As far as a pre-Gibson there may be no such thing. I think both Growler and Renegade are "Gibson Basses".

sorry, may be i wrong.
i have seen the information of Mackself in page 47 and you are right
the wiring of my bass is same as that information. but, i have added a switch to split coil of bridge pickup and that is awesome. i can choose more sound to use when i play.

Pre-Gibson Tobiases seem to be getting harder to find, is that the experience in the U.S and Europe? There's not that many in Australia, so never any coming up for sale here, unless I sell one of mine, hahaha.

My experience has been sort of the opposite. I asked Bartolini several questions via email and received answers to all of my questions. I was looking for information about the ultra rare wtmb Mike was testing to replace the TCT towards the end. I first spoke with Mike but he couldn't remember all of the details and suggested I call Bartolini. So I did. They researched and couldn't dig up info on the elusive wtmb and called me back to tell me so. I was bumbed. I had also emailed Bartolini the same questions. Low and behold a couple of days later Clyde emailed me saying he did more digging but couldn't locate more info. The wtmb was not really something in the official catalog. It was a special preamp and they didn't keep files after Mike abandoned the need for them. I replied with gratitude but expressed my dismay for not getting more info. Two days later Clyde emailed and asked me for a pic of my control cavity with the wtmb in it so I sent a pic. And then he replied thanking me and gave me a whole bunch more info. The pic triggered his memory and he took the time to send me all he could remember about a preamp that was even more rare than the TCT. I asked if he had any more wtmb or original TCT preamps around and he didn't but told me to contact proaudioland.com because he thought they had a small stash of them. Considering all of this stuff is like ancient history I really appreciated the time the folks at Bartolini took to discuss details with me on something that wasn't going to net them any financial gain.

Just got brought back to this thread via a notification. Alot has changed since these posts haha. The biggest thing is that the Burbank era pre-Gibson Tobias TCT circuit has returned under part #: HRTCT-5.4AP. Clyde really did an excellent job restructuring the company as president. When I came on as a Bartolini artist, him and Doug were extremely instrumental in humoring my TCT jones and were gracious enough to bring it back. So all you Tobias/TCT folks need not be sad anymore.

Not completely sure about the Growler but the Killer B had a couple years in Burbank with Mike and the guys before heading to Nashville, which I still consider "Pre-Gibson" just because the only thing Gibson had to do with it was throwing money at Mike while he and his team built them.. I may be wrong but I thought the Growler came around the same time at the killer B?

Rough guess might be '94 to '95. Bass was definitely built in Nashville.

FWIW, my Nashville Classic 6, AFTER REFINISH by Pat Wilkins, is every bit as nice as my Signature 5 from the Hollywood shop. To me, the bones of the Nashville instruments were good; but, they mainly suffered in the finish realm of things. Which was a problem at the time for their price point as new instruments; but, with the scarcity of the LA builds and being used instruments creates some opportunities for players. IMO/E.

Thank you. Yes it was gigged hard by my friend who currently owns it. Pickups &/or preamp issues = doesn't get played in the studio. I'm happy to give it a new lease on life.

This problem might have been asked before , but if you dont mind, could any body share a picture of the key/wrench to adjust the Tobias Classic/ Basic truss rods....
I just bought one and need the info
Its hidden deep in the body side..I cant determine what to use..
