Here's a great shot of tonight's Baja Snake outdoor performance at Lawn Gnome Publishing featuring the live painting of Tony Deschiney! This was undoubtedly one of the best gigs I've ever done. Great crowd, great vibe, cool hang!

The Sonus Custom 5 continues to serve me remarkably well. As you can see in this shot, I'm running it though a JC-120 for these duo shows, and it sounds killer! Chorus = engaged.

Thanks for sharing -and thats to everyone who does .Thats cool when people share photos of their axes especially when they are gigging .It makes you feel like the thread is actually live and well,sometimes it seems kinda inactive .A picture is worth a thousand words .Its nice to travel thru the net and see whats happening out there .I do not play in a band so it is exciting to see other peoples gigging adventures .It must be exciting playing live .I have not played a live gig since 1985 and really miss doing so .No one in my family likes heavy music .It is like this monster that I can only bring out and play with when no one is around otherwise headphones it is .
Iam getting my hardshell case tomorrow.I have no idea what they are like because I have never seen a pic of one .Will post a pic of one soon .Most auctions and stores always advertise the Zon basses for sale with gig bags .Evidently they are a very good case. A good bass deserves a good case.

^ thanks amigo! Yeah, gigging is one of those things. I didn't gig -- out of frustration -- between the ages of 21 and 30. Realized finally that it was something I *needed* to do, whether or not my music ended up being commercially successful.
Sorry to hear that nobody else in your haus digs the heavy stuff! Maybe you can find one other guy in town with similar tastes and form a duo? It's all the rage in the doom community -- cf. Dark Castle, Black Cobra, etc
Can't wait to see a photo of the case!

Yes, alder body, made in 2006 one of the early ones. To be honest it plays and sounds much better than a 2012 TJ6 I had not long ago.

I've played AJ Brown's old TJ5s, and loved them.
Actually I think I've held that one! Mine was made around the same time in 2006.
Interesting that you find it so different than the recent one.

Here are a couple pics of what a Zon Hardshell case looks like .They are a very well built case and look classy too.
I also wanted to share a picture of a custom bass that I was stupid to let go of but did .This was built by an engineering student Named Jay Volden who was attending NDSU back in the early nineties.He was from Henning Minnesota.His uncle who knew a thing or two about wood directed him to use Red Elm as a body wood because it was "stringy" say like oak .If you have ever split oak for firewood sometimes after you hit it ,you have to pull it apart cause the fibers hold together.Iam assuming thats what he meant .The bass was not lite .I didnt mind ,I like the tone of a heavy body .Thats why Stingray5 s have such massive tone is all that mass.Billy sheehan said he has taken a vicegrip and attached it to his headstock while recording for extra mass.I prefer badass bridges on four strings -because they are great but also afford you alot of mass.Anyway the neck was from Warmoth and had tons of small birdseye curly Q's on it .The nut and bridge were solid brass.EMG pickups .The finish was a super dark emerald Green that was so dark it looked black .You could only see it was green in direct sunlight or other light.
He wanted 1000.$ for it but was in need of cash so he sold it to me for 500. but he said for that price he would need to take the compression chip out of it -? and took it into his backroom and brought it back five minutes later .
He said that he loved bringing it to live shows to let bassists check out his wares and that he especially loved the slap tone out of it and always boasted that it had better slap tone than A Stingray .Back in the early nineties alot of people were influenced by Flea and the Stingray slap tone .
I was jamming in the bassment of a friends home on an SVT with fridge.It was his roommates rig .His room mate came home and approached me in the basement .I thought he was upset that I was on his rig but he came over looked intently at the bass and said holys*&% man thats what a bass should sound like .It was a cool axe.I traded it for a Geddy Lee jazz bass at Guitar Center .I never could sound like Geddy Lee even with his bass .Probably because the amp I was using at the time was too clean and did not provide the tube grit.If you want a good metal tone use Red Elm .I was thinking of building a jazz bass with Red Elm for the body and A Modulus neck.That would be a killer bass.
I just got some new DR hi beams .I was reading on the back of the package that Marcus Miller stated they were a very easy playing string .That is a true statement .The set that is on my bass have been on there for two months with at least 50 hours of playing on them and they still have some life in them .DR hi beams are a string breakthrough .A technological advance in string tone ,playability and they last a long time .They are very brite and aggressive.Composite necks accentuate those characteristics.I was reading some reviews on musicians friend for them and some fellow said you may need to drop your pickup down with these strings or the signal may be too hot .This is true .The signal on my Sonus was way too hot and I had to turn the preamp setting on the bass as low as it would go .
I was going to try some Ernie Ball cobalt strings but one reviewer stated they were somewhat stiffer.That is an ingredient for pain .I was looking around for the Sadowsky steels that Vic said were a good bet but could not locate them ? where do you get those .I do not even know why Iam trying different strings these DR hi beams are a great choice .Check em out if you want a super brite ,easy playing ,long lasting string .

@Addison : that is a beautiful custom bass. Love that groovy shape! The Zon hard case looks nice also.

Yeah I realize it is the pheno wood but it just looked more like a traditional wood fretboard to me in that particular photo.Nice axe!

^ Thanks amigo! I'll post a better shot tomorrow. In other news, I had an incredible, mind-rearranging, inspiring in-person lesson with Todd Johnson this afternoon. On top of the amazing teaching, I got to play the the 32" headless TJ for a minute. That thing is *wunderbar* and made an instant 32" convert of me.
