Official Zon Club Part 4

Despite the missing string and total lack of proficiency on the instrument, performed live with the fretless 2001 Sonus tonight at Space 55. It was ambient music, so I pretty much just played two notes the whole time. This thing is a champ, and sounds great and all 80s'd out through my JC-120!

Got tons o' compliments on the sound afterward. Most of the audience didn't care that a string was missing.

I ran direct and had both pickups on. Would have preferred favoring the back pickup, but there was a bad ground somewhere and I couldn't shake the hum ( bad ground in the studio not the bass)

edit : I just listened to some of the Aries Rising tunes. Amazing playing! What bass are you using for those cuts?

I'm using my Fodera Emperor Standard for the Aries Rising CD. For Agents of Venus I used my Zon Sonus fretless 5 and my Modulus Genesis 5 fretted.

I like my 5s a hell of a hell of a lot, but between this and my lessons with the man himself, I get a powerful craving to add a 6th string and two more frets sometimes

Oh, one cool and amazing thing I noticed when the D string tuner failed on my Sonus 5 fretless : the neck relief *did not perceptibly change* despite the loss of ~45lbs of tension! Sounds insane / improbable, but I swear it's true. That is what I call a @#$%ing rock-solid stable neck.

Yeah I'm not surprised it survived the tuner failing. Zons are incredibly well built and the rigidity in their necks is one of the things I really enjoy about playing them.

OK, I'm again very hesitant to post this because my absolutely horrid technique and questionable harmonic sense are in full view, but I'll post it anyway so you cats can at least hear the timbre of the fretless Sonus through the JC-120 and be amused at the missing string.

Killer new track from James LaBrie's upcoming solo album, featuring Ray Riendeau on (Zon) bass. Such a great bassist for a great singer and songwriter. Ray's chops are insane, and yet he always manages to keep it simple and groovy when needed. He is always supporting the band and the song.

Here's the complete video of the Baja Snake performance at Space 55. I'm really struggling with the instrument, clearly, but being as it was my first performance on fretless, I guess that's OK. Good thing I only had to play D, A, and the occasional A# or C!
