can't find any number on the PCB. but it looks different than in the pic.

if im not mistaken, the vintage japan made tune basses are totally different than the newer korean made ones. the company was sold, and some things changed. no ?

i'll post a daylight pic of the PCB tomorrow.

my tune is from the late 80s or early 90s. the company was sold then. so i guess, calling the company would be a waste of money. or do you think, they got all the early blueprints and stuff ? then i should really give it a try.

i thought i'd put the video of me jamming with my synchron up on youtube, since there is not much tune material there...

hey folks.

just read something about BASS COLLECTION basses... maybe somebody can confirm that ?

seems like the original TUNE company from japan split, and tune basses were bade in korea under the name of "bass collection", which then was renamed to TUNE also. so that's why there are 2 companies called tune nowadays, tune in japan and tune in korea.
is that true ?

sounds possible to me, since the bass collection basses look exactly like the bass maniac...

I upgraded the knobs from some chrome ones. The chrome just looked wrong with the other gold/brass hardware.

Alright, this is a bit confusing and I am still piecing the puzzles together, but this is what I have so far.

The Bass Collection basses (which are copies of the Bass Maniac series of basses) were made by SGC Nanyo, itself based in Japan and have developed quite a following for well built instruments. From what I have read, the company behind SGC Nanyo became known as Godlyke (or something) and produced the Deity bass, which isn't based off of any Tune design. The Bass Collection line itself got sold to SX; this is where they first started before making the Fender copies we know today.

As far as the Korean Tunes go, I have no idea where that came from (aside from Korea, of course). Production of those basses I think stopped a while back, and while they are good basses for the money the Japanese models are far better, which is to be expected considering the Korean ones were factory built and the Japanese ones were built by hand (It'd be like comparing a Lakland Skyline model vs a USA Lakland). That said some do share electronics, but my knowledge is only limited to the TWB and TWX models (and similar). I know nothing about what is inside the Bass Maniac or ZI series to say anything about those (though some of the high end Bass Maniacs can be made with TWB internals).

Different topic; I am actually thinking of getting a Japanese Tune and I was wondering how hard it would be to ship one to the US. Has anyone had any experience from buying online from a Japanese store? Here are the basses I am looking at:

Obviously it's a TW of some kind (can't tell if it's a TWB or TWX) but I can't tell if it is a custom Korean bass or what. Really confusing!

those inlays look crazy !!!
don't know if it's custom made, or if it was just an inlay artist who had to practice his skills and chose a tune bass for that. if you see a tattooed pig, that doesn't mean somebody wants his pigs tattooed, it just means that a tattoo artist practiced on them. haha

Figured as much. I gathered from the description anyway that the bass was implied to be Korean.

Also, I love that blue pearloid TWB. Unfortunately it's a bit out of my price range right now but I am saving up for a Japanese BE-4.

Speaking of which; what is it like playing a 36" scale instrument?

Hi guys!

I've Ben looking at the many posts here and learned a lot about Tune. Would def. love to get a Japan tune...

However my question: should I really spend €400 on a Korean Bass Maniac 5 string? Invalid Link Removed

How might it compare to a Squier Vintage Mod 5 string which retails at about same price??

Finally does anybody have any sound clips? I'd be eternally grateful ! ;)

I got my used MIK TB Maniac PJ5 at GC for $250. Swamp ash body, light as a feather, clear, authoritative sound, yet sweet, no harshness. I could easily live with it as my only bass.

At the same time, I had a Squier Affinity 5. A competent bass, to be sure, but not in the Tune's league in either wood or fit and finish. And there is no doubt of the broad utility of a PJ in meeting any sonic demand.

In truth, if you're not a hobby bass collector, you'd get more value out of it as an only bass than as a second bass because it covers so much ground there would be much overlap.

I'm just surprised to see so much price differences -new (from the Korean site) its around the 1000$ mark but many retailers are offering for muuuch less, and private sellers also seem to vary a lot in asking price.


Anyway, if anything, what would you compare it too, build and sonic wise?
I know it's very different, but how might it stand up to a Stingray, or for that matter a MIA Fender jazz?

Does anyone have experiences from buying overseas? There are 2 Tunes I am interested in; one being a BE-4FM sold by TC-Gakki who claim they ship overseas, and a black TWB sold by POPS-K, though there's nothing that says they do or do not ship overseas.

I read enough horror stories about Ikebe, and Ishibashi has some instruments that look nice but are 1) out of my price range and 2) not 4 strings.

Lorenzo, while I do not own a TBJ or NTB, everything I have read says that they are on par with say, a Spector. Build wise they are quite good; sure they aren't at the level of Japanese Tunes, but I'd say they are well built. Neck is solid, holds its intonation well, and does the job well.
