I've been considering it since the one in my Fodera seems to have a great sound.

Although the Bartolini in my Zon is capable of lots of tonal palettes.

Just keep in mind the Pope preamp is only one of MANY components to the sound of that Fodera. I've had the Pope preamp in other basses, and while it is a great preamp, I'm not sure I'd swap it out for the stock Bart unless I was looking for a specific feature the Bart didn't offer.

In other news, something that's never happened to me, and indeed I've never heard of, occurred tonight : in the middle of rehearsal with Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra, the D string tuner [Gotoh] on my new-to-me 2001 fretless black Sonus (pictured above) catastrophically failed, such that turning the key no longer causes the string-holding shaft to rotate! Must have broken a gear or something. This happened as I was tuning to standard tuning! No crazy alternate-tuning ish. WHAAAT

This ever happen to any of you cats?

Addendum : since I gotta replace one tuner on this thing, I might replace more than one, and I'm thinking about installing one or more D-tuners. Does anyone know the maximum configuration of D-tuners that will fit on a standard 5-string Zon headstock?

My guess is two... one for the low B and one for the G string.

The Sonus headstock is actually shorter than the Legacy headstock so I don't think there would be enough room between the D and G tuners to allow for another one on the D string.

EDIT: If you look at the lefty ZON headstock in my avatar (it's a Sonus Elite so it has a Legacy headstock), you can see I requested the tuners to be reversed so I could have a D tuner on the low B and E strings.

The E string lever on the D-tuner just barely clears the B string tuner... since the tuners would be quite a bit closer together on a bolt-on Sonus headstock, it wouldn't work.

Actually, I think you could get maybe three.

Two if you're lucky, but not three. If you're using standard (not customized) Hipshot Xtenders and have a normal Sonus-length headstock, you can probably fit one on your lowest and another on your highest. Both the lever and the tuning head need room to flip and rotate respectively; the tuner heads can ram into each other, making it not detune to your set pitch. Here's a thread on the subject:

Ok... I was figuring you might have enough room on the "2 side" for one on the E string. I definitely already understood no way on the 3 side.

Crap, you're right... Always forget about that.

Just checked width on both my basses and the Elite headstock is about 0.18" wider as well... And I don't think I could mount a D tuner on both sides of that headstock.

Thanks for the help, guys! You are the best. I'm thinking on the G string, since I'd want to use it more for pedal-steel-type effects than suiting my lowest note to certain keys.


When the day finally comes that I can order a Zon to my specs, I'll mos def get the longer headstock -- thanks for the tip, Addison!

Despite the missing string and total lack of proficiency on the instrument, performed live with the fretless 2001 Sonus tonight at Space 55. It was ambient music, so I pretty much just played two notes the whole time. This thing is a champ, and sounds great and all 80s'd out through my JC-120!

Got tons o' compliments on the sound afterward. Most of the audience didn't care that a string was missing.
