P-Bass Club (Part 2) Precision Decisions

Bought a cheapo Plywood Rouge P-ish bass at a yard sale for $15.
Came with a $99 Fender gig-bag, and a new (allparts?) P/J bridge, and all manuals/hang tags for a Jazz Bass.

I scraped the body, electronics....um...all but the neck and I'm building a new body, making a trem (I know...Iknow..), and using a Peavey J-bass pickup. Just one.
I'll post it up in the Luthier's corner.

Lemme say though, this neck is really nice. I'd never switch it to my Fender, but it's a big, wide neck with perfect string pull, and an amazingly strong truss rod.
I'm surprised, in all honesty.

Looks like a nioce bass, like the colors on it.

The angle makes it looked like the body is sorta streched, IMO.

These are old pictures, I should really take new ones. The body has a yellow tint because I put on a few crappy coats of finish on it.

All new parts and mainly MIJ:
Fender 1970s MIJ RI pickups, electronics, chrome knobs and olympic white poly finish alder body
Fender 1957 MIJ RI one piece maple neck: 42mm (1.65 inch) width at nut, 7.25" radius, vintage frets, tinted poly finish
Badass II black bridge
Fender vintage full size base tuners (donated by the Geddy)
Allparts black pickguard
black strap buttons
the binding was done with automotive decoration lines

The project started with the set of tuners taken out from the GL and because i missed the tone of a PJ bass i sold after i got the GL. At first i thought about getting a Steve Harris signature but instead i decided to build me a similar bass with the opposite combination of my GL, like a ying yang. She ended being such a nice instrument and i saved a lot because Fenders with this specs here are around US$1400 and the total cost for this sweetness was just US$881. And finally i am really proud of assembling and setting her by myself.

Herrlster: I like it because of the yellow finish, I wouldn't change it but that's me. Looks cool with the black body sides too.

Metalclaus: Did you pinstripe it or did someone else do it?
It's a nice touch, really adds to the overall appeal.

I've got my first bass (a Xmas gift in 1978), a 1967 Fender P Bass with a 1981 Badass II bridge. OK, when I was 17 (being a TOTAL idiot), I listened to our drummer who had a friend who ran an auto body shop and wanted me to repaint my bass a cool candy apple blue... so, being a 17 year old TOTAL idiot, I let him take my bass apart (back in 1981) and strip the original worn all to hell sunburst finish from my bass. Then, I got cold feet before it could be painted and told him to stop. Well, he had to put a sealant on it (a pine finish that is fugly), and put it back together. Since then, it hasn't been taken apart and it plays like a dream. I plan on getting it restored (with the appropriate aging done according to photos from the time I rec'd it), but until then.. here it is.

I personally wouldn't touch it. It's got a bit of a Leland Sklar look to it, like it's been round the world twice and played every type of music you could possibly imagine. Much more interesting than a boring paint job.

I am totally pumped. I didn't even know they made 5 string precision basses, when I found out, GAS took over in a massive way. Obsessed until I actually made the purchase. woohoo

It's be cool if the back was black and the front white, using the stripe as a mid-way.

Tried it and what I got was a big gap around the neck heal on the fretless so I decided to not. good call tho. it is fun having multiple p’s and being able to switch around the parts from time to time.
