Ok, so what bass evolution do you actually want?

I want someone to make a bass 1/2 solid body and 1/2 hollow body (with the center solid like an EB2) joined together with a pick up mounted on each half. Maybe this wont work with only 1/2 of the body to resonate but maybe it could. Put "F" holes on the hollow half.

At some point, the bass has to still be a playable bass.
There is that bass with the half fretted, half fretless that's an interesting evolution, but nobody bought it...
Headless basses are a thing to some, but heavily divisive....
P/j, p/mm, j/mm are all combos of other basses...
People hated gibson's robot tuning guitar...
So, what do you people actually want?

I want a bass that’s totally rad looking, yet comfortable and looks good. Solid, yet very lightweight. With singlecoilbucking pickups. Fanned fretted-fretless, built in effects modules but a single knob to control it all.

Back to reality. I do like the idea of a bass that’s fretted and fretless, but they are doing it wrong. It should be a six string. The fretless portion should be the B E A strings, frets 14-24. They way you get the precision notes and chords for most everything, while having the fretless effect on-tap at any time.

I want more 32” scale basses, and more unique pickup designs. Plenty of vintage and modern pickup designs that aren’t getting into production models in lieu of classic designs that have been done to death. Another thing I’d like to see is more basses based off guitar designs, such as a jaguar bass that has Jaguar pickups (but with 4 pole pieces), or an Epiphone Wilshire bass (basically a poor man’s Serek Midwesterner).

Played most of the evolutions in my lifetime so far... I'm back to 60's basses and tube amps or reproductions of them... because they sound better.

I want sensors built in that help me set-up and intonate the instrument. Maybe an app that takes the various readings and computes the tweaks needed for my preferred playing set-up. Maybe slowly adjust the saddle height until a light flashes that I have it exactly right. Or set my pickup height with the output of the instrument monitored to tell me what's happening magnetically and suggest the sweet spot.

I have to admit it'd be pretty cool if Fender made the 7th fret D on the G string "Dead Spot Optional". It hasn't stopped me from buying more so I guess that's their answer.
But the other answer is that you could evolve a bass into a keyboard and fire the bassist. Then who would be left to fire the drummer?

ok hear me out: i foresee a future bass (and guitar) with a programmable digital preamp. Similar to how Source Audio and Darkglass have stomp boxes you can plug into your computer and edit and tailor your settings, I see this happening directly on board, capable of syncing to a bluetooth connected footswitch. Imagine like, a bergantino B/amp in your bass’ control cavity. Infinite tonal possibility you can plug directly into a DI and get any tone imaginable without ever running through a pedal, preamp, head or cab.

ok here’s the kicker though: you can even put it in a sunburst p with a tort and flats.

From which company?

fender? I have two personally. Id like to see a mim 5 string p. I’d also like to see fretless 5 string jazz. It’s odd how fender can have so many versions of p and j basses over the years but they seem to never make the exact p or j I want.

dingwall. My main player is a Dingwall. Love that bass. I’d like to see the super p 5 done as a production model. Cost and wait time for a custom super p is insane

Mayones. A 5 string Cali mini

wingbass. Do a mass production model. The options for a custom really aren’t that insteresting imo.

Strandberg. Bring this style of body finish and pickgaurd and combine it with maple neck and put into production. All their production basses are natural finish. They look great but after 20 years of playing mainly Warwicks I’m a little burned out on the natural look.
