I did not like the Classic Ray through the Orange. It had some frequencies, high mids, I found really really annoying and impossible to get rid of. That bass was awesome through my other amps, but just not the Orange. I tried everything including strings, set up, pickup height, and literally six different cabs.

How was the bottom end? I have a chance to get a good deal on a classic always wanted one.

It was OK. Not amazing, not bad, just OK. I think a Jazz or Ric or Sadowsky blows it away. Or an HH Ray. Or a Sabre. I love The way Rays feel and play but never liked single H Rays, except the pre EBMM Rays. They have the deep tone.

Both. I usually go into the passive with every bass. The preamp isn't very hot in the classics.

I liked the Classic Ray through my Mesa Scout much more than through the orange. I could dial out what I didn't like with the parametric EQ.

I had the Ray for a year. I liked the feel so much that I was contemplating a Nordstrand pickup and a preamp swap. But I decided to sell and get a G&L. Which kills through the Orange.

Of all the basses I've played through the Orange over the past 8 years, I've found the Orange shines with a G&L L1000, G&L M2000, Ric 4003, Sadowsky with both HC and SC pickups, Thumb, Fender Jazz (1975 with Fralins, American Standard with Nordstrands, mIM with Nordstrands), Tony Franklin Fretless, 73 P with Fralins, Pre EBMM Sabre, Ray HH, Sterling HH.

I listened to your advice and I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a 4003s but I chickened out went on Reverb started checking out the G&L's and saw a beautiful new USA L-2000 at a price I couldn't pass up should be here next week so thank you for your assistance.

You are going to love the L2000. My only advice is to not have the volume over 80% on the bass. Those are the hottest pickups I've ever experienced. Incredibly versitile once you get comfortable with the controls.

I know they are MIC, so Shuguang would be my first guess. It is not like there are many valve factories around these days anymore.

The baked in fatness of the preamp makes the awesome tone of the L/M 2000 bridge pickup just amazing.

+1 the thing I love about the Orange is it's not fighting the preamp of the G&L.

Question for orange people:

It's thrown all over on this forum, that it's never a good idea to mix a 410+115, but I see many orange users do it.

How does this combo work? I've played the Orange OBC 410 before and was impressed.
