in Ann Arbor or Comerica Park) looks like the next destination for the Winter Classic after all with Detroit and possibly Toronto. This from Yahoo's NHL site:

It's at a point where people associated with the League speak about it with inevitability. In fact, Tom Wilson President and CEO of Olympia Entertainment, which handles business operations for the Detroit Red Wings was seen on-site in Philadelphia.
Where will it be held? Who will the Red Wings play? Where does the NHL go after that with its outdoor game?

The NHL is keen on having this game at The Big House in Ann Arbor, with the probability of attracting over 100,000 fans to a game if the tickets are priced favorably. But having it at the University of Michigan's stadium means sharing the wealth with someone outside the family.
Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, meanwhile, is in the family. He also owns and operates Comerica Park, home to the Detroit Tigers. So if it's not in the Big House, it'll be at that house.
There's also a chance for the NHL to turn this into a celebration of hockey in Michigan, with the Great Lakes Invitational rolling the week before the Classic.
As far as opponents go, I get the feeling this is going to be a mold-breaker after three straight Classics featuring predictable Northeast rivalries.
The Maple Leafs would be the first Canadian team in the Classic, which would risk some ratings for NBC but would fulfill the NHL's Original Six jones for this annual event. The more people I talk to, the more think this is a good possibility especially to quiet Canadian critics writhing with jealousy over the Winter Classic being U.S.-centric.
This would also be a great spot to feature a team from California for the first time: The San Jose Sharks are a natural rival and a good fit here. Joe Thornton on "HBO 24/7" can only be a good thing.
Then there are the St. Louis Blues. A safe choice as a division rival and a cold-weather U.S. market. And as we know, you have to play on the road before you get one of these at home

The first outdoor game between Edmonton & Montreal was interesting as far as a novelty goes. But since then the whole 'winter classic' thing is kind of lost on me. I'll watch a few shifts, but I don't really get what the big deal is. So they're playing outside, whoop-dee-do.

Similarly, repeat offender Rene Bourque cracked Nick Backstrom across the face with his elbow in a true cheap shot late in last night's game. Shanahan gave Bourque a late Christmas gift by scheduling the disciplinary meeting via phone rather than in person, which guarantees that Bourque could get a maximum of only five games. Well, he got the max, but I think he easily deserved more.
I'm totally impressed with Cookie... never would have thought he'd have so few penalty minutes and still be a contributing member of a real hockey team. Kudos to him for making a concentrated effort to clean up his game.
Seriously. I read and watched all the offseason interviews. His story was believable, but I figured he would become ineffective. It's a little early for me to believe he has turned the corner completely, but there is so much to be happy about so far.

I can see a Detroit and Chicago rematch before I see any of the rest of that. The NHL also has to worry about the new division structure next year, and getting teams their home and home's in order. I don't see the game happening between out of conference teams next year specifically because of that. I can see the Heritage Classic making a comeback though, to try and foster rivalries between the Canadian teams now that they all will play each other every season.
The wildcard in all of this is where Phoenix will end up, because I can see that playing very heavily in the 2014 version of the Classic if they end up in Hartford, Hamilton, Quebec City, etc.
